  1. Discuss: What would you want to see in a Nintendo Switch Pro?

I don't really understand the switch. it's a product that seems to come with so many caveats i don't know why anyone would buy it. It's slow, heavy, has poor battery life, and low quality screens, crappy joysticks which break like crazy, and people buy it like nuts. I don't understand.

God I'm so tired of that excuse to make ###### "strong" female leads that we should just accept, otherwise it'd just clear we're insecure betas. I'm secure AF. I like movies with strong female leads, in fact now that I have a daughter I go way out of my way to make sure a greater portion of our entertainment is built around actually well-rounded strong (deserved) female leads. In fact my favourite movie ever, The Fifth Element, is lead by the strongest character (a female). The fact of the matter is the majority of these movies, where people like you need to constantly defend it by bashing people for not liking it by attacking their masculinity, exist with these criticisms you feel you must attack because these are NOT STRONG FEMALE LEADS. These are ###### mary sues with undeserved powers, respect and admiration whilst diminishing the integrity of the character of the males that dare oppose them mentally or physically. It's hogshit. It's clear agenda pushing and it's propagated solely by the inability of others to differentiate between deserved criticism and "toxic masculinity". Give me movies like Lucy, Anna, The Fifth Element, Terminator 2, Alien, Hannah. And ###### off with Charlie's Angels where literally every single white guy is a bad guy (shocker), and all these other glorified statements of how terrible I am for being a male. Now, I do believe females need their time in the spotlight with these action movies, and etc. But please stop doing it to the detriment of men, because it's sexist ###### and it needs to stop.

If you aren't catfished into clicking on BS headlines that claim something and then end up being nothing more than clickbait with nothing of what is claimed in the headline (like for example "Air date for Strange New Worlds" and then it ends up claiming "sometime in 2021" those sort of articles). I immediately block these sites from Google News, which is mainly where it happens for me. Here are some annoyances in no particular order Random captchas showing up on sites I visit every week (like for example my local supermarket order online) without VPN, why then? North American sites denying entry for visitors from the EU (seriously F*** YOU!) GDPR cookie banner annoyance Yes I do have an extension to bypass GDPR cookie warnings, but while it works in 80% of the time, it creates an additional annoyance on sites it doesn't work on by disabling the page altogether until I disable it manually for that site and reload the page/accept the cookies. Honestly, people couldn't be more annoying if they tried with just these examples.

  15. SOLVED (sort of). So since the Windows 7 OEM disc was apparently not going to help me and the retail version wouldn't as I had no key for it (other than the one that is tied to my PC) and this wasn't working, that wasn't working, cloning wasn't working so on and so forth. I cloned SYSTEM_DRV to the SSD. I then went in to disk management, created the relevant partition at the end. I then cloned Lenovo_Recovery to the SSD. The numbers were slightly out so i had to go back to disk management and adjust. I fired the laptop up and it wanted to recover so i allowed it but then it wouldn't boot and gave me some error message linking to some folder in Windows once it had finished. So i then used the Lenovo Recovery Boot Media CD and the 3 Lenovo Recovery Data DVDs. Windows is now up and running. I'm going to have to go through the painstaking process of setting it up how I want but at least it's working.

They are designed to use very little bandwidth so I wouldn't worry about that, you might be pulling more from BMP image content on certain sites and other things pulling data like social media integrations (we do not have any of this btw). Others have already pointed it out, but a site like WindowsCentral is doing far more in the background than we are, we just have the generic advertising and that is why we aren't all millionaires or have a full team of full time staff on payroll, or venture capitol backing 😛

I pull about 4TB a month right now with normal usage, kids going to virtual school on web conferences all day (That alone eats up over 1TB a month according to my DPI monitoring system) then add in streaming, and then work from home (which its another 1+TB) and for the work from home I've heard "why doesnt work pay for it" yeah work is going to pay for internet for 100 to 1000 users for who knows how long......... and they'd also say you could only use it for work then and that creates another problem of comcast only lets you have one account per address so no way to have a work and home internet connection (Comcast is the only ISP I can get where I am at, not even DSL is avaiable)

I wouldn't mind if the Switch Pro was a dedicated stationary console. Paired with a Switch Lite for portable use, it would be a great combo. The Switch Lite is soooo much more comfortable for hand-held use, that my regular Switch has simply become a stationary / full-time docked console anyway.

  22. Microsoft has a big 2021 planned for Windows and Surface

Let's look at iOS as a great example: 32-bit OS until, what, iOS 9? Then 64-bit. There was a 32-bit compatability until iOS 11 after which you could no longer run 32-bit applications at all, now you might think "oh well" but no, that's ######. Lots of that software was PAID, and essentially it was all dumped, and you as a user have no recourse to get your money back, and because it's apple there's no way to revert to an older version of iOS an dun software YOU HAVE PAID FOR. I agree with you for the most part. But people don't just want software that works, they want software that works as expected. If the software isn't updated to keep in line with the new system, features, interface, etc. then it eventually doesn't work as expected and the experience is bad, even if it does work. This example isn't quite in line, but here in Aus, our BoM (weather forecasters) put out an app for Apple devices. A month or so later that same app was ported across to Android, and not updated for years. Even when it was new on Android, it was a terrible experience because it expected an iOS system, so animations were direct from iOS, back buttons didn't work, and it was just a clunky iOS 4 mess on an Android 2.3 system (the app survived till Android 5 days, but no one used it). We live in a modern world where things get updated daily. Not saying that's a great thing, but that's how it is. Apples grace period and transparent compatibility with a set time frame (generally two release cycles), is implemented brilliantly, and it allows them to keep their systems much more efficient. Developers know the path they need to go down if their app is to remain compatible, and if their users are paying for such a product, they better well get their ###### together and have something in place by the time that support ends. And some times a code refresh is what an app needs too to remain relevant and responsive, so while it may be a lot of work each time Apple or MS change their backend, if done right (and not that frequently) it is actually a good thing. Eg. I can't imagine Photoshop is using much of the same code from the PowerPC days! Sure, but Adobe makes products for end consumers. What I mean by "Backwards compatibility for businesses" are companies like your local supermarket. Old, clunky, duck-taped together software the company relies on. My local Tesco got new self-checkout registers around half a year ago. Nice capacitive touchscreen, gorilla glass screen etc... but it runs Windows XP, because it has to. (Maybe it runs the POS2009, not sure, I just saw the bootscreen once) I guess my understanding of what Windows 10X is may be different to you. From what MS has hinted, I believe it is a succession plan to some extent, but only for certain markets. Consumer PC & tablet users would end up on 10X, a fresh system without all the backwards compatibility that the average user just does not need. For everyone else wanting to hold on to 20 year old software, there's the usual Windows 10. But eventually that will go too. Not after a measly two years, or even 5. But hopefully 10 years after a successful Win10X rollout to most markets, the old school software will have been replaced with something newer that works on all systems. Personally I don't want to be stuck with a bloated (albeit powerful) pig of a OS for another 20 years that's holding onto compatibility for a bunch of poorly written propitiatory programs. Most of us don't need that. MS consumer focus isn't clear. I get most of it's money is in big business, but it can do both, and that is what Win10X is supposed to be. Also if a supermarkets new POS system is running Windows XP (or whatever), then what is the issue with backwards compatibility in Windows 10? Seems irrelevant, or they already dropped that particular compatible component.. Why is the OS that a supermarket runs on their POS equipment of any concern to you? Do you baulk when you see mcdonalds using DOS on their systems in store because it's 50 years old and has no GUI? No, it is perfectly fine for these places. Supermarket/fast food/etc. systems are air-gapped, they are not internet accessible at all, they are on an internal only network, so they could be running windows 3.11 if they want, it is of no concern to you. As for the comment about all software using legacy APIs being poorly written, that's something only someone that doesn't really understand anything would say. If you can write software in 1996 and that software still runs AS-IS TODAY on windows 10 without issues, that's a damn good piece of software that was properly designed and tested I referred to the POS because @dustojnikhummer was trying to use it to justify backwards compatibility.. Frankly it didn't work for that argument, they can use it as long as they want for all I care. As you said, air gapped, and that systems OS has zero effect on Windows 10X, as both can continue to exist. We seem to be on the same page just FYI. If something written 20+ years ago still runs on Windows 10 today, then brilliant. And with Win10 & Win10X side by side for a while, you get what you want, consumers get what they want. Different user groups, backwards compatibility not required for one of them. Both existing at the same time. What a time we live in! And consumers will not pick Windows 10X... Agreed, because MS keeps focusing on the wrong aspect. They need apps. Useful apps. Powerful apps. Made by all the known developers. Not web apps. Not 60 versions of crappy drawing apps. Not something designed for an OS that is not Windows 10. They need developer buy-in. Which means they first need a single, clear, powerful, long term, future proof path to follow. But also maybe working with the developers to get their apps on there. I find it amazing that Apple announced their plans, and by the time it was released (or very soon after), both Adobe and (ironically) Microsoft had their suite of apps ready to run native. How can MS not get this sort of buy in? It took Adobe years to get something half decent into the MS Store. And then it's muddied by the other poor attempts from Win8 era. At least Windows has a decent browser this time around, with the option of web apps, as a last alternative. "They need developer buy-in. Which means they first need a single, clear, powerful, long term, future proof path to follow. But also maybe working with the developers to get their apps on there." They have one, it's called win32 and it's been around for over 25 years - see, long term, stable, great software... You don't seem to see that you're asking for is what already exists True, it's done us soooo well up until now. But isn't the problem win32 can't run native on some systems though? My understanding is that if we just stick to intel/amd compatible machines, we'd be fine. Have we not reached the end of the road for win32 yet? I don't think that using the same system that was around when I was learning my alphabet on a chalk board is they way to look into the future. And I won't lie, while it sounds to good to be true, having an app that works on a phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, game console, VR headset and anywhere else possible, without needing to be rewritten, that would be the dream. Win32 is a bunch of API functions, it's not a programming language, it's not an instruction set. In fact windows NT shipped for intel, arm, mips, dec - win32 existed for all of them. Regardless of whatever API you're using, the file needs to be compiled for your target architecture, the library calls are something else

MS should work with AMD to come up with something like this: https://www.indiegogo.com/proj...-game-console-for-aaa-games It's a switch sized, handheld PC(like the Sony Via ultramobile pcs); but having an AMD APU(ryzen 3+vega 11, 15w) could run most of the popular (non-AAA) games at 720p/60fps or 1080p/30fps.

To me, the point of Rogue One was the fact that it was a tragedy from the get-go. No sense watering that down with, "We'll let these folks get away so it's not too depressing for the audience, because heaven forbid they can't handle it." The whole movie was about giving you the whole story behind a simple line from the previous movies about the lives and sacrifices made for the information. The fact that everyone died, even the characters you wanted to like, was exactly the point. It was a tragedy in the Shakespearean sense, not the watered down Millennial sense. I loved it. Hollywood, as a whole, needs to start paying attention to the failures of their SJW initiative. They tried it with Ghostbusters, and it flopped hard. They've tried it in other movies and TV Shows, and they're flopping as well. I tried to watch the new Sabrina the Teenage Witch show and it's message was basically, "A girl can't win unless she cheats, and that's perfectly acceptable." That's not building UP women or their self-esteem, it's telling them they ARE weaker/dumber, and should seek alternative means to compensate for it. And this notion that my generation was only filled with weak/worthless eye candy when it comes to females is freakin' stupid. In the Wonder Woman I grew up with, Steve Trevor was the sidekick, not Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman. Charlies Angels went out and kicked ass while Bosley and Charlie sat on their asses. Etc. It's complete garbage, and the audience knows it, when you go out of your way to intentionally make "the other side" so weak/dumb that OF COURSE your side looks good... instead of actually giving them a story where they get to prove they're worth the respect.

  37. Toner, manufacturer or generic?

i have had a printer destroyed by generic, i had tried 5 different brands, they all leaked and even though the amazon refunded me the purchases, it was still not worth it, as the ink went all over the internals of the printer (HP) I have been buying the generic brother and xerox cartrigies with some luck. and i have been buying the large volume originals xerox for work.. you just don't know, but i would not recommend it for a hp laserjets home printers if you print smaller volume, the risk is not worth the reward. if you print a lot, and if you are lucky with the brand, then yes, they can be just as good, and save you 50% or more!!!

  38. The Mandalorian

Exactly, so this baseless ad-hominem "You don't like it because boys can't cope with strong female leads, you're all just mysoginists" (also known as the "Sony Ghostbusters Tactic") is utter hogwash. Heck even to the point that Rogue One was possibly my favourite modern SW movie. It's all about priorities: Filoni's priorities seem to be good stories and character development Kennedy's seem to be shoehorned inclusivity and setpieces I'm all for inclusivity, but not at the cost of the actual story or trampling over existing cannon. My generation grew up watching Ep6 at the cinema and had our "Hero Luke" that we had held on to for decades. We wanted to be him and play with lightsabres as a kid, we read about his ongoing stories as a teen, we saw his back story in our 20s, we played games that skirted close to his world in our 30s. And then he was suddenly turned into some grumpy, weird old hermit in our 40s - with such a thin backstory for this change that it wasn't acceptable. Then Filoni and Favreau reminded us of the Jedi Master that we last saw on screens in 1983. And it wasn't to anyone's detriment. It didn't hurt any wannabe-victim society group. It wasn't forced and it wasn't unjustified - heck it was fully explained via Moff Gideon's facial expressions. Was it a little deus-ex machina? Sure, for now. But it's going somewhere. And let's look at it this way - what has kept Disney afloat in 2020? Disney+, and what is the ONE THING currently worth watching on Disney+, the one thing that has pushed subscriptions through the roof? Yup, the awesome storytelling, world building, character arcs, reverence to cannon and presentation of The Mandalorian. Realistically, Disney should look at Kennedy and her cohorts (massively including Pablo Hidalgo for his stupid comments*) and realise that they aren't the massive money spinners that they thought they would be. Did the sequel trilogy make dollar? Sure. But did it setup an ongoing franchise for long-term storytelling and a bankable future? Sweet lord no. * Telling someone who cried at the season finale that "Emotions are not for sharing"... 'Scuse me? I cried like a baby, and Disney love that because there's no easier way to get people to part with money than to play upon emotions. When they play the SW theme in the fireworks and hold that note for just a couple of seconds longer, or when they play the theme lightly on piano, they know what they are doing. It's the same bankable nostalgia a showing us a Jedi Master arrive in a single X-Wing. "That thing you love? Here's more of it without watering it down!"

Exactly, anyone who disagrees with me is entitled to their own opinion, but I am fed up of being force fed political correctness in the guise of "entertainment".

Dammit, I forgot to mention: Bill Burr (my current favorite comedian) was freakin' brilliant. His "revenge scene" kicked much ass, and I was totally cheering for him.

Here's one that annoys me Steven. Websites who run contests that are only for U.S citizens. That really pi**es me off. 😋 Having said that, happy new year Steven. 👍

We have purchased a plugin that automatically locks a thread after a year of no replies. We came to this length of time after initial testing and feedback from members, so thanks for that! There are several forums that are not included with the autolocking of threads, they are The Media Room, A Collection of Essential Guides, Reviews by Members for Members, Science News & Discussion, Members Metropolis & Soapbox forums (member only forums) Backstage Pass (subscriber only forum) and this Site Announcements forum. Pinned topics also are not auto locked. If you come across a topic that should be unlocked you can report the first post in that topic with a message to our staff why it should be unlocked.

You need to get a router with that you can put a custom firmware on and install YAMON. It's the best for monitoring what uses what data when you have data caps. https://usage-monitoring.com/index.php For example this was my usage yesterday Here is my usage since reinstalling it in early December. I have unlimited data but it's still nice to see how much data devices use

What boggles my mind are the sites that STILL think people want auto play videos. Do they really think people say "WOW, an video that started playing all by itself as I was trying to read the article on the page, it really helped me get engaged in the article." for me personally, it makes me want to never return to their site!

  49. Microsoft has a big 2021 planned for Windows and Surface

Yeah let's just take all supported software, dump it all and create a new thing with 0 software for it and require software developers to recode half of their apps from scratch. Sometimes I really wonder if people actually think about the ideas they have because this has hands down got to be one of the dumbest suggestions I've ever seen in regards to windows. If it ain't broke, don't break it. It's not about the all or nothing approaches like you're suggesting (backwards compatibility vs starting from scratch). There needs to be a balance of transparent backwards compatibility (Rosetta) and a CLEAR direction for new software, but the benifits of removing all that backwards compatibility can't be over looked. Less clunky system, faster, more efficient, less issues with upgrades into the future, easier to overhaul UI, etc. We need Windows 10X to do this.
