Just my personal opinion and probably isn't applicable to all industries, but it usually isn't a good idea to show desperation to a potential employer. It leaves the door open to them lowballing you on a job offer, knowing that you really want the role. If they want to offer you a job, you'll obviously find out, sending emails isn't going to change anything3 points -

Most of these Chinese devices are cheap for a reason. They run a old, generic version of Android, not Android TV. In addition they fail SafteyNet and don't support for DRM for playing HD Netflix / other streaming services, even if you side load them. Your paying for the DRM, Google Certification or features like Dolby Atmos Audio with the more expensive ones. Granted some do have custom rom support which can make them useful in certain situations, devices with an Amlogic S905W chipset can be flashed with a custom rom + Magisk so they pass SafteyNet. These are popular in the Pokemon Go maps community as they can be purchased for £15-20, run the game and can be connected to a central server allowing them to produce live maps of a local area for the game. If you want something cheap to use a browser / office apps on i'd argue something like a Raspberry Pi is a far better investment.3 points -
Facebook saw a drop in hate speech prevalence during Q4 2020
Snake89 and 2 others reacted to restroom for a topic
Translated - they saw a drop in what they constitute to be hate speech, not necessarily actual hate speech. I'm not a political person and nor am I "left or right" wing. I see benefits from the ideas on both sides of the spectrum. However the online social media companies seem to have a very narrow view of what they believe is and is not hate speech, particularly dependent on the political views of those who run the platforms. It frustrates me that one view is stifled over another as this is what makes people become more extreme and frustrated, leading to worse problems later on when those people end up going underground and less monitoring able to be done on them by the authorities if needed.3 points -

You have a valid point but websites/platforms leaning more towards one side over the other is nothing new on the internet. It's actually the norm, this is only becoming a "issue" now because of the latest high profile bans FB/Twitter etc have done. But take any site, on any topic that draws a fanbase of any kind, and that's what you get. Neowin for example has more people who look positively and favor MS over the competition. A few clicks and you'll find a site that favors Apple more than anyone, a few more clicks and you'll find a site that favors Linux above all else. And that's just tech, but pick any broad reaching topic/interest out there from tech to sports to politics to w/e, the same applies. While the right is crying that they're getting unfairly banned on these platforms compared to the left, I think if we actually sat down and looked at the raw numbers the split, as far as right vs left, goes, is probably pretty close. The thing is when a left leaning crazy liberal gets banned, it doesn't make the news. When a high profiled crazy right wing nut gets banned it makes waves. At the end of the day though that's one person from both sides, though the impact overall is less. What should happen, and I think this would put the whole thing to rest, is if they tweaked Section 230 censorship part to something more specific. As it stands it's just a blanket ability to ban/moderate users content in good faith. It doesn't state any specifics, so any site can have it's own unique criteria. Maybe we should clearly define hate speech? Would that make it better? I'm not 100% sure at this point.2 points -

I dunno every Moto phone I've had (E5 and X4 iirc) has just worked, but the E5 got very few updates. that's the main issue with Moto is they don't update their devices for very long at all. They also lock their bootloader down way hard so it's harder to root for those that like that among a few other nuances. I have that problem with Android in general. I don't really want to keep my iPhone anymore as I have two phones and its the easiest to offload, but it does work better and isn't likely to lose support for a long time so I guess that isn't happening.1 point -

ZakO reacted to Astra.Xtreme for a topic
If either "side" can't converse without resorting to racist, sexist and religious abuse, then I wouldn't want them on my platform either. I'd like to take a different angle on that. It's far too often that a discussion descends to somebody pulling the race, sex, religion, etc. card. You can't even point to facts on a certain demographic without somebody getting triggered and calling you a bigot. Want to have a political discussion with somebody different than you? It'll quickly turn personal and somebody magically becomes a racist. That's desensitized the actual discrimination issues that still exist. People are too used to the ____-card being used as a weak retaliation rather than being valid.1 point -

Interview Question opinion wanted
Bruinator reacted to Nick H. for a topic
I don't think I have ever sent a thank you email, or a followup to see if they have made a decision. I've thanked them for their time before leaving the interview and left it at that, figuring that there is nothing else that I can do to sway their decision. That's not to say it's a bad thing to send the emails, just that I haven't done it. The only time I would consider sending such an email is if I had another offer but I would prefer the first position. I may write a brief email informing them that I had received an offer, but that if they were still considering me for the position I would prefer to work for them. I'm not being pushy, just updating them on my situation.1 point -

Shooters generally don't have these kinds of features since they are trying to make action sequences, not sandboxes. It's an interesting path to take for Halo. Agree. Metro by T-Mobile is selling the Motorola One 5G Ace for $20
Brandon H reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
I have to agree, and it is odd. In the 'droid' era, Motorola had a strong start, even if there were some quality issues with screens on the first and second generation. Google's meddling also didn't help. Motorola also made some of the best bluetooth headsets for a long time - they still do if you can find them. LG is odd, cause they make really good technology when pushed, and oddly, providing other OEMs better screens than they used in their own brands. The Lumia 950 and XL had the top screens of 2015, while LG's own model didn't get close to matching them until somewhere around 2018. Makes no sense. I cycle through a lot of devices and crap, trying to find anything that I can 'stand'. I keep going back to Samsung for features. However, what is surprising is some of the generic-ish brands are good enough, it isn't like any device is going to fix the problems with Android, even though Samsung and a couple of other brand at least try.1 point -

Question about PoE
Brandon H reacted to +BudMan for a topic
Well how were you going to get their video? If they were wifi camera's you would need power. Most camera's locations are not really near power outlets.. While there are some battery options, And even solar panels to charge battery external camera's etc. Poe is by far the simplest and best solution for cameras - you have a great stable fast connection while also providing power for the device. You also have the ease of simple way to remove power for a reboot of the device. And normally if using a switch for poe a way to monitor their power consumption. Keep in mind there are multiple poe standards, so make sure whatever switch your going to use works with what your camera needs be it 802.3af, at, bt (type 3 or 4) you may also see these as poe, poe+, poe++ There are also passive type camera's at 24 or 48v So you need to make sure the switch and camera are compatible and the switch can provide the amount of watts you will need, especially if you plan on connecting multiple cameras From a networking point of view keep in mind that downstreaming a poe switch off your core switch can lead to bandwidth constraints where you have multiple cameras having to share the 1 gig uplink from the poe switch to your network. This is where injectors can be handy.. When there is only a couple of devices its normally easier and cheaper to just use injectors.. Vs going with a poe switch1 point -

Robbing them by charging the same as other platforms like Nintendo or Sony? Also, are they really gonna take those profits back to the employees that worked on the game? If so great, but something tells me that's not what's gonna happen at all. Let's be realistic here at least... Just a quick reminder that Gabe Newell is a literal, actual $10-billionaire, and he made almost all of that money from taking a personal cut of every Steam purchase. Valve is a private company -- for the most part, that 30% cut doesn't go anywhere other than his personal fortune. How much money does one man need? Why even -slightly- stick up for his capability to make even more money off of the rest of us?1 point -

Tuskd reacted to George P for a topic
Thats seems to be a strange business practice if true. If you need companies to use Azure, give them deep discounts, not buy them up. You want access to all the user data that comes with it, they can use Azure but you don't have access to it. Buying social media companies gives you all that data to. And also all the content on it, like it says in the article, using the pictures in office for example. My point was that MS would get the benefits but can still be hands off like with Github and LinkedIn.1 point -
