  1. Suddenly, all these social media giants begin to take over the information stream, they get to pick whats good and whats wrong and thats scary.

  4. Facebook in general is scary but this would be at the bottom of the list of why. The problem I see is who decides what is authoritative or not? Will it be renowned historians, or Facebook contractors? Denying a fact based on opinion is one thing. But, at what point will people be directed toward what Facebook wants them to see and nothing else?

  5. Facebook has apologised for naughty word blocking blunder

Did you somehow miss the memo on everyone being offended at everything in these times of participation trophies and having to explain throwaway comments you put online ten years ago as a joke? (resulting in things like GDPR and CCNA et al).

  7. Facebook will now show 'authoritative' sources for searches relating to Holocaust

Facebook in general is scary but this would be at the bottom of the list of why.

  8. Ahhh, I’m so ambivalent about this! On the one hand, Holocaust denial is a diabolical thing, as is any form of anti-semitism. Facebook seems to have found a good balance here between providing proper information while not blocking other sources outright. On the other hand, I am increasingly concerned about moves made by private companies to determine what information is made available. The Holocaust should not be a particularly controversial topic but others are less clear cut. I hope we are not in a slow crawl to a place where Facebook, Google and others decide what is “true” and censors all other opinions. That is not what is happening here but we must be cautious not to sleepwalk into that situation in future. Again, I appreciate that this is not what is happening in this particular case, but blocking information outright, even false information, can lead to enclaves of people who never hear opposing points of view - putting them in an echo chamber of their own opinion - and that can be dangerous. I would like to see Big Tech, schools and government work together to provide everybody, particularly children, with the skills and tools needed to assess the validity of information for themselves. In the modern age of social media and highly politicised digital media, being able to separate fact from opinion and spotting bias is going to become ever more important. Over time, I believe this will be a much more effective tool against extremism than censorship while also maintaining the concept of free speech which many modern societies are founded upon.

  9. Apple earnings: $111.4B with well over half in iPhone sales

I have been considering a switch to an iPhone for a little while but every time I see a comment from you it kills the urge.

  10. How on Earth is this anti-competitive? There's little demand, and they restrict availability even further. You can only be anti-competitive if you dominate the market. This thing is... pretty much the exact opposite of that.

  11. Since it's not going to be sold to consumers what does it matter if it's limited though? The oems will put these in pre-built business systems and those are going to be using 9th and 10th gen chips anyways. No ones out there making older Intel systems for sale.

  13. I think there are two separate issues here. Posting your opinion about something is fine. Posting information that is opposed to fact and presenting it as if it is the truth is different. Imagine if science or geography books in school presented information from the correct standpoint that the Earth is spherical in shape like all other planets, then the next chapter presented information based on the false belief that the Earth is flat. That's ridiculous right? Because normal humans understand that the Earth is round, spherical. If a group of idiots wants to believe something stupid like the Holocaust didn't happen or the Earth is flat, let them. But not every social media platform is automatically obliged to let them state their opinions as if they are the truth on its platform.

  16. Well, this is actually cheaper than getting all the equipment necessary to stream video on the go straight from a dslr. Screen, batteries, video encoder and modem for the camera would amount to 2-3k. And with this you get all that in a phone with some new 5G tech. Still absolutely not worth it imo but there's the explanation if anyone cares.

  19. It's not... It only works with newer CPUs because it's only comes with new systems and it's not being sold separately. The no AMD should be self-explanatory.

  21. I am happy Apple is playing the privacy card. The fact that some companies are so scared that users get a tracking prompt or see privacy labels for their apps is very amusing. The fact that they are all so scared tells me there is something going on... Google hasn’t updated any of their apps since the privacy labels went in effect and are mandatory since december 7th. That is the longest period without app updates ever.

  23. None of these platforms will ever affect my way of thinking. Now, if they want to stop idiots from spreading stupid information as fact on their sites which they pay for, then so be it. I don't think you have a firm grasp of how government runs if you think these businesses are part of some Marxist propaganda takeover. YOU agree to their terms willingly when you sign up for services on these sites. No one ever forces you to use them, and they don't control what you think. They could all disappear tomorrow, and 2 things would still remain: 1) the government, and 2) people with dumb ideas about reality.

  36. Just as planned. Many years ago when competition for the market still exist I wondering: why these services free and unprofitable, how they hope to cover losses? Here's how. Information monopoly gives powerful tools to decide what is right and what is wrong, who will be a wealthy person and who unemployed erased from anywhere. I don't think that was an evil plan from the start but power drives you crazy like the One Ring. And everything will be crazier and crazier as long as this power remains unlimited.

I would always suggest not using Facebook.

  42. medium will bomb. it'll be a 75% average. Are you talking metacritic score or something? If so, 75 doesn't fall into the bombing range. 75 is, imo, a bomb. it's a game that's really not worth playing. if it aint 90+ it aint worth it. So by your logic, stuff like Ghost of Tsushima & DOOM Eternal are not worth playing? Must suck to have such a limited game variety to play then. Hope Last of Us 2, Animal Crossing and Persona 5 satisfied all your gaming needs last year

  47. Microsoft's Surface Laptop 4 is reportedly coming in April

If they start doing this + refreshes more often then that's good. One of the issues MS has with the Surface line as of late is that they're behind on the newest hardware when they release a new version. If doing these smaller updates where you can upgrade the insides without having to worry about changing the overall design helps put a end to that then great.

  50. Disable the insert key in Windows permanently

This thing drives me nuts when I am editing a post or using our CMS on Neowin. I found the solution here https://superuser.com/questions/31794/windows-insert-key-anti-functionality-accidentally-triggers-how-to-stop-it-perm for clarity, this for when the cursor starts replacing every character you have your cursor on rather than putting it in front of a character. Go to Start → Run → regedit Go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout Right-click on the right half of the screen and choose New → Binary Value Name the new value Scancode Map Enter 000000000000000002000000000052E000000000 Close regedit Reboot. Optional: you can take the Insert key off of your keyboard when done. Or do as I did and save the following as disable_insert_key.reg and merge (as an Administrator) into registry. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout] "Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,52,e0,00,00,00,00 Reboot + profit.
