Rush Limbaugh, conservative talk radio pioneer, dead at 70
Barney T. and 2 others reacted to Emn1ty for a topic
Listened to him for a while cause he happened to be on AM radio on my way into work. He was actually the reason I would change the channel after a year or so of his dogmatic talk. I think he definitely pushed me away from deep conservatism, lots of comments that just seemed way out of left field and intentionally disrespectful of different groups. Not glad he's dead, but honestly... not gonna miss him either.3 points -

iPhone pricing is pretty competitive with Android devices at various price ranges. They also come with 5+ years of software updates. Apple is helping their consumers from getting ripped off by greedy developers. They can use this money that they save to purchase more Apple subscription services instead. A win-win for both consumers and Apple.3 points -

Translation: "We are charging irrationally high price for our devices, so to compensate and make our customers believe their device investment was worth it, we are requesting that you make your apps cheaper." Doesn't Apple believe customers can choose whether these apps provide the value they are asking for or not? Aren't they the ones claiming the free market regulates itself and regulations would harm the ecosystem when they are the ones being investigated?3 points -

Sure especially when there's no one to police Apple's irrational high prices of hardware, it's all fair game. Subjective and irrelevant. I don't care if you use iOS, Android, Windows, Linux, whatever... subscription pricing has long since been predatory in nature. Below are just a few ways I've seen this done, extending well beyond distribution platforms. Subscriptions continuing after price hikes Free trials that require CC to hopefully "get you" once the trial is up Companies that try to make it difficult to unsubscribe -- I had a gym that required you to write a letter to corporate to cancel your membership; SiriusXM also makes it painfully difficult to unsubscribe requiring calls to support (at least when I did it) Companies adding "fees" that are malicious in nature, as seen in the link below: https://www.reddit.com/r/assho...arges_you_if_you_dont_play/ Let's at least get on the same page here...2 points -

UK's Supreme Court says Uber drivers are employees
+hedleigh reacted to boo_star for a topic
They get sick pay and holiday pay as employees. You realize sick and holiday pay comes from somewhere right? either drivers get less pay, or the fare prices go up. Most probably, the former than latter because of competition. Also, remember if they are full time employee (sick and holiday pay implied that) they lose all the flexibility for work don't you think? Sick pay would come from the employer's national insurance contributions that they are required to pay by law, it doesn't come out of anyone wages. Neither does holiday pay for that matter. There are minimum wage laws too you know. I'm not making an argument against Uber here, just pointing out that your rather flippant comment making out that drivers won't get anything from this by being employees is incorrect. Although I do find it utterly bizarre that people think that it's fine for companies to break the law, as long as it gets them a cheaper product. I have a funny feeling they wouldn't feel that way if it was their employer doing it though... And since you've brought it up, are you really trying to suggest that fares going up, so that employees are given the minimum level of compensation the law requires, is a bad thing?1 point -

You can earn these Destiny 2: Trials of Osiris rewards from February 19 to 23
Steven P. reacted to Asher Madan for a topic
Every week, Destiny 2 hosts a Trials of Osiris event where teams of three compete for access to The Lighthouse. The Lighthouse promises Pinnacle rewards that boost you closer to the current Power Level cap. The player vs. player competition also grants other items if you get three, five, or seven wins. However, you'll have to get seven wins in a row, without a loss, if you want to grab the Pinnacle gear from The Lighthouse. You can take a look at the Trials of Osiris rewards from February 19 to 23 below. Three wins: Astral Horizon legendary shotgun Five wins: Sola's Scar legendary sword Seven wins: Pyrrhic Ascent legendary gauntlets Flawless: Igneous Hammer legendary hand cannon Trials of Osiris starts at 12 PM EST on Friday and lasts until 12 PM EST on Tuesday. You can use the Passage of Mercy from Saint-14 because it forgives one loss if you're aiming for Flawless rewards. Keep in mind that if you manage to get seven wins in a row, you'll have to manually select The Lighthouse location displayed in the Crucible menu to obtain the Pinnacle reward. This involves jumping across a few platforms and opening the chest where Saint-14 and Osiris are standing.1 point -

dead.cell reacted to devHead for a topic
This makes sense somewhat; my daughter has downloaded some games or pretty useless apps that have a 3 day trial then you can pay $6.99 a week for it afterwards. That's a little insane. Do apps like that exist on Android's platform? I think many times it's just developers cashing in on the general cluelessness of iOS device owners. Does this mean that Apple is going to lower the cost of their $999 monitor stands? Probably not.1 point -
Will I get a significant improvement in speed if I upgrade my PC?
Sikh reacted to +Biscuits Brown for a topic
That new computer will come with Windows installed, that's it. If all you use is Microsoft Edge browser I guess you'd be all set. If you use an installed version of Office you will need to reinstall it. Any other apps you use, you need to reinstall them then move all your personal data over. from the old HDD in the old computer (unless you maintain current backups of your data someplace other than the old computer...) I guess the only real sticking point would be getting a Windows license if you were to replace the HDD with and SSD. Your current license is likely an OEM license that's tied to the original Dell PC and you may not be able to easily reactivate on the new SSD. For the record, I'm looking at a Win 10 machine running an old i5 3570k (that's not overclocked) with 8Gb ram that has a small 256Gb SSD for the OS that runs as a small file server. It also browses the web and before being repurposed, it ran Office 2016 just fine. That machine is about on par with your system and runs your use cases very well. As everyone has said, do not spend the 900 bucks on a new system. Maybe get some help from a friend to swap that HDD with an SSD. That's really all you need - and you may even be able to clone the old drive to the new one (although I always opt for a fresh install). My wife learned how to build a PC and install Windows/Office so I have no doubt you can as well. Its not rocket science.1 point -
Google announces Android 12, releasing the first developer preview
+Warwagon reacted to adrynalyne for a topic
the sad thing is it is mostly the fault of the cell carriers; the carriers wanted control and google gave in and now they can't get out of that. Apple held firm that they would be fully in control of their own updates until the carriers gave way and allowed it. Yes and no. This is mostly as an observer, but I don’t see a lot of unlocked, carrier free versions getting notably more updates than carrier versions. They tend to get them quicker, of course. I would theorize that due to carrier apathy, OEMs follow suit and even if carriers didn’t care, it was bound to happen. OEMs don’t make money off of supplying updates.1 point -
