IBM study: Gender equity isn't a top priority for business
matthiew and 6 others reacted to Astra.Xtreme for a topic
It's not a priority because most companies aren't discriminatory against gender or race... You can't force people to take jobs, and the issue is reversed when you do. It's about hiring the best candidate, and it's not the company's fault when the applicant pool isn't an equal split of diversity. As an engineer, I see this first hand. When I have people to hire, the applicants are 90% men and 75% of those are white. Nothing I can do about it, and of course everybody gets a fair chance.7 points -

Time to finally get a steady stream of zenimax titles on game pass for good. Also we can finally put the whole exclusive debate to rest hopefully. My thinking is that any big new IP will be exclusive to Xbox and PC while some smaller titles will be first to Xbox and then come to others way later. If Sony can hold games like FF7 remake as a exclusive for over a year and counting, I say MS can do the same with any zenimax games.3 points -

That doesn't work? What is the opposite of "hire the right person irrespective of gender"? It seems like some people think that the way to get rid of sexism is to add more sexism, and the way to get rid of racism is to add more racism. If someone is applying for a software development job, it should make no difference what they have between their legs.2 points -
Harman Kardon's Invoke speaker gets an update to kill Cortana
Elliot B. and one other reacted to Nas for a topic
Because the Cortana skills servers are being put to pasture. Without the update, the wake word (Cortana) would not illicit a response and your connected services would no longer work... resulting in a bricked device. At least with the firmware update, the device is transformed into a *native* Bluetooth speaker without any chance for connection interruption by outside conditions (such as internet connectivity loss, voice commands, physically activating the top blue glow button).2 points -

lol GREAT SATIRE let me know when i can run full excel, word, rotate the screen, attach/detach a keyboard, and use a pen to mark up some notes. Using ANY mac feels like going back in time 10 years. the hardware hasn't evolved over the last decade, it's just gotten faster. I'll stick with my surface pros, since they're literally the only devices which can do all my work. I'd rather not be one of those idiots wandering around with a mac AND an ipad to do the same job my SPX does (while costing and weighing far less). Macs are dinosaurs, derekaw. If you prefer a cheaper slower machine with not the best battery life then you should get that machine :-) Seriously, at some point soon an ARM Mac will run windows faster and for longer under emulation and on battery than any bendy, keyboard detaching tablet capable Intel-based laptop ever could. You should have stayed with the original comment.2 points -

While I agree that companies can only hire from the applicant pool they get, the issue is more systemic. There are fewer non-white, non-male applicants because there are fewer graduates who are qualified for the role (especially in STEM). There are fewer qualified people because they did not/cannot get the education. Can be many reasons: Poverty, Access to good and cheap healthcare, Access to good education, Lack of political representation. It can also be a number of factors that prevent people from applying even though they are qualified. Past workplace harassment, Maternity breaks, pay related issues, even a feeling of insecurity that they might stick out compared to the majority of the workplace. In such cases, it is upon the company to take the extra step to make sure everyone's welcome and that you get paid for what you work, not who you are. Remember, the world is still predominantly patriarchal and racist. More so than people are willing to admit.2 points -

Intel Evo vs Apple Silicon part eight: Conclusion
JesConradsen and one other reacted to Rich Woods for a topic
Spot-on! That or have someone (more) knowledgable about Apple products do the review/comparison. Sadly, they don't exist. Apple's policy puts a lot of emphasis on forming fan followings. You are either with Apple or not. There is no gray area, no impartial people. Yea...I'm really not sure what people want from me here. I feel like if I'm not saying that Apple Silicon isn't God's gift to the computing industry and is better than everything else in every possible way, then clearly I must be biased. As I mentioned, my overall finding was that I loved using the MacBook Pro, but felt that it was a real shame that there were too many limitations to ever consider it as a daily driver. So for something that I can't consider as a daily driver, I'm supposed to be praising it? The conclusion is to wait until the next generation when Apple has this stuff worked out, and that's somehow not good enough. Honestly, I was offered this hardware again, no matter who it's from, I wouldn't accept the project. It's not worth reading comments who aren't even remotely interested in discussing the differences between the products, but instead just want to bash you for not being an Apple fanboy, and it's not worth being accused of being paid off by Intel. Although it's easy to tell who has no clue what's going on by seeing people accuse writers of being paid off.2 points -

"Nothing I can do about it, and of course everybody gets a fair chance" You believe a white male growing up in middle class America and a poor brown/black child growing up in poorly funded educational systems receive equal chances to learn and develop a skillset as outlined in this article? He's pretty clearly saying he gives every applicant a fair chance. Your response led me to reread his post. You are correct, I misinterpreted it. Cheers 👍1 point -

IBM study: Gender equity isn't a top priority for business
Nerd Rage reacted to George P for a topic
Doesn't it? "BM refers to businesses that prioritise gender equity as ‘First Movers’ in its report and according to the findings, these businesses reported stronger financial performance, were more innovative, and recorded stronger customer employee and satisfaction." Programs like STEM which start at younger levels to get more girls into those fields are fine, I'm all for it and it helps in the long run. But say you have a program that says you have to have xx% females working at your business at all times, regardless of if that forces you to not hire a better male counterpart. It's those types of equity programs that sound good on paper but end up going counter to equality which is what everyone can agree on.1 point -

Remember, the world is still predominantly patriarchal and racist. More so than people are willing to admit. Sounds like an education system problem. Not sure why we'd expect the backend of hiring qualified employees to fix that. BTW, you forgot mentioning the most important factor. People's actual interest in a particular career. No amount of "equity" initiaves would get more women to want to become plumbers and replace toilets or get more men to want to become kindergarten teachers. We can't pretend personal preferences isn't the biggest factor.1 point -

Harman Kardon's Invoke speaker gets an update to kill Cortana
RCTRCT reacted to Tuskd for a topic
We all know the story on Cortana. The death of Cortana for consumers has been thoroughly dissected many times. Fact of which we all know, Cortana died for consumers when WM died. It has nothing to do with the quality or lack of quality of Cortana on desktop. Just my opinion but I'm not convinced Cortana on desktop would have been popular either way. It still feels weird talking to a laptop. It feels weird talking to any traditional device, even phones, when I can do the same in a couple of taps or swipes. Amazon were right when they released the Echo. You need a device that you cannot easily see but still be ubiquitous. No wonder they were able to basically create a market out of thin air.1 point -

I fired up my ancient Huawei Ascend P7 for the lolz to see how it's back on Android after being on iPhone for some 2+ years and it's pretty dope when you're again using a phone that can lie flat on the desk and not wobble all over the place as you're using it. I later had Xiaomi Mi5 that also had basically flush cameras and it was awesome. All new phones have these gigantic camera arrays off center that makes them wobble like crazy and I absolutely hate this dumb trend.1 point -

Bro, there are tons of apps out there, it is just a matter of finding one that works well. Frankly, for digital management and organization of your photos, you could download and use Adobe Bridge. It is free and super stable. There are dozens of articles out there with different suggestions for what you're looking for. I would say that posting this question in a forum is the most time-consuming and tedious way of going about that, as opposed to just doing some searches on Google or YouTube.1 point -

I dumped Windows a long time ago. Got sick and tired of the constant security problems and Microsoft's insistence on putting ads on Windows 10 and turning it into an advertising machine. I don't miss Windows one bit, but I did miss Acronis True Image so I was looking for an alternative and I came across this wonderful Acronis clone called RescueZilla, which is a GUI version of the command-line only CloneZilla. It works like a charm, with a friendly, easy to use interface, so if you are looking for an Acronis alternative that works just as good as its Windows counterpart, here you go. ^This!!!! Rich, there’s nothing personal in the criticisms from many. We can, however, see through this as a PR piece and that sadly you were used by Intel to do it. Whether you knew that or not before taking this review on, is another topic for discussion but many of us already have a dim view of Intel and it’s shady tactics so you started this review on the back foot. Sadly, Intel has used reviewers like you as both the attack vector (for them) but also the frontline soldier. You’re the one that cops the criticism even though it should be to Intel. my only advice in future is to be really careful about taking on these reviews going forward, because your audience can sniff out a PR exercise easily and many of us don’t take kindly to that. I say this as someone with almost zero interest in getting a Mac, so the outcome of this vs contest means nothing to me. It’s more about the manipulation in my books1 point -

"Pump and dump scheme".... I mean, I don't mean to be dismissive, but isn't that pretty much what investment is? Buy low, sell high? It's no different then the ###### people do on wall street to make a killing. It's douchey, sure... But it's not out of the ordinary type behavior in the business world. Would they be charging this guy if he bought high and sold low? No. So why go after this? Literally everyone who has invested in digital currency is looking to pump and dump (unless they got in when the price was at its bottom, cuz damn, they rich asf now :-p )... People only care about this because it's the rich guy getting richer, and not the poor guy coming up in the world. Nobody cares what that guy does cuz he appears more deserving to the 99%... It's only when the 1% does this that the world is up in arms... All I'm sayin is, if you're gonna stand for something, you better be willing to apply that standard to everyone, and not just the people you think aren't deserving of that wealth.1 point -
