Apple is tightening the noose around apps with 'irrationally high prices'
mip and 5 others reacted to Philippe Majerus for a topic
Translation: "We are charging irrationally high price for our devices, so to compensate and make our customers believe their device investment was worth it, we are requesting that you make your apps cheaper." Doesn't Apple believe customers can choose whether these apps provide the value they are asking for or not? Aren't they the ones claiming the free market regulates itself and regulations would harm the ecosystem when they are the ones being investigated?6 points -

iPhone pricing is pretty competitive with Android devices at various price ranges. They also come with 5+ years of software updates. Apple is helping their consumers from getting ripped off by greedy developers. They can use this money that they save to purchase more Apple subscription services instead. A win-win for both consumers and Apple.4 points -

Wasn't there an app at one point that was called something like the Millionaire app? It did nothing and came with a price tag of $9999 or something, and it's only purpose was to show your friends that you could afford it? Maybe I've made that up. The only thing I could find from a quick search was the iVIP Black app at $999.2 points -

Interview Question opinion wanted

However, globally many are. I’m seeing nothing that says this is in the US and since this is a “global pandemic” I’ve not shown any national bias. The point I am making is: it is utterly fair to ask if an initial interview could be remotely handled given the current situation. We don’t know enough about any of the situations to make the risk assessment for Bruinator, and someone actively denying that there’s any issue based upon ridiculous arguments is just plain wrong.1 point -

Will I get a significant improvement in speed if I upgrade my PC?
Jim K reacted to DaDude for a topic
Yeah, plus I think it's time to buy a new PC anyway. For some reason, the fan on my computer tower makes a loud noise when I first turn on my computer. It only makes that loud noise when I first turn on and goes away after five minutes. I thought it was just dust, but I tried to spray it with one of those air compressed dusters and still makes that noise. So probably a sign that the fan is starting to fail.1 point -

UK's Supreme Court says Uber drivers are employees
RCTRCT reacted to boo_star for a topic
To be fair it has been abundantly clear for years that these "self-employed" workers were anything but. HMRC has had a basic "Are you self-employed" test for years on their site that Uber would have fallen foul of. It predates Brexit by a long-shot as I remember looking at it when I started doing this "not self-employed self-employed" work over a decade ago.1 point -

I don't know if this is a good thing or not. I drove for Uber as a side gig a few years ago. It was easy to start driving, and easy to quit. I drove whenever I wanted, for however long or short I wanted. I guess that's the pros of the current system. I can't help but wonder if forcing them to make drivers employees will spell the end of drivers like me that just needed a bit of extra money without the hassle a traditional part time job.1 point -

I was thinking about getting myself a Surface Duo when available in Europe. But I've changed my mind when I saw it's 1550€ in Germany. Surface X is $1000 in US and 920€ in Germany - just $120 more - it's ok, because it includes taxes. Surface Pro 7 is $750 in US and 745€ in Germany - just $150 more - still ok, we are used to this in Europe. Surface Duo started at $1400 in US, but it's 1550€ in Germany - it's $480 more - this is ridiculous!1 point -

Texas weather: Deaths mount as winter storm leaves millions without power
+hedleigh reacted to Jumping Jacinta for a topic
When someone takes on the responsibility of representing their constituents they also take on a level of expectations with it. That includes not abandoning your post or cut and run as if often used when things turn bad. Also, whether we like it or not the families are along for the ride as well. Sorry FFM but I can't cut Cruz any slack at all on this. He gave his own constituents the middle finger and effectively abandoned them. There is no excuse for what he has done. He won't resign as Republicans rarely do that nor will he lose his next election but he deserves a metaphorical black eye delivered right between the eyes from those who gave him their vote.1 point -

Isn't the problem that it looked like he was running off with his family rather than staying to help? I don't think anyone would have blamed him for moving his family out of the area, but he didn't mention what he was up to until he returned. Anyone with half a brain would have realised how that would look and would have announced their plan was just for their family before the media reported that he was boarding a plane. But maybe I'm expecting too much from Cruz when I expect him to have at least half a brain.1 point -

Emn1ty reacted to FloatingFatMan for a topic
I've been thinking about this over the last hour or so, and a thought occurs to me. As much as I'm loathe in any way to defend Cruz, who is a complete piece of sh**... I have to ask, if any of you were in Texas right now, and had the means to take your family somewhere warmer and safer, wouldn't you immediately do so? Are we truly castigating someone for doing something we all would have done in his place? I said earlier people would remember what he did when it comes to re-election, and I stand by that. But I cannot in good conscience truly blame the man for removing his family from a bad situation. It just would have been better if he'd SENT them and remained to help sorting out the problems, as a public servant is supposed to do.1 point -
Bill Gates says there needs to be an Elon Musk in every sector
Billus reacted to naap51stang for a topic
I read somewhere, someone asked Bill how he justifies his "carbon footprint" with all the private jet flying he does. He says he "offsets it". LOL, see, THIS will be how it works. The 99% will have to curtail THEIR so called carbon footprint, while the 1% will continue to live and travel however they want. All of this global warming is a bunch of crap! Just a few weeks ago, another "discovered" abandoned village was found in the Norway area when the "global warming" caused the ice to melt, revealing the settlement, which dated back hundreds of thousands of years ago. Now, that begs the question. If there were a village that supported people living there, how was it SO WARM then, without all of the industrialization hundreds of thousands of years ago? Why was the planet WARMER then, than now? Then answer is that "star" around 90 million miles away.1 point -
