  1. Microsoft has a big 2021 planned for Windows and Surface

I’ll believe the UI refresh when I see it. Like before, this will be lipstick on a pig. The top-level UI elements will be updated, but once we’ll start digging in the UI the Windows 95 and Vista bits will still be there.

Hmmm none of it looks exciting. Same old direction confusion from Microsoft. Meanwhile Apple is going RUN not walk away from WinTel and AMD can't do anything to save them. The M1X, M2, M3 or whatever they will call it will win over the video industry once Premiere is ported. Windows is for corporate use and PC Master Race gaming, everyone else uses something else these days.

You forget a couple things though. At least be a bit original and don't steal my comment's style. I'm sure nonsense like this is welcome in the Apple marketing team. Join them. "Continuity" and "cohesiveness", LOL. Are you advertising a brand of glue? The most typo-riddled piece of propaganda I've ever seen. It's "number of apps", not "amount of apps", it's "above-average" not "above average", and "macOS" not "MacOS"; there must be a comma after "compatibility". And by the way, instead of "average and above-average users", you could write "almost everyone". It'd be a lie, but a grammatically correct one. Look in this very same article for a laptop under one grand. Battery life becomes important only when the device is useful enough to turn it on. Apple laptops are not.

You forget that Apple laptops are the most expensive and have the worst OS ever, i.e. macOS. A small malady kills the whole OS, there are not many apps for it (compared to Linux and Windows,) and it is only made for the U.S. market with little care for other international users. I mean sure, the laptops themselves are nothing short of dazzling, but that's it.

The upcoming year doesn't look that exciting to me... The UI refresh may be worth it on Windows proper but I have no interest in Android apps (especially with no Play Services) on the desktop. Windows 10X doesn't look to be ready for prime time in 2021 at all. Cloud Win32 programs? Come on Microsoft. LOL No expansion of AMD Ryzen chips on the Surface devices are going to be a real meh there. Windows on ARM is in a holding pattern until Microsoft comes out with a proper chipset as I expect little from Qualcomm.

Yep. I don't know why it's so difficult to completely overhaul the UI. Because Windows is about backwards compatibility. There is a reason Windows RT, Windows 10S and Windows 10X (despite not being out yet) failed.

It's not that easy. The devil is in details. Things like apps that won't print on A5 papers, because they were never designed for it. Poor translations. Apps translated to RTL languages that also write math from right to left! Apps that don't let you use DMY dates in citations because the citation style is, I don't know, Chicago or MLA. Developers who resort to analogies you don't understand. They say, "Who likes his breakfast cold?" and you respond, "Duh! Everyone!" Apple is not an international-minded company. Microsoft is, but have you seen Windows 10? (Sure, it has come a long way... And yet...)

Sometimes I really wonder if people actually think about the ideas they have because this has hands down got to be one of the dumbest suggestions I've ever seen in regards to windows. Hi. I am one of the most people. If the M1 manages to capture the "most people" market share (80%+, which Windows currently dominates,) I'd buy one. The biggest problem is that apps and games that matter don't run on it. And I don't live in the U.S. and have serious problems with U.S.-oriented defaults. For example, like 90% of the world, I use the metric system.

The continuity and cohesiveness of the ecosystem that Apple provides has no match in any other platforms. The amount of apps for the MacOS is sufficient for the average and above average user and now with the iOS compatibility it's even bigger. The price of the laptop is no longer a problem as well since you don't get a decent laptop under a grand and the MBA will give you P3-validated screen and the whole day battery life which you won't find on any other devices in the same price range. Sure it will cut you down on ports though

Aero was probably the most consistent UI Microsoft has ever had. Followed by XP and then 95 (first release, not that nonsense active desktop variant). The only inconsistent stuff left by XP and maybe 7 were legacy icons that most users didn’t even notice, use. It wasn’t until Windows 8 where Microsoft lost their minds with UI, and since then it’s only ever gotten worse. I have zero hopes MS will course correct and continue to evolve and “complete” their UI, since where they make will based on those terrible Windows 8/10 design ideologies.

    (1) A UI refresh is most definitely needed. Make the default UI more desktop/laptop oriented. Have an optional smartphone oriented UI available; instead of it being the current default. Windows-7 has a nice clean look that needs to return. (2) Get the "control" or "customizing" functions back into one central location; instead of being splattered all over the place. The WIndows-7 Control Panel was an excellent solution...why was it abandoned? Remember, if one can't find a function or feature, it does not exist--contrary to all the hype to the contrary. (3) Focus on stability and reliability, instead of tacking on new features. Its probably too late to return to modular programming, so now any failure in an obscure feature/function causes the entire OS to fail.

Wait, do you realize you are recommending a CPU that is significantly slower? On single core/thread it is 25% slower, and in multi-threading (all cores) it is over 25% slower. This will affect EVERYTHING from gaming to productivity. The GPU speed difference is tiny, and in non-gaming, the Intel GPU is faster for video encoding/decoding, etc. Intel or not, don't recommend something slow. A good performance reference site is PassMark - CPUBenchmark and VideoCardBenchmark - the CPU Single Thread Rating results are representative of gaming and engineering level performance, and the Average CPU Mark shows all core and maximum core utilization for high thread count productivity software like Blender. https://youtu.be/_pnTcerS7Vw" rel="external nofollow">https://youtu.be/_pnTcerS7Vw" rel="external nofollow">https://youtu.be/_pnTcerS7Vw" rel="external nofollow">https://youtu.be/_pnTcerS7Vw" rel="external nofollow">https://youtu.be/_pnTcerS7Vw https://youtu.be/Ob6KMhgfLjc" rel="external nofollow">https://youtu.be/Ob6KMhgfLjc" rel="external nofollow">https://youtu.be/Ob6KMhgfLjc" rel="external nofollow">https://youtu.be/Ob6KMhgfLjc" rel="external nofollow">https://youtu.be/Ob6KMhgfLjc From the YouTube comments: Aswanth Suresh 2 months ago Which would be the better option K2S gaming 1 month ago I3 10100 2 time faster The first video is meaningless because it also uses an external GPU. Why? Most mainstream manufacturers are still selling Chromebooks with just 4GB of RAM in the budget segment (cheapest 8GB offering costs €399) https://www.coolblue.nl/en/laptops/chromebooks People miss the point of this article when they comment things like: for $50 more you can get an i5 or for an extra $150 a Nvidia 1050Ti GPU. Yes upgradability is there but we are talking about what people can afford right now in the ultra budget price point, and worry about upgrades and addons later. Yeah, I basically agree with you. those on a pretty tight budget and have a computer that's probably 10+ years old (which could vary depending on how good their computer was at the time they got it. but that 10+ year figure should be a pretty good ball park estimate) would see a solid all around boost to their computer getting something like mentioned in the article and 8GB of RAM is still solid like I was saying. plus, you make a good point because if someone opted for a i5 instead of that i3 and 16GB of RAM instead of 8GB of RAM, that's going to boost the price quite a bit (especially for those on a really tight budget) and while still not a bad price, if one is trying to keep the price at a minimum, one is going to have to cut some corners which seems that one will have to sacrifice the CPU and RAM a bit, unless they happen to have decent components they can use from their previous computer (like say SSD or GPU etc) they are moving on from in which case they could either save more $ or get a bit more CPU or RAM for similar price etc. but about the 4GB of RAM... even 4GB is passable for someone who's not doing nothing too RAM intensive as the browser will be the most likely culprit to burn through the 4GB of RAM (but at 8GB of RAM it gives one a bit more room to breathe) especially if they got multiple tabs open and leave their computer/browser running for days or weeks etc. but going down to 2GB things would really start to suffer, even on a light RAM use OS like Linux, if one does much beyond very basic stuff and is generally light usage. but I doubt anyone would suggest going down to 4GB let alone 2GB of RAM for a newer build as 8GB makes sense, but anything under that does not when buying new hardware, budget or not. because if someone can't afford the 8GB of RAM, they would be better off waiting until they can unless they need a new computer and need it NOW.

Yeah, 2021 will be the year MS finally rids Windows off all those old bugs and UI bits that have been there since Win95. Just like every year so far they have done! Not. Avalon/Aero was supposed to do that. And then Metro. And then Fluent. And now Sun Valley. And in 25 years we will still have that crap in the OS because desing-by-committee model simply does not work. Maybe MS will eventually figure this out too. But until then - no, Windows will not change, the old bug will not be fixed - because MS is too busy making "new features" that a) no one asked for and b) MS will kill in 1-3 years anyway since c) really, no one asked for them. Then finally some new excited intern make a wonderful, actually beautiful feature / UI...and it will be killed in a committee because MS is so worried that it might break the compability with dos version of Lotus 123...or it might be to "different" to some of their corporate customers. It might actually need some learning (for about 10 seconds!). Better kill. Bring back the UI from Windows 2.0. Like they are now doing with fluent. Instead of "animations" and "material" and all those things we were promised, we get monochrome flat 2d UI. Great use of power in modern PCs with super powerful GPUs. Bring back the UI from 33 years ago. It's great. One of our committees tested it. It ranked really high among the +80 years old secretaries.

Not bad. but it makes me wonder how much more $ a modern i5 range CPU would cost in comparison to that i3-10100? (since newer i5's seem to be 6-core/12-thread) ; because from a quick look online my i5-3550 (4-core/4-thread) ain't all that much worse than this i3-10100(4-core/8-thread). sure, there is a fair performance gap (maybe something around 24-32% from what one site was claiming) but probably not worth shelling out $375 for, especially given I got a 1050 Ti 4GB GPU which it's pretty safe to say my setup would be superior in some aspects like games because my CPU is still generally 'good enough' but the GPU mine would clearly pull ahead of that i3 setup. but I plan on holding out at least for a few more years before upgrading my current setup which my basic motherboard I had since May 2012 (although CPU(i3-2120 to i5-3550)/RAM(8GB to 16GB) was upgraded earlier this year for minimal $ and should help extend the life of my current PC a fair amount). but I guess a setup like described is probably for someone who's on fairly ancient hardware (like probably at least 10+ years old) and wants to keep cost at a minimum in which case a setup similar to what's described in this article is probably a worthwhile upgrade. but I suspect when I do get around to upgrading, depending on how much stuff is at the time etc, I might just opt for transferring over my Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD (which I had since May 2015) along with my 1080p monitor (which I had for nearly 11 years now) over to a newer build which will probably save me at least around $150. but once I do get around to building another PC I won't be getting a computer with less than 16GB of RAM otherwise it will sort of defeat the purpose since while 8GB of RAM is not bad, it would slightly cripple a more modern CPU/GPU setup, on games. but I get this article is not meant for gaming and I get that. but I can see how someone trying to shave off costs could get by with 8GB of RAM as I figure that's sort of a bare minimum when building a PC straight up and one can easily get by with that for general usage etc. p.s. a quick question... does anyone know if Windows 7 installs on the newest CPU's and the like? NOTE: I know Windows 7 is no longer supported but I am just wondering whether Windows 7 will still install/function on a modern CPU at all.

Another thing that's reportedly coming is support for Android apps in the Microsoft Store. Codenamed Project Latte, no one really knows why Microsoft would do this, especially since it killed off its initial attempt at running Android apps, Project Astoria. It's fairly simple actually, especially when you understand why Astoria was killed off. That all started when Win 8 first launched and Microsoft was trying to get Windows Phone 8 going. The idea was UWP would be the equivalent of Cocoa Touch in iOS and Microsoft Store would be their Apple Store. Except - they couldn't motivate anyone to write UWP apps since it was a completely different toolset from Windows (unlike Cocoa Touch which still used macOS underpinnings on iOS). So, the idea was to create Project Astoria for Android and Ironwood for iOS to provide cross-system platforms and allow devs to port (or even run) their apps on Win Phone 8 easily. Then someone (betting it was Sinsofsky) suddenly realised 'crap - then they'll have NO reason to write UWP apps' and shut both projects down. Didn't help. UWP was a flop even on Windows because of the same problem: it was touch centric and incompatible with Win32 toolsets which meant having to write two versions of everything. Eventually they started merging UWP and Win32 - but YEARS too late. Win Phone died for a lack of ecosystem and Win 10 put the nail in UWP's coffin as a Win32 replacement. Which is stalling Win 10 and Win 10 X in tablet environments because devs aren't making touch apps for Win 10 (and, well, Google hates Microsoft). So, finding a way to run Android apps "natively" in Windows gives Microsoft 2/3s of an ecosystem that's compatible with the Duo. They still won't have Google Play Services... but here's the trick... neither do Chinese phones. So, if MSFT comes up with a replacement that's tightly integrated with Windows - donates it to AOSP Android... instant 1.7B customers Google can't touch. Win/win Windows.

    1 point
  36. Good to hear that it is working like it is supposed to. It will not hurt anything to run Memtest,it's just to rule out the RAM being the issue. I have had brand new out of the package RAM that ended up testing bad > month, so you can never be too careful and check everything, even if it highly unlikely that it could be the problem. Even with years of experience of building computers, I have found that sometimes it is the smallest, most obscure thing that causes the biggest problems, like something not screwed down all the way, or a cable not completely plugged in, and have spent hours upon hours trying to figure out what happened, only to discover something minute like the a fore mentioned items!

lol... easier to find budget processor.... what a nice advert for Intel altogether that is... Found a better option for the same budget and with a beefier integrated graphics. just swap mobo and CPU against : Biostar B550MH AMD Ryzen 3 3200G And you have a platform with better (thus still weak) integrated GPU, where - if you wish - you could put the best CPU from the Ryzen 5000 series, platform supports OCing and doesn't set your house on fire. Rest the same however RAM is imho too slow (but I know why the author selected the 2666 memory --- cause intel on 460 doesn't support faster because it has locked it, LoL...) and also PSU could be a tad beefier to support dedicated GPUs.

I can think of three reasons why: 1: It's their pride that gets in their way. 2: They truly think that they are the best. 3: Cult thinking doesn't like change. Or they are decent phones that people like for certain features the competition doesn’t have or because they are used to/like the interface/device. While others prefer another phone brand with features that it has the competition doesn’t offer or because they are used to/like the interface/device. I don’t get this tribal mentality in tech where if you prefer/buy something that some other people might not personally like then a group of them will brand you a prideful cultist. Like just use whatever you like for the purposes you want and accept other people will do the same for themselves.

The odds of someones mtu being so wrong is just nonsense... Now I could see if you were running some vpn software or something on your machine.. Say for work, it might adjust down your mtu, or set a mss value that is lower to account for the overhead of the vpn tunnel.. The old cisco vpn clients could do this for example.. But it would be something like 1310 or something like that. But I just don't see how anyone's machine would have their ethernet set down to 576.. Without some major intervention from the user doing something they really shouldn't be doing in the first place. For sure I would label it click bait title.. Like saying Add 10 years to your lifespan.. And then telling you to not smoke So its like this video yeah if your mtu is 576 its F'd up Adjust it to what it should be will make a difference in your speed. Just like smoking is bad for you, if you don't smoke you will prob live longer than someone that does hehehe
