  1. Here are the five coolest tech innovations of 2020

To me only the Apple Silicon and Game Pass count as innovations, in the sense that they will bring change to the industry. the Lenovo and the LG wing come off as gimmicks while the consoles are basically faster versions of what we had before.

  8. PC Build Guide: Ultra-budget PC for around $375

Wait, do you realize you are recommending a CPU that is significantly slower? On single core/thread it is 25% slower, and in multi-threading (all cores) it is over 25% slower. This will affect EVERYTHING from gaming to productivity. The GPU speed difference is tiny, and in non-gaming, the Intel GPU is faster for video encoding/decoding, etc. Intel or not, don't recommend something slow. A good performance reference site is PassMark - CPUBenchmark and VideoCardBenchmark - the CPU Single Thread Rating results are representative of gaming and engineering level performance, and the Average CPU Mark shows all core and maximum core utilization for high thread count productivity software like Blender.

I’ll believe the UI refresh when I see it. Like before, this will be lipstick on a pig. The top-level UI elements will be updated, but once we’ll start digging in the UI the Windows 95 and Vista bits will still be there.

The SRM instead CRM and the 7200 sold as 5200 RPM fiascos You were close Broney but still not accurate, Western Digital was selling what people thought were CMR drives but were actually SMR drives, SMR being terrible unless you knew what you were getting and had a FS to deal with it. They didnt clearly label the change or the fact that basically SMR was poor for a lot of drive use. You were more accurate than Trump though because you were at least close to the truth unlike all the "stolen election" BS.

Regarding #5 Zoom...I'm still going to use it for my clients (tech o non-tech). For one simple reason.. It's real easy to use!! GUI is simple! Both for the presentor and the participants. Nor Teams nor Google are that straight forward gui for non-tech participants. My market is mainly non-tech customers, I'm not going to hassle with software and cause the client lose focus if what I really care is for he/she to listen to what I say and buy my services.

  14. Here are the five coolest tech innovations of 2020

"starring Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X|S. While each console has slightly different strengths and weaknesses, both brought very similar innovations, including being some of the first pieces of hardware to pack RDNA2-based GPUs" PS5, sure, but you might want to at least fact check the reasons you give. 1) The PS5's GPU does NOT have full RDNA2 hardware. See AMD. See Microsoft. The Xbox Series S/X developer tools didn't turn on RDNA2 until a couple of months ago, where Sony's development toolkit was fully optimized for the RDNA1 + Ray Tracing added to the shader pipeline. It is not RDNA2. Microsoft, just like AMD, doesn't even have a fully optimized driver path or development framework for the Xbox series graphics. Sony does, you know why? Sony's hardware is only RDNA1 + their ray tracing implementation. This is why, that PS5, being 25% slower than the Xbox series X, with the current development tools, is about the same speed as the Xbox series X in some games, as they are not optimized for RDNA2 or even using those technologies. The Microsoft and AMD GPU drivers are still not even optimized for RDNA2. The AMD 6xxx GPUs will get faster as the drivers are optimized, and developers actually implement the newer technologies without a semi emulation layer that is optimized for Nvidia RTX hardware. (Now NVidia may keep the lead, as their hardware as specific ML processing, where AMD is doing the ML/Ai work in the existing shader pipeline.) Sony opted for faster uptick of development for current generation gaming, as things from the existing PC and console generations, translate easily to the PS5 RDNA, but is significantly limited in features & technologies that come from RDNA2 hardware. Sony cannot have RDNA2 hardware, as Microsoft helped AMD develop it, and Sony's silicon was finalized long before the RDNA2 silicon and features were implemented. 2) 3D Audio - The Xbox Series has MORE 3D audio technologies than the PS5, with the new 3D spatial hardware and engine, and it also outputs and translates to non-proprietary technologies like DTS and Dolby Atmos - specifically things the PS5 does not do because it is using a Sony only audio output format, that is effectively worthless right now. The tempest engine is interesting, but offers NOTHING that is not in the Xbox - as it does full 360 degree output, supporting up to like 64-128 speaker locations. 3D space is 3D space, there is no additional direction that the tempest is offering. Let me be clear here, as binaural in ear 3D audio is NOT NEW, and is fully supported on the Xbox Series. Except, the Xbox can output and reproduce it on SPEAKERS - something the PS5 CANNOT DO, as the 3D audio does not support speakers the PS5. Users expecting a speaker based 3D audio experience, will not currently get it with the PS5. The PS5's 3D audio is currently only Headphone only and limited to Sony's implementation, where the Xbox series supports DTS, Atmos, speakers and headphones, and can map to the user's ear shape, something that may be coming to the PS5 for headphone. ------ The PS5 is a great console, and has some good strengths, but it has no feature that is above the Xbox Series or PC technologies, and it also is not as full featured or as fast. Picking features that some bad tech reviews promoted as being PS5 'only' and saying these are the reason to buy a PS5 is just not accurate. Instead, talk about the dual shock (as you have) VR experiences, the UI and in game UI features that are unique, etc. (It is ok to prefer the PS5, but don't give people bad information to justify why.)

  15. Microsoft has a big 2021 planned for Windows and Surface

Hmmm none of it looks exciting. Same old direction confusion from Microsoft. Meanwhile Apple is going RUN not walk away from WinTel and AMD can't do anything to save them. The M1X, M2, M3 or whatever they will call it will win over the video industry once Premiere is ported. Windows is for corporate use and PC Master Race gaming, everyone else uses something else these days.

  24. OK, first off, how is the monitor connected to the laptop? (HDMI, Display port, etc) second, you said that you have integrated graphics as well as a GTX 1660. Have you checked that the Nvidia drivers are current, version 460.89 is the most current. Also I would attempt to disable the integrated graphics or the Nvidia, and see if the display comes back. I found this website that talks about the error 43, and how to potentially fix it. Also check AMD and see if your drivers are up to date, as that can cause issues as well. Third, check and see if there a specific driver for the external monitor, sometimes that can fix issues as well. As a last result, download and run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) and let it clean the system of all display drivers, and then reinstall them.

While all five entries are well deserved, only one - the Surface Duo - was both a monumental disappointment, a flop and a stupid idea to begin with. I guess that's why it's number one on the list. I sincerely hope that the person who pushed for Android on the Duo will be quietly let go - even if it is Nadella himself.

  31. Precisely. I'm surprised so many western media outlets are happy to regurgitate the nonsense the CCP comes out with to explain away their actions. Jack Ma got a bit too big for his boots and the CCP didn't like it so they shut him down (or at least took him down a peg or two) largely to make sure nobody else got any ideas, and to make it clear who's boss. That's it. None of this "monopolies won't be tolerated" nonsense. Please, western "journalists", stop reposting CCP press releases as "news" and actually do a bit of journalism and find out the real story. And you can start doing that with western news stories too while you're at it.

  40. Disable the insert key in Windows permanently

This thing drives me nuts when I am editing a post or using our CMS on Neowin. I found the solution here https://superuser.com/questions/31794/windows-insert-key-anti-functionality-accidentally-triggers-how-to-stop-it-perm for clarity, this for when the cursor starts replacing every character you have your cursor on rather than putting it in front of a character. Go to Start → Run → regedit Go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout Right-click on the right half of the screen and choose New → Binary Value Name the new value Scancode Map Enter 000000000000000002000000000052E000000000 Close regedit Reboot. Optional: you can take the Insert key off of your keyboard when done. Or do as I did and save the following as disable_insert_key.reg and merge (as an Administrator) into registry. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout] "Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,52,e0,00,00,00,00 Reboot + profit.

  41. Not going to happen. Most Biden supporters have better things to do than engage in trolling with Trump on Twitter just to 'own the libs' as they liked to say before their embarrassing landslide defeat. Under Biden I suspect Twitter will become a minor event used for mostly official announcements...you know, like a President with self respect and respect for the office would behave. "Landslide defeat"? Rs did much better than Ds in the past election (Ds almost lost their House majority for instance). The POTUS was an outlier, hence all the legal challenges. Then again, those with TDS aren't good with numbers.

  43. No. Reality is... Trump, bored because he can't do the job he conned his way into, lies on Twitter a hundred times a day (inciting violence, willful ignorance, and sedition) just to serve his malignant narcissist personality disorder. Biden will send the kind of normal political information we expect from boring, competent, hard at work political administrations who have more important things to do. But... Trump actually is pro-USA unlike the godless leftists who are headed towards communism the further left they go. anyone who can't see this is really blind. ever notice how the left always wants more power/control over peoples lives? for the record... we all know the democrats cheated as there is simply no way Biden got more votes than Obama did and Trump beat Obama comfortably.

If you are only opening multiple instances of one app, then you are correct and Groupy is probably not a product for you. The real 'power' of Groupy is when you open many different apps. That said, I'd still rather navigate 5 explorer windows in tabs rather than the taskbar but that's just me.

  46. Rich's comments in the article stand. There are only 10 releases of Windows 10 to the public. Only 1511 is no longer supported. Windows 7 needs ESU, and Windows 8.1 gets updates. You can argue that Windows 8 is included in your math.. but that's separate from 10. 20H2 is in development and doesn't count. Nonsense, there are 10 current versions of windows 10: 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, 2004. This is not the same at all as a service pack like windows 95-8.1 had, this is like windows 98 and windows 98 SE - entitely separate. To go from 1507 to 1511 or any other build you need to download an update file which upgrades the whole windows 10 system and puts the old system in C:\windows.old - it is completely separate. Yes it migrates your settings or files (if it doesn't just decide to delete them becuase why not) but it is not just a small update, and builds 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803 and 1809 have NO support for non-enterprise or paying business users. So no, you are completely wrong. The only one receiving no updates at all is 1511. The following builds are still receiving updates on non-enterprise versions: 1607 - Certain devices running Intel Clovertrail have updates until 2023 1703 - Surface hub (Though likely to be business oriented, it's still the non-enterprise version). 1809 - Support was extended until November 2020 1903/1909 2004 1507, 1607 and 1809 are LTSB/C. 1709 Enterprise support was extended until November 2020 1803 Enteprise support until November 2020 So yes, out of the 10 versions of Windows 10 released to date. Only 1 is unsupported all togther. I'm talking about non-business users, so LTSB is excluded, surface hub is excluded, this isn't just a 'business only' device, it's a device any consumer can purchase, and as a result the updates offers to comsumer level devices are what matter, just like I don't care what support IBM offers to it's #1 customer paying billions of dollars a year for licensing if I'm just buying a single item from them, clealy I'm not going to get anywhere near the same level of support. Rich's comments in the article stand. "This company supports nine out of the 10 versions of Windows 10 still" No mention of consumer specific support, literally just support. Of which 1 of the 10 versions of Windows 10 is currently out of support. Which, regardless of the way you look at it, leaves a device like this with a good chance that it will be supported, even if it's not Windows, and especially if it's aimed at a business market.
    1 point
  47. Y? Only Apple is the cool kid as far as updates are concerned That's exactly why. Microsoft has a lot to prove and showing that they can have a device supported longer than most other Android OEMs would be a good start. If I'm paying nearly 1400 for a device I'd expect it to last more than a few years. Our mobile mindset of keeping a phone for a year or 2 then getting something different is honestly a bad one. you don't see (most) people doing that with computers/laptops or other things that expensive...

  49. Beautiful device, but way overpriced. I don't understand how tech companies calculate and justify the price of dual screen devices. Sounds like this: "Hey, our device has 2 screens instead of 1! So let's double to price of a device which has similar specs!!" Technology-wise, it's only the screen that is doubled, not all the rest... Also, at $1400, they could at least have added a high-end camera.
