Got the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine
tsupersonic and 15 others reacted to Barney T. for a topic
Hi All, Just a PSA, As a front line health care worker, I received the 1st of two COVID vaccines last Wednesday. I wanted to get it due to my age and exposure to COVID-19 patients on a daily basis. I must say that despite a sore arm and one day of some malaise, I feel fine. Going back for #2 dose during the first week of January. I am extremely grateful for the many scientists, researchers, and volunteers who did the research on this vaccine. I am blessed to be one of the first to get it and encourage others to do the same. Yes, there were two (so far) who had reactions, but this is expected in a huge population getting the vaccine. There will be a few who don't tolerate it. Please consider getting whatever vaccine is offered to you. COVID-19 is no joke and the residual effects are horrid. Best always to all of my fellow Neowinians this holiday season!16 points -

This is so wrong, it's a headache to go through... It might not kill you. You might just have to live with brain, lung and heart damage for the rest of your life. Coolio, dodged a bullet there(!) I laugh at how wearing a mask is being controlled. Good point. It's like a fire, it's only bad for you if you're flammable... While there is no avoiding the fact that in the US they are extorting people, you just need to look at reasonable health industries in other countries to realise that this vaccine is for the good of the population, not a money-grabbing scheme. You can blame the US industry for high prices, but not for offering a life-saving drug. If you have a chance, get vaccinated. There's just no two ways about it.6 points -

Potentially, but the big problem isn't the people with mild cases that make a full recovery with ease, or even asymptomatic cases - the problem is that those people can and are still spreading it and infecting people who are vulnerable to it. I'll get the vaccine when it's available to me, not because I'm so concerned with protecting myself, but because I want to help protect others.5 points -

Yeah right. Work with your partners first Microsoft to make sure every single Windows laptop and PC has a fingerprint reader and/or Windows Hello IR cam. High-end gaming laptops omit both. Many consumer laptops omit both. They made TPM mandatory a few years ago. Now make fingerprint reader or IR cam mandatory, if not both.5 points -

Those stats sound wrong, I don't know anyone using windows hello, most consumers don't have a password on their computer unless windows forced them to. Any IT, person knows how redundant a password is on a Windows device anyways... Anyone aside from your child or grandma can figure out how to take over Windows given a few minutes. Lol Two step is a much better defense for online accounts. If MS only uses MSAUTH hackers will just be searching to exploit it. Most OTP can be hijaked, the accounts are stored in a copiable format if the device is rooted.3 points -

TReKiE and 2 others reacted to ThaCrip for a topic
For the common person... simply use a password manager (I suggest using 20+ characters in length where possible and use at least one upper case/lower case letter, a number and a symbol as this forces someone trying to crack your password to try all possible combinations that way pretty much). this way all you have to do is remember a decent password, called the master password, and once you enter that, the password manager remembers all of your usernames/passwords to your accounts online that are very secure as no one will guess that and even if one account became compromised, through say a hacker hacking a website, the rest of your accounts will still be secure since your using a different password on every single account you use. NOTE: to state the obvious... make damn sure to backup your password managers database file because if your computer crashes and you lose that file, getting access to your accounts online is going to be a big problem. so make at least one or two backup copies as this way if your computer crashes, it will be nice and easy to restore that database file to another computer. I suggest Diceware (which is guaranteed secure), or at least use a decent password paired with a padding scheme. I suspect most will opt for the decent password with a padding scheme, since it's easier to remember. so instead of say 'MyDecentPassword' one can do something like '-----MyDecent?Password..........'. this takes a 16 character password and makes it into 32 characters in length. because as a general rule when it comes to passwords, the longer the better. you could even use whatever letters you want instead... "aaaaaMyDecentaPasswordaaaaaaaaaa" etc. but since people are lazy, they usually avoid setting up the password manager but it's well worth it (since initial setup takes a while but after that it's easy) since it's a secure way to help ensure your doing your part so no one will hack into your account and even if some site is hacked, the damage will be limited to just that one account. but many have to learn the hard way where they use the same crappy password on multiple sites and when one gets hacked, the hacker and potentially take over the rest of your accounts and wreaks havok on ones online life and at that point it's usually too late. you don't want someone getting a hold of your email which is often tied to many other of your accounts as they could potentially use that to reset password for other accounts you have. as they say those hacker types usually go after the low-hanging-fruit. so you want to be above that standard at the very least otherwise your asking for trouble. side note... a YubiKey is nice for further securing ones Google account. with that, even if someone were to get a hold of your username/password, they still can't log into your account. NOTE: those with a computer with a USB port I suggest just the two cheapest keys. you need two of these because one you use for general use and another for a backup in case you lose your primary key you can still sign into your Google account and remove the lost/stolen key, then just simply buy another and register that to the account and you now have two keys again. p.s. Diceware basically generates a passphrase using words from... https://www.eff.org/files/2016/07/18/eff_large_wordlist.txt ; you basically take five dice and with each roll of those five dice (reading from left to right or right to left as they fall on the table in front of you) it gives you a 5-digit number which you then convert to a word on that txt file I linked to. it's suggested to use a minimum of six words which is about equivalent to a 12 character random password using all 94 keys on a standard keyboard short of the space bar. a 10 word Diceware passphrase is similar in security to a 20 character randomly generated password using all 94 keys on the keyboard. basically a 10 character passphrase with Diceware won't be cracked for the foreseeable future since it's 129.2bits of entropy. a six word Diceware passphrase is 77.5bits of entropy. with that said... I suggest adding a little padding in there to to further harden it. on a side note... one can use dice to generate random passwords of any length you want (I won't get into this for now) but unless one is really paranoid and don't trust the password managers password generation, it's likely overkill. so just use the password managers password generation instead since it's much easier and takes quite a bit less time since, in short, one would have to roll three dice at least twenty times in order to generate a 20 character password using all keys on a standard keyboard short of the space bar. but for those interested in this see the "How do I use dice to create random character strings?" section over at this link... https://theworld.com/~reinhold/dicewarefaq.html ; for example here is one 20 character password I rolled using real dice... ^r3_ATt[C+ _^F864`z)I ; I try to make it so that at least one lower case letter, upper case letter, a number and a symbol is included which usually seems to do that when rolling 20+ characters from what I have noticed even though there might be times it does not since this is random after all. either way, that will still be much more secure than some so-so password many are using.3 points -

I don't understand this article... Passwords will still be the overwhelming authentication method at the end of 2021 but good luck Microsoft! Personally, I use strong passwords with the Bitwarden password manager and 2FA with Authy where can. I was talking with Usama about this, but it doesn't help that Windows Hello hardware for PCs is still quite expensive. I bought my Logitech Brio in January this year for €149 and the average price shot up to almost double that in March thanks to the pandemic and people working from home. There's also very little choice of (proper) cameras that work with Windows Hello, which enables the price to stay high. See price trend a bit further down the page https://tweakers.net/pricewatc...itech-brio-4k-ultra-hd.html and that is for a camera that first appeared in Feb 2017, almost 4 years ago!2 points -

All pc devices should have a fingerprint scanner or secure face detection. This tech is cheap nowadays and allows fast and secure logins. Password managers are a mess when you switch devices/location frequently. Bull, I have a desktop and have no need for a fingerprint scanner. I had a fingerprint scanner years ago just for a laugh, it was total rubbish, sure the technology was not great then, but all it did was put the password in automatically anyway, so still a password. I have a webcam, but it is years old and works ok as a webcam, but i doubt it would work well for face detection , also not all websites will work with these devices. My computer boots directly into windows, no log in1 point -

On the base consoles though it's not just buggy it can also crash persistently, not to mention the frame rate that often dips under 20. It didn't pass cert on ps4 and Sony gave them a wavier on condition that the day one patch would fix it up enough. Dont worry, it crashes plenty on PS5/XSX, it's just that people seem to be willing to excuse the games faults for whatever reason. It's a buggy mess and yes I believe the Jan/Feb patches will be game changers, literally.1 point -

No one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to use Twitter. The only thing that's missing from this opinion is 230 protections. If Twitter/Facebook/Google are going to become publishers... then remove the protections for being a platform. Once that's done... then let the lawsuits land where they land. They have too much power to be allowed to arbitrarily decide what is "true" - and they have shown they have no problem abusing that power. I see you don't know what 230 does.1 point -
