Lots of people hanging on the word "some" in Phil's post. I've seen lots of different interpretations but if you ask me the vast majority of new games coming from now on will be Xbox and PC only. You have to say some because we already know of 2 new games that have deals to go to PlayStation. So you can't flat out say all new titles in the future. I expect games like ESO will stay multiplatform, but ES6? I see that as a system seller and ending up exclusive. Even if game pass subs are your goal, exclusives get you more of them. All you need to do is look at how fast Disney+ has grown.4 points -

I actually did watch just that to try and understand Samsung's claims about DRAM a bit better. Definitely worth a look, though the video is a few years old at this point and HMB wasn't mentioned. Maybe Anandtech or some hardware site will do some extensive review and tell if how it does in the long run with Host Memory Buffer. They already did such a review for another SSD: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12819/the-toshiba-rc100-ssd-review/2 and concluded "DRAMless NVMe SSDs don't have to suffer all the problems that DRAMless SATA drives exhibit." I can see one of those groups doing that and I will be interested in seeing what their results are2 points -

That doesn't work? What is the opposite of "hire the right person irrespective of gender"? It seems like some people think that the way to get rid of sexism is to add more sexism, and the way to get rid of racism is to add more racism. If someone is applying for a software development job, it should make no difference what they have between their legs. Considering we've been at this for decades, and little is changing, obviously this attitude doesn't work. Suddenly saying "we'll ignore gender and hire the right candidate" doesn't tally with some industries where the vast majority of employees are male. At my old job, I made sure to hire across broad demographics. Women, and non-whites were as represented as white males. And guess who were the only people upset by this, even though my team's productivity grew over 15% minimum per year. Plus, some of the best ideas came from the "non-core" group. I found they were more willing to push themselves to prove themselves and as a group we all benefited massively (including allowing, unofficially, more time off which gave our productivity another boost). The only people for whom positive discrimination doesn't work for, are those who already have the cards stacked in their favour. And even then, if they stopped and thought about it, the changes could (and often do) benefit them in the long run.2 points -

It's not a priority because most companies aren't discriminatory against gender or race... You can't force people to take jobs, and the issue is reversed when you do. It's about hiring the best candidate, and it's not the company's fault when the applicant pool isn't an equal split of diversity. As an engineer, I see this first hand. When I have people to hire, the applicants are 90% men and 75% of those are white. Nothing I can do about it, and of course everybody gets a fair chance.2 points -
Intel Evo vs Apple Silicon part eight: Conclusion
Jazmac and one other reacted to boo_star for a topic
Spot-on! That or have someone (more) knowledgable about Apple products do the review/comparison. Sadly, they don't exist. Apple's policy puts a lot of emphasis on forming fan followings. You are either with Apple or not. There is no gray area, no impartial people. Yea...I'm really not sure what people want from me here. I feel like if I'm not saying that Apple Silicon isn't God's gift to the computing industry and is better than everything else in every possible way, then clearly I must be biased. As I mentioned, my overall finding was that I loved using the MacBook Pro, but felt that it was a real shame that there were too many limitations to ever consider it as a daily driver. So for something that I can't consider as a daily driver, I'm supposed to be praising it? The conclusion is to wait until the next generation when Apple has this stuff worked out, and that's somehow not good enough. Honestly, I was offered this hardware again, no matter who it's from, I wouldn't accept the project. It's not worth reading comments who aren't even remotely interested in discussing the differences between the products, but instead just want to bash you for not being an Apple fanboy, and it's not worth being accused of being paid off by Intel. Although it's easy to tell who has no clue what's going on by seeing people accuse writers of being paid off. What I'd like is for someone who doesn't clearly have a strong dislike for anything Apple to be the one to review Apple products. Your dislike for them is very clear in every review you've done, and that's fine as long as you're not a reviewer. Someone reviewing products should be impartial, but you're clearly not capable of doing that with Apple products. The lengths you'll go to to try and prove that Apple products are crap by finding the most absurdly irrelevant "flaws" is probably the one reason why I bother to read your reviews, it's bordering on comedy at this point. You're just not suited to reviewing this stuff. That's fine but it's dragging down the credibility of this site.2 points -

Huawei launches Women Developers program for Int'l Women's Day
Jumping Jacinta reacted to zikalify for a topic
It's International Women's Day. Yes, I read your article. I'm kinda weird like that. My comment was on how hypocritical Huawei are in supporting this. That company is effectively ruled by the Government. A Government who had the one child policy which lead to possibly millions of female babies being killed as their farmer parents needed a boy to work their farm. A Government who carries out crimes against humanity and human rights violations against the Uyghur population in China including sterilizing the women if the reports are accurate. For Huawei and their Government masters to be promoting International Women's Day is a sick joke! Oh ok, some fair points there. PR China has marked March 8, however, since it's founding in 1949 before any of the things you mentioned had happened so it's probably promoted now as a national holiday more than anything.1 point -

Your opinion on Cortana is valid, but objectively, she was good a at lot of things, even if you didn't know. Things that extend outside the assistant/search aspect of ML/AI technologies. Cortana was a continually grown ML technology, one of the world's first major modern ML projects. She was used to locate water in parts of Africa, and is still used as the basis for the Microsoft speech recognition technologies, that score above human (The worlds best.) As an assistant she was also good, but I know that unless you embraced and extended her functionality like I did, she was 'meh' for most people. The technologies her project contributed to the world, will be written in ML/AI history.1 point -

Harman Kardon's Invoke speaker gets an update to kill Cortana
Nas reacted to +E.Worm Jimmy for a topic
Because the Cortana skills servers are being put to pasture. Without the update, the wake word (Cortana) would not illicit a response and your connected services would no longer work... resulting in a bricked device. At least with the firmware update, the device is transformed into a *native* Bluetooth speaker without any chance for connection interruption by outside conditions (such as internet connectivity loss, voice commands, physically activating the top blue glow button). ohh, they are switching off the servers? what about Cortana on win10 desktop? Gone too? The Cortana skills for previous-generation third-party hardware are being put to pasture, so not only HK Invoke are affected by this decision. The Cortana integration with Windows 10 is not going away -- it's getting morphed. The older services (for out-of-support Win10) will stop working, but newer services will continue/grow. OVERALL, part of their Cortana-on-desktop roadmap is to bake more of the Cortana features onto the desktop and away from their server infrastructure, thus reducing overall dependency. (It'll be sold as privacy/security since they'll collect less telemetry than they already do.) Anyway... Cortana will live on Windows10 but in a different manner than previously. Many server-side skills stopped working (or were never released), so the death will be organic. Thank you for your explanation.1 point -

IBM study: Gender equity isn't a top priority for business
domboy reacted to George P for a topic
While I agree that companies can only hire from the applicant pool they get, the issue is more systemic. There are fewer non-white, non-male applicants because there are fewer graduates who are qualified for the role (especially in STEM). There are fewer qualified people because they did not/cannot get the education. Can be many reasons: Poverty, Access to good and cheap healthcare, Access to good education, Lack of political representation. It can also be a number of factors that prevent people from applying even though they are qualified. Past workplace harassment, Maternity breaks, pay related issues, even a feeling of insecurity that they might stick out compared to the majority of the workplace. In such cases, it is upon the company to take the extra step to make sure everyone's welcome and that you get paid for what you work, not who you are. Remember, the world is still predominantly patriarchal and racist. More so than people are willing to admit. Sounds like an education system problem. Not sure why we'd expect the backend of hiring qualified employees to fix that. BTW, you forgot mentioning the most important factor. People's actual interest in a particular career. No amount of "equity" initiaves would get more women to want to become plumbers and replace toilets or get more men to want to become kindergarten teachers. We can't pretend personal preferences isn't the biggest factor. This is a valid argument against equity, you can't force people to like and do specific jobs. In many cases women just aren't interested in everything men are and vice versa. That's not to say all of them, just a large enough % to where you have these specific work areas that end up dominated by men or women. Like your example of kindergarten teachers.1 point -

We all know the story on Cortana. The death of Cortana for consumers has been thoroughly dissected many times. Fact of which we all know, Cortana died for consumers when WM died. Intel Evo vs Apple Silicon part eight: Conclusion
Jazmac reacted to adrynalyne for a topic
1. First of all, I'm not going to write up forward-looking statements as fact. I realize that everyone here seems to want me to be an Apple cheerleader instead of writing my experience, but if it's not supported, it's not supported. But also, any chance you have a link to where Apple promised to fix this in a future update? I've not seen any evidence that this was going to change. If it does change, however, I'll happily update this article, as well as other parts of the series where I mentioned the lack of multi-monitor support. I'm also not going to write about a third-party workaround for Apple explicitly not supporting it. 2. I wasn't only talking about Intel apps when I said apps launch faster on Intel PCs Also, the author mentions that the Logitech Brio cannot unlock macOS, but fails to mention that an Apple Watch can be used to unlock it, which doesn't work on Windows. That’s why I said it was a stupid comparison in the first place. Why anyone would go saying what hardware is compatible with one and not the other and then not doing the same with say an Apple Watch as you said is just showing bias. There was no reason to go down that rabbit hole in the first place. There are many things not supported by each other.1 point -

Windows 10 is getting rid of the 3D Objects folder soon
d5aqoëp reacted to xMorpheousx416 for a topic
Explorer seems to be the one thing that everyone uses on a constant, daily basis. Yet it seems that MS has had little to do with over the years since 3.1, barely making relevant changes only to appease the looks of the corresponding OS. Explorer needs a serious overhaul. We need to have more control over what's in it. What links we want to have. Don't double up on folder icons just because a USB device is plugged in. Leave folder options alone just because you rename the folder. (renaming causes Explorer to refresh the icons back to the default setting of "large icons") Be able to change folder column option defaults to others in the list. Get rid of 3D Objects (as seen here). Get rid of OneDrive (if you're not using it). Get rid of Quick Access (if you're not using it). Add Copy To/Move To options to the Desktop without having to use a reg script. (all other folders within Explore have this, the actual desktop does not) Fix the dark mode ribbon issues where some areas turn black on Explorer windows in the background. Delete / Add options for right click menu items without a reg script...or going thru the Users or ProgramData folders. And... for the love of all EVIL.... TABS TABS TABS!!!!! without a third party add-on. Just the tip of ideas I run into on using Explorer on a daily basis.1 point -
