  1. New U.S. executive order bans transactions with eight Chinese apps

Not to downplay the problems with China but I wish our government had this same level of furor with companies like Equifax and others that haphazardly treat my sensitive data like an afterthought. We're boarding up the windows while the murderer is calling from within.

having a news feed in the taskbar could be interesting/useful as long as they have the ability to manually add/adjust sources too. I'd like to have it showing Neowin articles personally lol

  5. This is easy to laugh at because it's Microsoft and how things turned out in the long run. But let's not pretend this same attitude has always worked out for Nintendo. The same "we don't need anybody else" attitude is how they screwed up the Sony deal and why Playstation has outsold Nintendo in the living room virtually ever since. Nintendo, as a business, is kind of a crapshoot. As much as I love some of my 3DS/Switch collection, I can't deny they seem to survive solely on name, an obsolete reputation, and a handful of exclusive IP. They certainly aren't riding high quality hardware, brilliant online features, cutting edge gameplay, or competitive pricing. 🤷‍♂️

  6. If you are hearing the PS5 has the performance advantage, you might want to skip relying on those sources in the future. Even giving those sources the benefit of the doubt, they are intentionally misleading people. The Xbox Series only shipped the release and full RDNA2 framework to developers a little over a month ago. This means all the new performance technology in the Xbox Series is not being used in games, or even in the emulation layers. Every developer and tech level engineer or reviewer will also know this, it is not a hidden secret, and it was the cost MS was willing to pay to bundle the console around the newer RNDA2 architecture. Microsoft wanted to base the Xbox Series off the next generation of frameworks and architectures. They worked with AMD to design the technologies of RDNA2 along with newer CPU and SoC optimizations. (This is why the 4xxx mobile processors from AMD are as fast as their desktop counterparts) This means all Xbox Series current releases, including MIcrosoft's own internal emulation and system layers are using the older frameworks that are not designed for RDNA 2.0. This is also why Sony didn't want to mess with RDNA2, as they wanted to optimize their dev tools early on, even if it was leaving a huge chunk of new and revised technologies out of the PS5. So, in games currently shipping, most of them are fully optimized for the PS5, as much as possible for the PS5 architecture. Sony did not want to go down the road of post release optimizations like they did with the PS2, PS3, PS4, etc. This allows them to hit the ground running with essentially the same dev tools from the PS4 being used for the latest PS5 titles. (Which was probably smart for Sony to do, as it worked to get developer's to pump out new generation optimized titles earlier. This is why Sony went with the older RDNA 1.x architecture and frameworks. So if anyone is posting or telling people the PS5 has a performance advantage in ANY game, they are purposely lying or really not paying attention to the development or engineering community. The Xbox Series games are essentially using the Xbox One X generation of dev tools and GPU technologies. (Which is considerably less efficient, slow and less capable than the new architecture and framework.) Also, it is worth repeating, the PS5 is only using RDNA 1.x with Sony's Ray Tracing path added to the shaders. The XBox Series S and X are the ONLY consoles with full AMD RDNA 2+ architecture. (Microsoft worked with AMD to create RDNA2) Now, I'm sure 'fans' won't understand or could care less, as the performance isn't massive, but at around 25-30% even without the RDNA2 optimizations, it should have been enough to entice performance minded games. However, Sony highlighted the SSD BS - which turns out is slower with a higher CPU load on the PS5 than on the XBox Series S or X. Gamers instead think the SSD is more important than it is, and with Sony handing Epic 200 million to showcase Unreal on the PS5, gamers think the PS5 is as good. Sony also coasts on the myth that these consoles are from the same AMD CPU/GPU silicon and are what AMD handed them, and that they are essentially the same. Even tech reviewers like Linus Tech have made similar dismissive comments about the consoles. The truth is there is nearly a full generation of technology differences, and Microsoft not only added performance to the SoC design, they gave those improvements to AMD to use, which today appear in the AMD 4xxxx and 5xxxx processors. So if people think the PS5 has a faster SSD, and the rest is pretty much the same, performance or even visual features just won't matter to buyers. I don't get. Why are You when Microsoft vs XYZ companies are in question resorting from half truths to misinformation to fully blown lies. What is that You hope You will achieve? Every single thing that You just wrote belongs into one of the aforementioned categories. From Sony's chip is RDNA 1.x to Microsoft being the only company in this thread aside from AMD contributing to RDNA2, completely ignoring the ZEN 3 and RDNA 3 features that made it into Sony's APU to Microsoft SSD being faster...etc. As for Microsoft's GDK being late or unoptimized...You said the same thing for the last generation...EDRAM is still not being utilized fully, Microsoft GPU is 30% faster...oh Yes You claimed Direct X and Cloud will destroy PS4. We are all aware how things ended for Xbox One. It never got even close to PS4 performance, so colour me suspicious of the magical GDK as if Sony's devs will be sitting on their asses. Digital Foundry is a fantastic source on both Series X and PS5, You might want to check their direct comparison videos.

I see where this is going. Step back for a minute and look at it. It's a place for them to "dump" their apps which actually support and have useful live tiles. The writings been on the wall for some time but live tiles are done and it's only going to be a matter of time before they're taken out of the start menu in some future update. Having this sort of "news bar" where apps that worked best with the live tile idea all go makes sense, instead of just killing them all flat out. And trying to put them into the action center would just make it a mess. Having a "tile panel" you can turn on and off on the task bar works best IMO.

I must admit I find it scary in this day and age so many people actually don't have any sort of computer at home, just a phone, tablet or games console. When I was in School in the late 90s / early 2000s PC's had become affordable and most people seemed to have one, along with dialup internet. We'd go home and speak to each other on MSN Messenger, play games online like Midtown Madness & Unreal Tournament. I think its fair to say most of us just picked of a lot of general computing knowledge back then from been on them, even people who didn't have much interest in computers could use one reasonably well. Today as someone who works in IT, it seems like the attitude of a lot of people is "i don't do computers" they do everything on a phone / tablet, which certainly in education and the work place is not usually the best tool for the job in my opinion.

If the app doesn't want to use the camera, it just doesn't use it. The shutter serves no purpose other than allowing the user to manually open and close it.

  30. AI and ML are pretty broad terms, I don't see those going away anytime soon as they have uses in many areas. If you're saying they're hyped, I don't think it matters since those who care enough to dig into them are developers anyways. AI and ML as far as gaming goes are already showing what they can do with DLSS 2.0 for example. And if a game developer could tap into ML more for their games who knows what it could mean as far as how we interact with future NPCs in games going forward. This all comes down to the ability of your hardware though.

I suspect sooner or later, their luck could run out where they end up with two misses on the trot and fold like Sega did, after all, Nintendo is much smaller than Microsoft and Sony are.

  35. The money is always good , but course is not what will make a company stand out or not , and it's clear some resources will be spent without any profit or even with projects seeing the light of the day. Meaning as usual some public money will be wasted. But what stands out for me in this news is the amount! What the f#k are 178 million when we see they injecting Billions not millions in air companies , bank institutions and many other that we even have no knowledge of. This is just ###### , if they want to invest , invest hard , and create a real control commission to check for the funds , or even send funds in small amounts as a real investor and along the always check for the evolution of projects and ROI to be sure is the right investment or not. If EU wants to blindly give money they can just do what they are doing for those giants attached to the state of each country and start printing more money it's as easy as this. The economy is already f$#d up anyway. 👍

  36. Sounds good, but doesn't that go against the whole government/eu helping individual companies out mantra they've been blurting for a long time? Even going as far as to insist the UK government cannot do it if it wants to trade with the EU? Surely if you're going to set rules, you should actually stick by those rules...

Some schools might require some form of submission of work, however i can only talk from my sons perspective. He is 8 and doing remote learning. He uses Google classroom and has a mix of reading using some ebooks online which are viewable on phones as well as laptops etc. but a majority of the work is pen and paper, with him putting it up to the screen for the teacher to see... Not ideal, but i guess it works? My son is lucky though... We purchased a desk just before lockdown as we could see it coming. I also have a lot of spare decent laptops, so set one up with restrictions for him. He now has his own office and feels all grown up. He keeps saying he feels like he is me working from home . He's now on a "15 minute break" and talking to his class mates online. On topic however - whilst its commendable what 3 have done, im not really sure it will get very far as without good signal and speed, i dont think it would cope with the video sessions?

Because they're massively exploited. Work 100 hours a week, aren't paid hourly but earn a "salary" (usually), are always on call and never get a moment to breathe. Almost no software engineers work more than 50 hours a week. I know a lot of software engineers, almost all of them work more than 50 hours a week. In fact 50 hours a week sounds lovely.... 46. I believed that Xbox will start off this generation better, due to advertised power superiority over PS5, than the last one which was very close to sales numbers of PS4 and seeing Xbox is doing much worse this time around surprised me, it surprised me even more seeing PS5 has the performance edge over the Series X. I guess the demand for PS5 could have brought PS4's premature death.

  47. Alphabet workers announce the formation of a union

If you objectively understood how inaccurate and out of deeper contextual understanding the stuff you are repeating is, you would surely be embarrassed. The things you highlight have not even been major union issues in most of the world since the 1980s, yet you are blaming it for low cost labor usage spikes in the last decade or two, when Unions have been declining and almost non-existent in the SAME TECHNOLOGY sectors work has moved to China. So there was virtually NO union technical manufacturing in the same timeframe work moved to China, but yet you and other conservative goofs like to say that is the reason why. How? Unions that didn't exist could NOT HAVE caused the shift to overseas manufacturing. These are boogey man stories for sad and stupid capitalist absolutists. Everyone that thinks the OP comment makes sense, it is time to read a REAL book and not Hannity level talking point notes. Truly encouraging you to look up what you are saying, it really is not accurate and silly in context.

  48. Is the entry-level Kobo Nia e-reader worth your money?

The Kobo Nia is priced similar to the Kindle Basic, both of which have very identical specs. The two main differences would be that the Kindle is a tad bit faster while the Kobo supports far more formats (Kindle can't even open up ePub which is just ridiculous in my opinion). The Kobo Nia is $100 while the Kindle Basic comes in two versions, an ad-free version for $110 and one with ads for $90. My personal preference is the Nia as I read a lot, including comics and graphic novels. I've downloaded and collected a huge library of ebooks over the last 10 years and all of it is in my computer with a back up in my external hard drive. Almost all of them are ePubs while the comics are either CBZ or CBR formats. I don't have time to convert, optimize and transfer every single ebook.

  49. More like Apple was being an a##hat. Sure? It is still a stupid name that promotes "speed" use but I guess just another day in our drug obsessed culture. It's a legal prescription drug and the name doesn't promote any illegal activity. If you're looking at legal prescription drug names and thinking of illegal street drugs, that's your problem. And, yes, this is a drug obsessed culture. But not in the way you think. More like obsessed with criminalizing things that have multiple medicinal uses and dehumanizing people who use them. Yes, it's a regulated drug. LOL Of course it's promotes the use of amphetamine as the developer obvious thinks lot of it. We do in fact have a drug obsessed culture. and you can't really argue otherwise. I see scores of co-workers, friends, and other random people come in contact that have drug issues. I am not even taking about illegal drugs. Most people need to start the day pumping themselves with caffeine or something stronger then after work need alcohol to take the edge off and/or a sleeping aid to go to sleep. Next day, repeat. It's a cycle and neither are actually needed but it is an addiction. Add pain killers and illegal drugs... I understand we have some ######ed up laws but we are obsessed with taking pills for everything these days. It kills me I see school age kids going to school with a cup of Starbucks in their hand. When I was that age it was unheard to know anyone drinking coffee. The marketing guys with the energy drinks are geniuses. They have actually convinced young people they need "energy" all the time. Energy was the one thing I don't remember needing when young. I can just walk down the street and just see people high, drunk, or in a zombie like state left and right. It's freaking ridiculous... ??? You are reading so much more into this than what is there.
