  3. Bill Gates reveals why he prefers Android over iOS

I find it interesting/funny that tech people dismiss Gates as if he is just another billion that doesn't have low level understanding of technology. While people like Larry Ellison or Steve Jobs were making fun of engineers and programming as being 'beneath them' - Gates was proudly still engineering and programming code for Microsoft products up until the day he left. Personal Perspective: I have seen his handwritten notes on PCB and processor designs going back to the 70s, and read code he wrote in the 80s and 90s that it is brilliant. HIs notes and work wasn't management level BS, it was a step ahead of the engineers on the projects. Love or hate Gates, fine, dismiss him understanding or ability to use technology, and you are making a mistake.

  6. Bill Gates reveals why he prefers Android over iOS

wouldn't say hate, MS and Apple have been friends from the start just go back and look at the deals they've made since the Apple 1 days, they are just highly competitive.. MS wrote BASIC for the original Apples, wrote word processors for them, all kinds of software... Apple also gave MS some stuff they made too. They've been odd friends from the start, even Gates and Jobs were friends who would call each other to talk about stuff

  9. Router / switch question

You don't really need a L3 switch, unless you want to do routing at the switch or some sort of acls at the switch. All that is really needed here is basic L2 switches that do vlans.. Entry level will not do L3 - but for a few $ more you can get switches that do L3, and then you could leverage that if need be along with just normal L2.. Depends on budget - but yeah for future growth.. You can get some L3 switches that are great for small business.. Or the home network even My switches are L3, even though currently not doing any routing at them.. Just using L2 functionality.. I handle all routing at the router.. But I do some multicast filtering at the switch level.. Keeping noise off the network.

  10. Router / switch question

So you want to segment those into different networks, ie server room stuff 192.168.0.0/24, accounting 192.168.1.0/24, other 192.168.3.0/24, etc. Your drawing just shows devices connected to same network, via a daisy chained switches I take it you want to isolate these different rooms/users etc into their own networks so you can firewall between them? If so you will need at least 1 smart switch that can do vlans, and then a router that also supports vlans. Best if all your switches supported vlans. Then you could put devices no matter where they are at on whatever vlan/network you want. So if someone is sitting say in the accounting area, but should be on the sales vlan. Vlan capable switches don't have to be expensive, but what router do you have. If its some soho thing - never seen them support vlans.. Unless you can run 3rd party firmware on them. But yes this is a typical sort network.. Where you segment/isolate different types of devices/users based on need/use or location.. edit: Your looking to do something like this More than happy to help get there.. I take it you have some wifi as well - which you would want to isolate for guests, and also allow employees to access and access company resources, servers and printers and such.. You would need some AP that can do vlans as well. All of which can be done with even the smallest of budgets... If need be..

  11. Well, this is a tough one. I owned the 3DS, but I only bought maybe 3 games for it and hardly used it. I haven't bought a Microsoft console, but my most experience was probably with the 360. But the XBox One has the superior hardware and backwards compatibility... I guess I'll abstain.

  12. Nearly 30,000 Macs reportedly infected with mysterious malware

Hello, Parasitic computer viruses—that is, actual recursively-self-replicating-programs-whose-children-and-children's-children-are-possibly-evolved-copies, are actually pretty rare on Windows now. Only a handful of families are left (Ramnit, Sality, Virut, etc.) and even between all their variations, account for about a single-digit, percentage-wise, of what anti-virus/anti-malware/internet security/{insert name-du-jour here} companies see on a daily basis. The majority of what is seen is various forms on non-replicating malicious software (malware), such as trojan horses, multi-stage downloaders, cryptocurrency miners, ransomware and other things you might not want on your computer (adware, spyware, privacy-invasive stuff and so forth). 15. A proper review would have been to compare performance to an Intel MBP. That you don’t notice the difference in performance between a latest gen Intel Windows 10 laptop and the MBP says a lot more about the performance than you think.

So have they explained what happened to begin with, why the account was locked? And then what happened to change the mentality from, "we won't work with you because it's a liability" to "we're back in business"? It seemed to be quite a strong sentiment, so that 180 is quite the backtrack.

Perfect for those calming nights...in Basra: No? Hmm... This song is supposed to be the most relaxing song in the world, and has been found to reduce anxiety by up to 65%: This article also list another 9 songs, and features a playlist with 14 songs. But not in the list or that playlist is a personal favourite: EDIT: For myself, I would just do a search for Lo-fi under Spotify. I've found it great for studying, working, and falling sleep. Also Japanese meditation music.

  23. Router / switch question

For some reason this video came to my mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwwAXlE4OtU This guy shows an overview of business networks, towards the end would be less relevant given the small business premise, but you can see how those networks are sometimes organized. Those layer 3 switches he showed are capable of VLANs and like @BudMan said they don't need to be expensive and they'd allow you to segment things properly. Or do you want every device to be able to talk to the rest (e.g. Servers being able to use the printer in accounting) ?

  25. Bill Gates reveals why he prefers Android over iOS

I always find it baffling how many of us tech geeks are still making comments about Android and iOS like it is 2014. Aren't we supposed up to date with these things Many things have improved on both sides. Samsung is way quicker with updates and is now supporting phones even longer than Google. A lot of pre installed apps can be removed more easily and all stock apps are updated through the store so you don't need to wait for a whole new OS update like Apple does. Also Samsung has usually all the features of a new Android version already for years when Google introduces them in a new Android version. Google is more a follower than innovator these days when it comes to Android. Also iOS isn't as limited anymore as it was. You can now set a default browser and mail app. I can copy files from Google Drive to OneDrive with the files app. I can download files with safari or sync my big local MP3 library with the cloud, edit it and listen to it on the web or Apple devices like Groove used to be. And if you know how you can change app icon, change the default wallpaper every 30 minutes or even inject javascript code in a website (which I use to get rid of the PIP hack YouTube implemented). If you know what you are doing you can do a lot with both operating systems. Both OS have their advantages and issues but they are very alike anno 2021.

  26. Bill Gates reveals why he prefers Android over iOS

Not if you install safe applications. Also, you can use any application that will never ever be for IOS. Android is open source, owners can modify the source code of their Android devices. This appeals to users who want the flexibility to change the way their mobile devices run. But it can also make Android devices vulnerable to attacks. When altering their device’s source code, users could accidentally leave an opening for cybercriminals. It is exactly the position that had Microsoft and Bill Gates 2 decades ago. If you look at the latest vulnerabilities of Android, they are in the 99% based in: * Install some shady application (mostly Chinese) * And run it. ...I mean, I really don't care one way or another in this argument, but I think we've all read enough articles about malicious apps slipping past app review. Happens on Apple's App Store too, but given the nature of what Android allows apps to control/manage, it can be more damaging having a malicious Android app slip through. Saying this in respect to malicious launcher apps for example, a lot of times which get through thanks to malicious advertising.

  28. "I've often found hardware reviews on Neowin to be quite amateur and to recommend the Intel MacBook Pro over the Apple Silicon ones just about sums this site up" If you feel that way why did you read the review and why are you even here? Wait, so you want to know why Steve who's been here ~7 years read/watched the content and posted about it? Huh, when you put it that way, I have no idea... I've only been here ~16 years, as has spybeef. I guess we've just all been wasting our time reading articles here... Thanks for helping me see the light!! /s But seriously though, nobody should be expected to just pat people on the ass or completely agree with something. That's kinda the whole point of having a comment system to begin with... to have a conversation. Some people are passionate about this stuff... just as Rich was passionate about giving an iPhone a 7/10 because it didn't have a fingerprint reader. We're a bunch of tech nerds and we're just gonna disagree at times. It happens.

  30. Bill Gates reveals why he prefers Android over iOS

Are you sure, did you ask Trump or Farage if this was real or not? Going back to the 80s and 90s. Politics shifted from misleading and insincere to flat out lies that people mostly accepted, to people believing crazy lies, to people not believing something is true unless their dear leader tells them it is true. I always wondered how a society evolved into a place like North Korea where leaders were viewed as deities. Now I know, I have seen it happen. The counter conspiracy is just as dangerous and wraps back around to support the same authoritarian ideas and models. People end up believing everything and nothing. Hyper skepticism is just as dangerous as hyper compliance. Inspector Clouseau: "I believe everything and I believe nothing. I suspect everyone and I suspect no one."

  37. I've often found hardware reviews on Neowin to be quite amateur and to recommend the Intel MacBook Pro over the Apple Silicon ones just about sums this site up. No one should be buying Intel Macs unless there's a phenomenal deal to be had. The future for Mac hardware is very much the in-house silicon and to recommend Intel devices that won't even be able to run the iOS/iPadOS apps natively (which will become a big thing in the near future) is just ridiculous.

I've dumped Android after 8 years and I'm second year on iOS. Couldn't be happier. Just the way how updates are delivered and for how long is worth the limitations or weird things unique to Apple. Also people who say iOS is so much worse are full of s**t. It's very similar with cons and pros on both side. But calling one or another superior or inferior shows people have no clue at all.

This should be a lesson to people on why it's a monumentally stupid idea to put all your vital data on cloud servers and not have any kind of local backup. All it takes is for the cloud service to do something like this and you're screwed.

  44. Hello, The founders of this company are: • Nirav Patel, who worked at Apple and founded Oculus • Chris Lombardozzi, who worked at Shore Power and Xiamen ENRY • Kieran Larent, who also worked at Oculus and at Cobalt Digital • Po Yu Chen, who worked at Asus, Lenovo, HTC, Compal, and MSI • Kate Chouinard, who worked at Sphero and Dell • Lauren Mitchell, who also worked at Sphero • Adila Lai, who worked at Google, HPE, Mitsui, NXP and P&G • Jehan Suleman, who worked at MakerBot and those are just a few whose employment history I could figure out via LinkedIn and personal blogs. From looking through them, I see a lot of supply chain experience with China, Taiwan and the US, manufacturing, designing and even some founders of successful companies. Will they possibly have some manufacturing problems along the way? Possibly. But they have also assembled a group of folks who have been involved in the manufacture of other laptops, VR headsets, robots, servers, monitors, as well as consumer goods, to name a few things. So, it pretty much sounds like they've assembled a good team to deal with those issues. I did note that they currently have eight open positions listed on their website. Perhaps you should apply for one so you can bring your rich supply chain experience and knowledge of driving a company to their organization to prevent the apocalyptic vision you have described. 48. I love ThinkPads. I'm never shy in saying that I think they're phenomenal products. But look at what you're saying. You're saying that you're happy that they haven't changed. The TrackPoint is a relic from an age when touchpads on Windows laptops were really bad. Yes, the ThinkPad keyboard is still one of the best. And yes, there are people that love legacy components like the TrackPoint; that's why Lenovo doesn't kill these features off. They have this cult following. At the same time, there are people who won't buy a ThinkPad because they're "ugly" or they don't want a TrackPoint on the keyboard. So then, you get ThinkBook, which is more modern for those that want it, without sacrificing quality.
