This is lovely. They're probably gonna go the way of 4chan. In any case, breaking the radicalization pipeline for the average internet user is good. It's too easy for gullible (average) people to get caught up in a web (no pun intended, but one works) of disinformation leading to estrangement from reality. Parler may seem like a free platform to some but only people with a specific viewpoint have decided to join it, so it is an echo chamber. Further, it moderates content, just not a specific kind that those people post.9 points -

"war on free speech" LMAO... No such war exists. It's more accurately a war on HATE speech, and those who spread it. Google, Apple etc are private companies, and decides what is allowed on their platforms and what isn't. Simple as that. When a bakery refuses service to a gay couple wanting to get married, Conservatives cheer them on. When Google refuses service to companies like Parler, suddenly it's undemocratic.8 points -

Parler, it’s really simple. Follow the rules of these companies, and you won’t have issues. I’m not sure why some folks don’t understand this. You can have your free speech, to an extent (again, read up on what this means), when you are not reliant on a third party.7 points -

Ahh 4chan, that was the name of the "social media" platform I was thinking of!! The concern of any social media platform these days are that they are all echo chambers. News sites are also really bad, depending on how strong their bias is. Disinformation is too easily looped back on itself. I have a friend here in Aus who is not a Trump fan by any means, but he claimed something that just wasn't true. I asked him where he heard that from, and his reply was "my pastor told me". So I asked where his pastor had heard that. "They watched a video". He's a relatively smart guy, but the issue with someone you trust telling you anything, is that you are inclined to believe them. The same applies for Trump as POTUS, though on a much broader scale (even internationally). People trust him, and took him on his word. Turns out, all he was doing was reading things that he wanted to, the biggest echo chamber of all, and he "legitimised" what was previously written off as loony, and to his supporters, it became fact. And that is irrespective of if it was true or not.. Glad to see the end of him.6 points -

Ignorance on full display. Twitter continues to host terrorists and their tweets, pedophila, explicit nudity, the list continues. This has nothing to do with "unable to moderate" becuase Twitter ONLY moderates one group while the far left wing (redacted, see I can't even speak my opinion here without CCP censorship) are free to post everything "against the TOS" just as the right does. On the upside, the internet will split, we're more divided than ever thanks to big tech and this will continue to fuel the inventible. Also, Apple is responsible for EVERYTHING that happens on their phones. Why aren't they moderating their phones? Terrorists use them? Murderers, etc. Think about that. One rule for thee, but not for me. Oh .. it doesn't matter. This audience here is full support of a communist takeover. Social Credit Score, and no hot water or electricity because you didn't have the correct opinion. Your phone company has just blacklisted you because you said something they don't like. Oh you're not allowed to watch that channel anymore. etc.. We're on our way without a MASSIVE course correction.5 points -

They are indeed trying to do an "armed protest" on the 19th. It's hard to tell what's self aggrandisement, what's delusion, and what's reality with these people but some said the 6th was only the beginning. I don't think any attempted attack on the 19th will be as big and hopefully security will be more prepared. Now it's no longer theoretical.5 points -

What is "hate speech"? Some new religious dogma of the new non-Abrahamic religion? This sounds nothing more like a handy label for marking people which you don't like but is meaningless, threats are illegal, edgy statements aren't. If you have to ask to have it explained, I don't think there is a definition of hate speech that exists that you would except let alone understand. But here it is: "Hate speech is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as "public speech that expresses hate or encourages violence towards a person or group based on something such as race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation". Hate speech is "usually thought to include communications of animosity or disparagement of an individual or a group on account of a group characteristic such as race, colour, national origin, sex, disability, religion, or sexual orientation". I suspect you'll denounce Cambridge next so it makes my point.4 points -

I really like that you specify "to an extent" because even free speech in a governmental context has limitations. There are absolutely things you can say that the government can persecute you for in all parts of the world, including the USA. It's super-precedent and was voted on, 9-0. Now I don't necessarily agree that each instance of the government persecuting people for speech has been fair, but that is the reality, and that is the law that's upheld by courts. Many Americans live in a delusional fantasy that US courts do or have ever recognized "natural rights" (regardless of the beliefs of the framers). It's a neoliberal lie told by corporations so people feel like they have some semblance of control (over the government, which they don't, instead of trying to get any over the economy, which they don't either under a neoliberal model). If you declare the current US state as illegitimate and try to overthrow it the way the founding fathers did using the same arguments they used to justify such an act, you'll make no more than a fool out of yourself and land in prison for the rest of your life. Bolded the relevant bit here: If you run around a crowded airport and shout "There's a bomb!!!" when there is none, is that free speech? Absolutely not. Freedom of speech allows you to say what you want, it doesn't shield you from potential repercussions of that speech.4 points -

Twitter is used for a lot of good things... For every good thing twitter is used for there are 10 bad things it is used for. Twitter is the sewer of the Internet. I am so glad I have NEVER had an account. Before Trump started using it back in 2016 Twitter tried to sell the company. Facebook, Google, Microsoft even Disney all passed on it because it was so toxic. It was predicted they would run out of money because of their burn rate. Then Trump used to get around the media and Twitter's value went way up. I just heard yesterday that something like 40% of Twitter traffic went away by banning Trump. Oh the irony. Twitter is pure trash and they let all kinds of horrible stuff on that site, including straight up terrorism. The fact that Apple allows the Twitter app and wants to block this other app, that I have never heard of, because conservatives use it, stinks really, really bad. Any and all talks of government regulation against big tech should absolutely include Apple.4 points -

Moreover, you can't handle it yet without banning, censorship etc. I mean this place has a record of "infractions" because I said something, a word that someone didn't like. Their emotional state is somehow my responsibility. Once they come for you, then you're going to have that conversation whether you want to or not. Until, you all can just continue agreeing with each other and make less than zero progress. There is nothing wrong with discussion, when it is sane. Your views are founded on...well who knows. The biggest mistake you've made here is "Google, Apple etc" are not private companies, the bakery you go on to mention....private company Google, Apple, ect are publicly traded companies. The point not to overlook is that free speech is protect from Gov intrusion on your voice. That still means that even publically traded companies still fall into the private aspect as they still maintain control over their services and as such, users, such as Parler, have to abide by the rules of the services they are choosing to use.3 points -

mudslag and one other reacted to derpityderp for a topic
Yup. And after supporting actually harmful deregulation of energy companies and banks, conservatives also start suddenly using leftist talking points like saying corporations can get too powerful and that the government must intervene and regulate. Now they can flip this around and say, "How come the baker must serve the gay couple but Amazon can refuse service to Parler?" And the answer is simple: it's apples to oranges. The case of the gay couple deals with Civil Rights - the ability to be treated fairly on the basis of belonging to a certain group that is protected by some legislation. The Civil Rights Act federally has protections on the basis of sex and will soon include sexual orientation once the Equality Act passes (likely with the incoming gov). Fortunately, "Insurrectionists posting violent threats" is not a protected class. The case of Amazon terminating Parler's service is a case of civil liberties, a related but distinct concept. As a private enterprise, they have the liberty to serve who they wish to. The baker generally reserves the same civil liberty, but the civil right of someone based on belonging to a protected class takes precedence. This means you can refuse someone service for being violent and unruly (not protected classes). You cannot refuse someone service for being gay, a woman, Black, white, disabled, etc. (protected classes)2 points -

Oh well, Parler have chosen to allow this to happen. This has been discussed at length in a couple of articles on the front page including the Google removing Parler article. In a nutshell, First Amendment does not apply with a private company in this case. Apple set the rules on their platform. Parler refused to comply with Apple's rules. Parler was removed. I have no doubt if Parler clean up their act both Apple and Google will allow them back on to their platforms.2 points -

Don't much care. I dont use Twitter or Parlor and think services like this are a crap way to inform people of what is going on. Lots of people are lazy and look to social media to decide on who to follow, vote for, or believe in a lot of cases. This is their sole news source. Whoever is trending, or popular/most liked posts. Shows how weak minded some can be to take what social media says and run with it without actually looking in to it further. Anyway, I wonder how long it will take Twitter to ban other hate mongers, like Farrakhan, from their platform as well. His comments towards Jews are appalling to say the least and has posted a lot of hate on Twitter before. And there are other accounts on Twitter calling for attacks against the US, and others, that appear to be still there. Have a friend on FB that I am about to block due to the fact that everyday she spews crap about the elections and conspiracy crap as well. Also, getting in to arguments with people that have done nothing but help her in the past. She has gone over the deep end and social media has skewed her mind.2 points -

Suggesting using Skype to people during Covid has just resulted in a chorus of memory-induced grumbles, bug encounteres and people giving up because it doesn't work.
