  1. Happy Holidays!

Happy holidays, everyone! Whether that be a merry Christmas, a happy Hanukkah, a joyful Kwanzaa, or any other celebration you follow, I hope you all have a great time! It's been a trying year, to say the least. And while normally this time of the year would be a chance to cheer it out with family and friends, it's unfortunately not possible for all of us. Although as I was reminded the other day, we are fortunate enough that in this day and age we have the possibility not only to phone one another, but to have a video call with them. It's not the same as seeing people in person, but it is a small comfort that I can at least see my sister open her presents when we video call later today. Anyway, I started this post with no real direction other than one small message, and I don't want to ramble. Here's hoping that you and your loved ones are safe, happy and rested, and ready to deal with whatever 2021 has to throw at us.

  4. Just a question to you all. Who pays the checks for Google Project Zero employees? Let me just say that I am old enough to not believe anymore in human holiness. Project Zero is a good idea and should inspire players to behave well but the referee should never be remotely suspected of being biased. As it stands now it is like a referee entering on the field wearing the shirt of one team.

  5. In case you didn't see any news, MIcrosoft has been a bit busy fighting ransomware, malware, and high value target hacking. The interesting thing about Google Project spanking this bee's nest, everyone in the world is on high alert, along with US and EU security and military dot i and crossing Ts. If what this group at Google does leads to additional attacks, they could all end up in prison or whisked away to a secret 'interrogation' facility - let alone the ramification to Google itself and not just this team. They are stupid enough to 'think' they are doing good, based on an idiotic philosophy, but to be this STUPID to release exploit information at this time in US history is inviting problems they can't fathom. .

To me only the Apple Silicon and Game Pass count as innovations, in the sense that they will bring change to the industry. the Lenovo and the LG wing come off as gimmicks while the consoles are basically faster versions of what we had before.

  13. Investor sues Cyberpunk 2077 maker over false claims

I thought it was accepted that the state of the game on release was because of the investors? They - as well as a handful of the gaming community - were pressuring the developers to release the game when the developers were saying that they needed more time?

  16. Here are the five coolest tech innovations of 2020

"starring Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X|S. While each console has slightly different strengths and weaknesses, both brought very similar innovations, including being some of the first pieces of hardware to pack RDNA2-based GPUs" PS5, sure, but you might want to at least fact check the reasons you give. 1) The PS5's GPU does NOT have full RDNA2 hardware. See AMD. See Microsoft. The Xbox Series S/X developer tools didn't turn on RDNA2 until a couple of months ago, where Sony's development toolkit was fully optimized for the RDNA1 + Ray Tracing added to the shader pipeline. It is not RDNA2. Microsoft, just like AMD, doesn't even have a fully optimized driver path or development framework for the Xbox series graphics. Sony does, you know why? Sony's hardware is only RDNA1 + their ray tracing implementation. This is why, that PS5, being 25% slower than the Xbox series X, with the current development tools, is about the same speed as the Xbox series X in some games, as they are not optimized for RDNA2 or even using those technologies. The Microsoft and AMD GPU drivers are still not even optimized for RDNA2. The AMD 6xxx GPUs will get faster as the drivers are optimized, and developers actually implement the newer technologies without a semi emulation layer that is optimized for Nvidia RTX hardware. (Now NVidia may keep the lead, as their hardware as specific ML processing, where AMD is doing the ML/Ai work in the existing shader pipeline.) Sony opted for faster uptick of development for current generation gaming, as things from the existing PC and console generations, translate easily to the PS5 RDNA, but is significantly limited in features & technologies that come from RDNA2 hardware. Sony cannot have RDNA2 hardware, as Microsoft helped AMD develop it, and Sony's silicon was finalized long before the RDNA2 silicon and features were implemented. 2) 3D Audio - The Xbox Series has MORE 3D audio technologies than the PS5, with the new 3D spatial hardware and engine, and it also outputs and translates to non-proprietary technologies like DTS and Dolby Atmos - specifically things the PS5 does not do because it is using a Sony only audio output format, that is effectively worthless right now. The tempest engine is interesting, but offers NOTHING that is not in the Xbox - as it does full 360 degree output, supporting up to like 64-128 speaker locations. 3D space is 3D space, there is no additional direction that the tempest is offering. Let me be clear here, as binaural in ear 3D audio is NOT NEW, and is fully supported on the Xbox Series. Except, the Xbox can output and reproduce it on SPEAKERS - something the PS5 CANNOT DO, as the 3D audio does not support speakers the PS5. Users expecting a speaker based 3D audio experience, will not currently get it with the PS5. The PS5's 3D audio is currently only Headphone only and limited to Sony's implementation, where the Xbox series supports DTS, Atmos, speakers and headphones, and can map to the user's ear shape, something that may be coming to the PS5 for headphone. ------ The PS5 is a great console, and has some good strengths, but it has no feature that is above the Xbox Series or PC technologies, and it also is not as full featured or as fast. Picking features that some bad tech reviews promoted as being PS5 'only' and saying these are the reason to buy a PS5 is just not accurate. Instead, talk about the dual shock (as you have) VR experiences, the UI and in game UI features that are unique, etc. (It is ok to prefer the PS5, but don't give people bad information to justify why.)

While all five entries are well deserved, only one - the Surface Duo - was both a monumental disappointment, a flop and a stupid idea to begin with. I guess that's why it's number one on the list. I sincerely hope that the person who pushed for Android on the Duo will be quietly let go - even if it is Nadella himself.

I am against suing for BS like this. the games bugs will be worked out eventually. it's not like they just released the game super buggy and then you never hear from them again as they are clearly working to get the game up to spec even though it might take em a few months or so before the game starts to get up to standard. but from what I heard it seems to be mainly the consoles where it's most flawed. but them investing in a game is a risk and they assume this risk otherwise simply don't put the money forward in the first place etc. but now they looking to extract $ by suing. they are just greedy etc.

  26. Happy Holidays!

(A small followup from the above. This is why it helps to have an idea of what you want to say before you write the message! ) I mentioned that it has been a trying year, and at this time it can really hit home. I saw a post on Reddit that reminded me of this, and I wanted to extend a similar offer. I try to be around here as much as possible, and today and the holiday period is no different. If you want to talk to someone, feel free to send me a PM. I'll also be available on the Neowin IRC channel and the Neowin Discord chat if you want a private, more instant conversation. We can talk about whatever you want, or you can just write to say hi! Sometimes you just want to talk to someone that you don't see in your day-to-day. I'd be happy to be that person if you like. Of course, this offer is always available not just during this holiday. But I figured it was just worth reminding you.

  27. IMHO, Android is quite safe unless you are rooted. The main problem is when the end-user installs executables that they should not install. So, the main problem is caused by layer-8 (the user), then companies like Apple tries to restrict the users and their applications but it is a fool errand. That's like saying, "Your device is safe as long as you don't turn it on!" Among the million problems with Android is that rooting an instance is too easy -- that's literally the basis for most security flaws/faults, anyway, including this one ("rooting" == "elevation of privilege flaw"). There are many kinds of vulnerabilities but the are summarized in: * Remote code execution * Presentials, where the hackers need direct access to the device or the user needs to install some malicious file. If the users decide to root its device then he must know what he is doing. Instead, if the user decides not to root, then he is still could be victims of phishing/malware. So, root (if it is only done by the user) is not a vulnerability but a feature. To root a device lowe the vulnerability but the vector attack is the same with or without root. As I said, security is not built upon layers, “Security is a chain; it’s only as secure as the weakest link.” Rooting a device is just a part of the chain but not the weakest. For example, an android user could root his device and be free of malware, while another user (using an un-root device) could be plagued with malware, or his information could be leaked because he decided to install rogue applications. https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2019/10/24/new-iphone-threat-these-17-malicious-apps-may-be-on-your-devicedelete-them-now/

  28. Precisely. I'm surprised so many western media outlets are happy to regurgitate the nonsense the CCP comes out with to explain away their actions. Jack Ma got a bit too big for his boots and the CCP didn't like it so they shut him down (or at least took him down a peg or two) largely to make sure nobody else got any ideas, and to make it clear who's boss. That's it. None of this "monopolies won't be tolerated" nonsense. Please, western "journalists", stop reposting CCP press releases as "news" and actually do a bit of journalism and find out the real story. And you can start doing that with western news stories too while you're at it.

  32. Nothing about your comment is really correct... Google isn't able to force Microsoft to do anything. LOL Google does find and disclose Android vulnerabilities while offering fixes on a monthly basis for any Android OEM to use. They don't disclose android vulnerability until they fix them. Here, they do this and exposing millions of users for potential risk. Especially when companies are ready to comply with the fix, here in this case, MS clearly stated that they found more issues with the vulnerability and will need more time to fix, still google made the vulnerability public. That is not correct...LOL. Google DISCLOSES vulnerabilities that have not been FIXED in 90 days and the same rules apply to Android. All kinds of vulnerabilities are not fixed by Android vendors that Google has disclosed. The reason for not being able to fix said vulnerability is not relevant. The public needs to be INFORMED of vulnerabilities in a timely matter because one has to assume the "bad guys" are also aware of the vulnerability and are actively exploiting it (which is happening in this case as stated in the article). Google follows a standard disclosure policy accepted by the overwhelming majority of cybersecurity experts.

  40. Depends on how the patching system works. The files in this game are huge, like, 11GB+ archives, and on PC it basically downloads a differential patch and applies it, that means, you need about 20GB of free space so that a temporary file can be created which will then replace the old file... Maybe on console instead of doing that they just download the archive again from scratch. Slower, but uses far less memory and hard drive to update

  41. Non-brand laptop batteries? Ok or don't bother?

It's hard to tell, but quality battery cells (i.e. made by Samsung, LG etc) aren't cheap, thus genuine packs aren't cheap. Packs sold under 'off-brand' or unknown names tend to either be made from cheap cells which probably won't last long, or genuine cells that failed quality tests for some reason. They also often outright lie about the capacity. I bought an off-brand battery for my power drill a few months back. Quick test showed that it was less than a half of the advertised capacity, and wasn't able to operate under heavy load (important for a drill). Luckily Amazon gave me my money back no questions asked. Oddly the sellers listing disappeared the same day! Basically you pays your money and takes your chance, but if you need the laptop to run for extended periods away from an outlet, then I wouldn't bother.

  43. more governments should follow this suit. breaking up bigger companies is great for both small businesses and in politics(bigger companies tend the lobby politicians towards their interests over the general tax-payers). but it's hard for a country's economy to compete internationally if there are big companies in the international space competing against home-grown small companies. unless all big countries to stop monopoly, it's going to be hard to fix the problem.

  45. No. Reality is... Trump, bored because he can't do the job he conned his way into, lies on Twitter a hundred times a day (inciting violence, willful ignorance, and sedition) just to serve his malignant narcissist personality disorder. Biden will send the kind of normal political information we expect from boring, competent, hard at work political administrations who have more important things to do. But... Trump actually is pro-USA unlike the godless leftists who are headed towards communism the further left they go. anyone who can't see this is really blind. ever notice how the left always wants more power/control over peoples lives? for the record... we all know the democrats cheated as there is simply no way Biden got more votes than Obama did and Trump beat Obama comfortably.
