  1. The web is becoming an annoying garbagefest

What boggles my mind are the sites that STILL think people want auto play videos. Do they really think people say "WOW, an video that started playing all by itself as I was trying to read the article on the page, it really helped me get engaged in the article." for me personally, it makes me want to never return to their site!

If you aren't catfished into clicking on BS headlines that claim something and then end up being nothing more than clickbait with nothing of what is claimed in the headline (like for example "Air date for Strange New Worlds" and then it ends up claiming "sometime in 2021" those sort of articles). I immediately block these sites from Google News, which is mainly where it happens for me. Here are some annoyances in no particular order Random captchas showing up on sites I visit every week (like for example my local supermarket order online) without VPN, why then? North American sites denying entry for visitors from the EU (seriously F*** YOU!) GDPR cookie banner annoyance Yes I do have an extension to bypass GDPR cookie warnings, but while it works in 80% of the time, it creates an additional annoyance on sites it doesn't work on by disabling the page altogether until I disable it manually for that site and reload the page/accept the cookies. Honestly, people couldn't be more annoying if they tried with just these examples.

virtual carriers, they own no hardware. they sell you a sim/phone and set their own prices and strike deals with the main networks to use their infrastructure.

  8. "Also, the phone's box comes without a charger, but you can buy a bundle that includes that charger at no additional cost." Yeah, but at least for now you can get it for free. This makes more sense as an environmental effort, you can reduce how much space your box takes if you don't need it, but the charger is free if you do. We still have to see how it works in other countries, though. That seems like an enlightened direction to take: just add an option during checkout that says "I don't need another charger" so people can pick what they want.

Autoplay videos with sound....they can burn in the fiery pits of hell. Nothing infuriates me like having 5/8/77 cranked loud and one of these damn autoplays come up...usually a few decibels above my music. Mostly happens on news sites (CNN, ABC, Fox, etc.) ... like I can't read the damn article I clicked on. It must also have the video segment. /sigh

  11. Here are the 100 bestselling Steam games of 2020

Mafia: Definitive Edition (2020) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) are the only games I played in 2020 worth mentioning (and most importantly ill likely be replaying those from time-to-time which is where games are ultimately made or broke as time passes). for the record... I still like Mafia (2002) more than the 2020 update as, like I have said before, Mafia (2002) is my #1 video game experience to date and even to this very day (at least as of my last replay in Aug 2018) it's my #1 video game experience. I have not played DOOM: Eternal (or even the previous game yet etc) but I suspect I might like it as I liked DooM back-in-the-day along with DooM 3 (2004) as come to think of it, DooM 3 was one of the last (and few) times I was WOWed by graphics. but... that was when the alpha demo leaked in I think it was Nov 2002 as by the time the actual game came out in 2004, while it's graphics where still on the high end, it was not as WOW level by that point as other games closed the gap some. p.s. I can't believe GTA5 is still selling THAT much. do people think the general single player story mission on that is that great? ; because I think other games easily top GTA5 (like Mafia series/RDR series) as GTA series characters etc in general are decent, as the games are good enough to finish once, but have no lasting impact on me like the Mafia games etc do as the Mafia series tends to have a much stronger impact on me emotionally which is why I classify Mafia (2002) (on PC) as a masterpiece (a word I rarely use). the 2nd game, which is pretty much my #2 gaming experience to date, did not quite capture the magic of the first one but it was not too far from it.

AWESOME to see "Wallpaper Engine" on the Bronze list. It's a $4 utility that plays live desktop wallpapers of every kind and that you can create. The wallpapers are free and there are literally thousands of them. The developer has been making updates almost daily for years now, so this is no fly by night operation.

  14. A look back at the best laptops of 2020

You forget that Apple laptops are the most expensive and have the worst OS ever, i.e. macOS. A small malady kills the whole OS, there are not many apps for it (compared to Linux and Windows,) and it is only made for the U.S. market with little care for other international users. I mean sure, the laptops themselves are nothing short of dazzling, but that's it.

They likely are using an API that costs them per use, and bots rack up the costs, big time. I had to do it for one of our clients after a bot ate up their API call allotment in a couple days, that were meant for an entire month. The Dell I posted above also allows for PD via USB C as well so it becomes a one cable solution. I think LG might have a similar offering as well, but I think the KVM functionality is unique to Dell. It does have a sleep issue with Macs though, I forgot about that. It will constantly wake up, sleep, wake up, sleep. I just unplug it when not in use.

It doesn't look like there is a way to do it permanently. Someone suggested having a cmd command run the application and then you could customise the icon for the cmd command, but the problem with that is that when you run the command the application opens separately with its default icon.

  28. Yeah let's just take all supported software, dump it all and create a new thing with 0 software for it and require software developers to recode half of their apps from scratch. Sometimes I really wonder if people actually think about the ideas they have because this has hands down got to be one of the dumbest suggestions I've ever seen in regards to windows. If it ain't broke, don't break it. It's not about the all or nothing approaches like you're suggesting (backwards compatibility vs starting from scratch). There needs to be a balance of transparent backwards compatibility (Rosetta) and a CLEAR direction for new software, but the benifits of removing all that backwards compatibility can't be over looked. Less clunky system, faster, more efficient, less issues with upgrades into the future, easier to overhaul UI, etc. We need Windows 10X to do this. Let's look at iOS as a great example: 32-bit OS until, what, iOS 9? Then 64-bit. There was a 32-bit compatability until iOS 11 after which you could no longer run 32-bit applications at all, now you might think "oh well" but no, that's ######. Lots of that software was PAID, and essentially it was all dumped, and you as a user have no recourse to get your money back, and because it's apple there's no way to revert to an older version of iOS an dun software YOU HAVE PAID FOR. Similar thing happened with iOS 13 and the dark mode, it broke so many systems and they needed updates to fix either crashing on startup or all text being unreadable, again, apps that were old didn't get updated. There is no need or want from people in the world to do what you want, just like no-one else outside of neowin in the world wanted the original xbox x DRM system. A normal user doesn't care what underlying legacy systems are, they just care will their software work, business users have a similar mindset but they also want it to be secure plus they're more likely to be using old software. There is no architecture change e.g. from a new ISA, so there is actually 0 want for this system you describe from basically everyone in the world, least not from microsoft who's windows 10 can only be described as blunder after blunder, I don't think they would be in a rush to dump a legacy system that has, what, 30 years of backend regression tests for it to be binned and completely replaced with something that would start with nothing. If you want an incompatible system with a different UI style, go install a linux distro with e17 - that ticks your boxes, no software compatibility, entirely different UI - best of luck!

I recently bought the U2520D variant and I couldn't be more happy with it. Combined with the AE515M stereo soundbar it's a dream. 1440p @ 125% gives you approx. 20-25% more space than 1080p (so no need for a 27'' monitor) without being too small or too large and it's definitely worth the extra premium. I always spent more on a monitor and prefer to downgrade on some other component that I can upgrade later, as a monitor usually stays with me a long time and it's essential to my work (engineer, CAD). The USB-C charging comes also very handy, with only one cable between laptop and monitor to transfer image, sound and data (if you use the USB ports on the monitor that is). If you decide to spend the extra cash I believe that you will be satisfied.

  33. A look back at the best laptops of 2020

It's not that easy. The devil is in details. Things like apps that won't print on A5 papers, because they were never designed for it. Poor translations. Apps translated to RTL languages that also write math from right to left! Apps that don't let you use DMY dates in citations because the citation style is, I don't know, Chicago or MLA. Developers who resort to analogies you don't understand. They say, "Who likes his breakfast cold?" and you respond, "Duh! Everyone!" Apple is not an international-minded company. Microsoft is, but have you seen Windows 10? (Sure, it has come a long way... And yet...) Never heard of A5, just use what everyone else uses instead, Half letter. Such an American answer. Sure, just get the whole world excluding North America and parts of Latin America to switch from ISO 216 to ANSI. Simple enough. I should also point out that the Surface is hardly a laptop, if we're talking form factor. Go ahead and pop one of those on your lap and try to use it... let me know how it goes, I'll wait.

Fair enough. I guess it boils down to his budget. If he thinks that something larger than a 24" monitor is overkill though, I'm not sure he'll want to fork out for a 38" display. I stand by my suggestion, I think one 27" monitor would be the way to go. Reasonably priced and you do find yourself using the extra screen space gained over a 24".

  35. Work Monitors for Home Office

We had a couple of 38" monitors knocking around the office and they were neat. If someone wanted to give one to me I wouldn't complain. But you could get 2x27" monitors cheaper. And given that Emn1ty already says that he feels one 27" monitor would be wasted on him - it won't, believe me - I think the 27" is the way to go.

You forget a couple things though. At least be a bit original and don't steal my comment's style. I'm sure nonsense like this is welcome in the Apple marketing team. Join them. "Continuity" and "cohesiveness", LOL. Are you advertising a brand of glue? The most typo-riddled piece of propaganda I've ever seen. It's "number of apps", not "amount of apps", it's "above-average" not "above average", and "macOS" not "MacOS"; there must be a comma after "compatibility". And by the way, instead of "average and above-average users", you could write "almost everyone". It'd be a lie, but a grammatically correct one. Look in this very same article for a laptop under one grand. Battery life becomes important only when the device is useful enough to turn it on. Apple laptops are not.

Aero was probably the most consistent UI Microsoft has ever had. Followed by XP and then 95 (first release, not that nonsense active desktop variant). The only inconsistent stuff left by XP and maybe 7 were legacy icons that most users didn’t even notice, use. It wasn’t until Windows 8 where Microsoft lost their minds with UI, and since then it’s only ever gotten worse. I have zero hopes MS will course correct and continue to evolve and “complete” their UI, since where they make will based on those terrible Windows 8/10 design ideologies.

Out of the whole list, I have only played a few of them: Doom Eternal - Hands down one of the best games of the year for me. RDR2 - A very well done game Cyberpunk 2077 - On the PC it plays pretty good, minor graphical bugs, but overall a good game The Witcher 3 - Could spend along time with this game! No Mans Sky - I don't really know what to think about it, I own it, have played a fair bit, but I really don't see what the hype was all about. Dying Light - Can not wait for the sequel, this game is a truly fun game that I again could spend a long time playing. Far Cry 5 - Interesting storyline, good graphics, and decent gameplay does have replayability. Remnant: From the Ashes - This game to me is very interesting and confusing, I have not gotten very far in it, but it is a decent game to me

    (1) A UI refresh is most definitely needed. Make the default UI more desktop/laptop oriented. Have an optional smartphone oriented UI available; instead of it being the current default. Windows-7 has a nice clean look that needs to return. (2) Get the "control" or "customizing" functions back into one central location; instead of being splattered all over the place. The WIndows-7 Control Panel was an excellent solution...why was it abandoned? Remember, if one can't find a function or feature, it does not exist--contrary to all the hype to the contrary. (3) Focus on stability and reliability, instead of tacking on new features. Its probably too late to return to modular programming, so now any failure in an obscure feature/function causes the entire OS to fail.
