Disable the insert key in Windows permanently

This thing drives me nuts when I am editing a post or using our CMS on Neowin. I found the solution here https://superuser.com/questions/31794/windows-insert-key-anti-functionality-accidentally-triggers-how-to-stop-it-perm for clarity, this for when the cursor starts replacing every character you have your cursor on rather than putting it in front of a character. Go to Start → Run → regedit Go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout Right-click on the right half of the screen and choose New → Binary Value Name the new value Scancode Map Enter 000000000000000002000000000052E000000000 Close regedit Reboot. Optional: you can take the Insert key off of your keyboard when done. Or do as I did and save the following as disable_insert_key.reg and merge (as an Administrator) into registry. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout] "Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,52,e0,00,00,00,00 Reboot + profit.2 points -

Which SSD for my laptop (Lenovo L530)? & how to move everything to SSD?
Mindovermaster reacted to Good Bot, Bad Bot for a topic
Ummmm Where did you give your reasoning why you are sticking with Windows 7? Sorry, it's just stupid to invest money in a machine that won't be getting security updates anymore. The reason your laptop is starting slow is because either the HDD is failing and/or your Windows install has collected a lot of crud over the years. If you are set against moving to Windows 10 for some reason I would run CrystalDiskInfo https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/ to see what state the HDD is in. All good? Backup your data and do a clean install of Windows 7. How does the laptop boot now? Good? Preceded to install the programs you need and restore your data. Not so good? Clone your Windows install to a SSD (than install your needed programs and data). Please don't clone an old Windows install to the SSD. You want to clone a fresh install if can't to a clean install on the SSD.1 point -

Not optimal, but not impossible, most games are playable on low settings at the very least. A metric I often use to equate performance, the lower end Intel HD (630) performs like an upper end Video Card from 10 years ago, and as you move up to Iris through XE, they range around the AMD built in Vega graphics on the 3000 and 4000 series up to the Geforce MX150 to MX360 mobile GPUs. So not horrible, especially with a lot of good 5 -10year old AAA games.1 point -

more governments should follow this suit. breaking up bigger companies is great for both small businesses and in politics(bigger companies tend the lobby politicians towards their interests over the general tax-payers). but it's hard for a country's economy to compete internationally if there are big companies in the international space competing against home-grown small companies. unless all big countries to stop monopoly, it's going to be hard to fix the problem.1 point -

Which SSD for my laptop (Lenovo L530)? & how to move everything to SSD?
Nogib reacted to ThaCrip for a topic
Personally... I would try the free upgrade to Windows 10 first (WIndows 7 is no longer supported as of Jan 2020), once you confirm it's activated, you could then remove the 500GB HDD and put your SSD into the laptop, then clean install Windows 10 to your new SSD. then at this point, if you don't mind spending a little bit of $, could get one of those cheap USB laptop 2.5" HDD readers then connect the HDD via USB to your laptop and transfer in your important files to it and then wipe the drive and use that 500GB HDD for external storage backup. it's not worth moving the install as is to your SSD as it's best to do a clean install to remove the junk and ensure your system is in optimal running order. this is standard practice if you ask me, especially if it's been years and you got a bunch of random junk on your laptop as it sits. with that said, it might be possible to use Clonezilla (as mentioned already) to copy from HDD to SSD but people in general should still not be using Windows 7 at this point. p.s. if you don't mind trying a alternative to Windows, especially if your primarily using it as a basic internet machine and the like, I suggest giving Linux Mint a try.1 point -

Got the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine
Jumping Jacinta reacted to shockz for a topic
How's that? Especially when you see a MAGA hats roaming around stores with no mask... or storming their capital buildings over covid mandates, all while not social distancing nor wearing masks. Or even worse, having massive thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings while still flying their Trump 2020 flags in their yard? How about that Sturgis rally? Which spread hundreds of thousands of cases, and one can easily go and find footage of MAGA rallies and parades within that event. Given current mortality rates (we'll go with 2.75 percent.. seeing ranges from 1.7 to 3.8 for entire US population, but much, much higher for older people, which these rallies typically produced for turn out) that rally has probably killed at least 7500 of those 300,000 infected individuals. Almost 10,000 dead. From just that stupid rally. Completely preventable. But Trump supporters gotta keep up that no mask narrative over anything else. There's plenty of blame to go around when Trump supporters lap up the no mask, nonsense conspiracy theories and flood transmission rates with community-based spread because of their irresponsibility. It's been scientifically proven that when both parties are wearing masks, the risk of a covid infected individual transmitting the virus to another mask wearer is in the single percentage points, close to 0 when 6 ft apart. When the infected party doesn't wear a mask, that jumps to 40% transmission rate. And before you go off and spout something silly about the protests, no, those were not super spreaders. Scientifically proven. Fact. Instead of linking to data that you'll ignore completely, pick your source from an easy google search. https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=were+protests+super+spreaders&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8. Ironically wearing masks to conceal their identities also stopped the spread. Who knew a piece of cloth could stop the virus, oh wait... everyone who doesn't tune into Trump's nonsense. I'll go out on a limb and say maybe the Nov 7th Biden celebrations caused an up tick, but even then, most had masks. Oh also: How about Trump stopping the federal dissemination of masks to the public, especially in inner cities where the low income/no income individuals couldn't get one. The only thing you've been right on. Covid would have come, regardless of who was in office, however that's where it ends... there was plenty that could have been prevented after it got here. If it weren't for states stepping up to the plate to pick up the Trump administrations slack, it'd have been an even worse disaster.... and still, those states are still bombarded by MAGAs protesting mandates/restrictions. State mandates are uneven state to state, and there is no consistency on a national level. High infection rate sates continue to flood other states during holiday travels and contribute to the spread. The federal government needs to step up. Hopefully with Biden and a full majority congress, we can create some sort of consistency. Get a clue.1 point -

Biden will send the kind of normal political information we expect from boring, competent, hard at work political administrations who have more important things to do. But... Trump actually is pro-USA unlike the godless leftists who are headed towards communism the further left they go. anyone who can't see this is really blind. ever notice how the left always wants more power/control over peoples lives? for the record... we all know the democrats cheated as there is simply no way Biden got more votes than Obama did and Trump beat Obama comfortably. Prove it. Both your election claims AND the more control over peoples lives, because I can think of four hot button issues the republicans love to run on that are the epitome of interfering with people's lives.... namely canceling private insurance for millions of Americans, abortion, banning gay marriage, discriminating against active military members if they are trans. And before you go off on some second amendment tangent, Dems don't want to take your guns... well, unless you've got an AR, but you shouldn't have those anyways, some of which were banned in the Bush Sr. years (a republican *gasp*). Oh, there's also public schools (you know those pesky things where the majority of our children go and lean) where they want to control book/content material, and generally are able to, because Texas, who is the largest consumer of educational materials, dictates various political ideologies be included in texts, and book publishers don't want to spend more money making two separate books, one for TX, the other for everyone else. Examples: Forcing publishers to include creationism in their texts, minimizing sections on evolution. Considering your posting history, something you're probably entirely for, but again, it's republican interference in daily lives. Another controversial topic is American History and obscuring race issues, minorities, the civil war in particular continues to be twisted and marginalized with every revision. Slavery was practically a footnote when it came to causes of the civil war. I looked at my nephews history book a few years ago and it's astounding how much is left out and how a much more rosy picture of past atrocities are either left out or reduced. Or what about something like the continuing attacks on unions and their attempts at dissolving them. There's a constant barrage from the right on "control of peoples lives". Stop kidding yourself. And even worse, don't even try to bring up mask mandates and social distancing, Republican governors are also pushing for those mandates. Too bad they aren't pushing for more common sense measure. I suspect you'll never reply, and everyone will see your post as nonsense fluff regurgitated from your favorite right wing blogger. I could go on and on with plenty of republican examples to counter your hypocrisy. Dems are just as bad in other ways, but your arguments are consistently pathetic.1 point -

I laugh at how wearing a mask is being controlled. Good point. It's like a fire, it's only bad for you if you're flammable... While there is no avoiding the fact that in the US they are extorting people, you just need to look at reasonable health industries in other countries to realise that this vaccine is for the good of the population, not a money-grabbing scheme. You can blame the US industry for high prices, but not for offering a life-saving drug. If you have a chance, get vaccinated. There's just no two ways about it.1 point -
Got the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine
conan_2000 reacted to ThaCrip for a topic
I am of the mindset if one is reasonably healthy, and not too old, their body almost certainly will fight it off naturally without much issue. so why put something foreign into ones body (it's simply a matter of trust and I won't take the risk with the vaccine when the virus it's supposed to protect against only has a very small chance to kill the common person). I won't be surprised if there's a greater risk from the vaccine than from the virus itself for the common person. there is A LOT of non-stop fearmongering for this virus from the corrupt leftist media when in reality ones chances of dying from it if they are not old and reasonably healthy is extremely low (even if you are on the old side, it's not a death sentence as the odds are still good for you, just not as good as someone a bit younger) but they will never tell people this as they want to use fear from this virus to control people with masks non-stop etc. but a lot of us see through their BS and are not playing their games. ever notice how it's always the left trying to control people locking down the country when shutting down the economy is far worse for most people than the overrated virus itself. sure, ill admit the virus is bad but only if you happen to be one of a very limited amount of people who react badly to it. the percentages are greatly in the common persons favor to not worry. if there was like say something in the ball park of a 20% death rate, it might be a different story then as taking a chance on the vaccine etc might be worth it. but as is, the virus is massively overblown. it's simply a matter of trust and in this regard I am not exactly putting a lot of trust in big pharma as they generally put $ ahead of ones health as you can see by the standards of drugs advertised on TV declining as you see a fair amount advertise stuff and not long after there are those lawyer commercials suing for damages etc. plus, a good percentage of the stuff they advertise on TV, the side effects are worse than the problem it's trying to fix etc. this just further proves my point that big pharma puts $ ahead of a genuine concern for peoples health. basically they can be good at saving ones life in a emergency, but for the more casual thing I would not be too trusting of them as I am of the mindset the less prescription drugs one is on the better for ones overall health in the long term. but I realize some people ain't got much choice, but short of the high priority cases where it's really needed, the less the better. I suspect the typical leftist around here will probably try to claim I am a "conspiracy theorist" etc, but you got to admit at least some of way I say is not a stretch for me to claim it. p.s. no offense to the OP.1 point -
