Lots of people hanging on the word "some" in Phil's post. I've seen lots of different interpretations but if you ask me the vast majority of new games coming from now on will be Xbox and PC only. You have to say some because we already know of 2 new games that have deals to go to PlayStation. So you can't flat out say all new titles in the future. I expect games like ESO will stay multiplatform, but ES6? I see that as a system seller and ending up exclusive. Even if game pass subs are your goal, exclusives get you more of them. All you need to do is look at how fast Disney+ has grown.4 points -

That doesn't work? What is the opposite of "hire the right person irrespective of gender"? It seems like some people think that the way to get rid of sexism is to add more sexism, and the way to get rid of racism is to add more racism. If someone is applying for a software development job, it should make no difference what they have between their legs. Considering we've been at this for decades, and little is changing, obviously this attitude doesn't work. Suddenly saying "we'll ignore gender and hire the right candidate" doesn't tally with some industries where the vast majority of employees are male. At my old job, I made sure to hire across broad demographics. Women, and non-whites were as represented as white males. And guess who were the only people upset by this, even though my team's productivity grew over 15% minimum per year. Plus, some of the best ideas came from the "non-core" group. I found they were more willing to push themselves to prove themselves and as a group we all benefited massively (including allowing, unofficially, more time off which gave our productivity another boost). The only people for whom positive discrimination doesn't work for, are those who already have the cards stacked in their favour. And even then, if they stopped and thought about it, the changes could (and often do) benefit them in the long run.2 points -

It's not a priority because most companies aren't discriminatory against gender or race... You can't force people to take jobs, and the issue is reversed when you do. It's about hiring the best candidate, and it's not the company's fault when the applicant pool isn't an equal split of diversity. As an engineer, I see this first hand. When I have people to hire, the applicants are 90% men and 75% of those are white. Nothing I can do about it, and of course everybody gets a fair chance.2 points -
Intel Evo vs Apple Silicon part eight: Conclusion
Jazmac and one other reacted to boo_star for a topic
Spot-on! That or have someone (more) knowledgable about Apple products do the review/comparison. Sadly, they don't exist. Apple's policy puts a lot of emphasis on forming fan followings. You are either with Apple or not. There is no gray area, no impartial people. Yea...I'm really not sure what people want from me here. I feel like if I'm not saying that Apple Silicon isn't God's gift to the computing industry and is better than everything else in every possible way, then clearly I must be biased. As I mentioned, my overall finding was that I loved using the MacBook Pro, but felt that it was a real shame that there were too many limitations to ever consider it as a daily driver. So for something that I can't consider as a daily driver, I'm supposed to be praising it? The conclusion is to wait until the next generation when Apple has this stuff worked out, and that's somehow not good enough. Honestly, I was offered this hardware again, no matter who it's from, I wouldn't accept the project. It's not worth reading comments who aren't even remotely interested in discussing the differences between the products, but instead just want to bash you for not being an Apple fanboy, and it's not worth being accused of being paid off by Intel. Although it's easy to tell who has no clue what's going on by seeing people accuse writers of being paid off. What I'd like is for someone who doesn't clearly have a strong dislike for anything Apple to be the one to review Apple products. Your dislike for them is very clear in every review you've done, and that's fine as long as you're not a reviewer. Someone reviewing products should be impartial, but you're clearly not capable of doing that with Apple products. The lengths you'll go to to try and prove that Apple products are crap by finding the most absurdly irrelevant "flaws" is probably the one reason why I bother to read your reviews, it's bordering on comedy at this point. You're just not suited to reviewing this stuff. That's fine but it's dragging down the credibility of this site.2 points -

Samsung introduces the new 980 NVMe DRAM-less SSD, starting at $49.99
Nas reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
This is topic that based on 'theory' of the hardware, Linus Tech Tips was correct, but in actual use isn't accurate. (Which Linus has found on several occasions when dealing with DRAMs drives and finding their performance holds up in cheap and random builds with lower end drive technologies.) Maybe link to some of those videos? Here is where Linus is wrong. DRAM is really important to help the controller and various phase differences of writing technologies, like QLC, need to provide the 3000+ type SSD writes. However, in a modern OS technology, like Windows, the OS provides the DRAM out of system RAM to function in the very same way as onboard DRAM usually works. So in a cachless OS state, Linus is technically right. In reality, most users are going to be using Windows and will not see a difference. There are even some drives with DRAM that perform slower or more latent than DRAMless drives because of slower DRAM or less optimized write/read methods than used by the driver and the OS. In the end, test - and look for tests. Notice tests that span the entire fill capacity of the drive. (Drives with QLC and other multibit storage mechanisms often get slower when the faster single bit sections are converted to multibit storage to provide the full capacity of the drive.) In my own anecdotal experience, I have seen expensive high DRAM capacity drives get decimated in by cheaper drives without DRAM. I have also seen the inverse. Test - Reviews with benchmarks. Then buy one with a place with a liberal return policy. There are chipsets and other parts of a system that will have problems with various models and brands that result in slower or possibly faster pairings with specific drives. This is true for all hardware - see how it pairs. (Even with mechanical HDDs in the 90s, the controller paired with various drive brands/models would produce vastly different results in specific combinations. This is also true today, often even more so.)1 point -

The iPhone may get a periscope camera in 2023 instead of next year
Cosmocronos reacted to Steve121178 for a topic
They are first in line for most things but their manufacturing partners can't necessarily churn out >75,000,000 periscope camera modules every quarter. It takes many, many months of planning & building up inventories once Apple approves the final design. It's the same for the displays. The reason why Apple only went OLED across the board in 2020 was that their partners could finally meet the quality and demand of what Apple requires. And this was only possible because Apple had to use a few display manufactures to meet this demand.1 point -

There are reasons why countries have vastly different economy levels, but many prefer comfortable lies over inconvenient truth. Harman Kardon's Invoke speaker gets an update to kill Cortana
Nas reacted to +E.Worm Jimmy for a topic
Because the Cortana skills servers are being put to pasture. Without the update, the wake word (Cortana) would not illicit a response and your connected services would no longer work... resulting in a bricked device. At least with the firmware update, the device is transformed into a *native* Bluetooth speaker without any chance for connection interruption by outside conditions (such as internet connectivity loss, voice commands, physically activating the top blue glow button). ohh, they are switching off the servers? what about Cortana on win10 desktop? Gone too? The Cortana skills for previous-generation third-party hardware are being put to pasture, so not only HK Invoke are affected by this decision. The Cortana integration with Windows 10 is not going away -- it's getting morphed. The older services (for out-of-support Win10) will stop working, but newer services will continue/grow. OVERALL, part of their Cortana-on-desktop roadmap is to bake more of the Cortana features onto the desktop and away from their server infrastructure, thus reducing overall dependency. (It'll be sold as privacy/security since they'll collect less telemetry than they already do.) Anyway... Cortana will live on Windows10 but in a different manner than previously. Many server-side skills stopped working (or were never released), so the death will be organic. Thank you for your explanation.1 point -

While I agree that companies can only hire from the applicant pool they get, the issue is more systemic. There are fewer non-white, non-male applicants because there are fewer graduates who are qualified for the role (especially in STEM). There are fewer qualified people because they did not/cannot get the education. Can be many reasons: Poverty, Access to good and cheap healthcare, Access to good education, Lack of political representation. It can also be a number of factors that prevent people from applying even though they are qualified. Past workplace harassment, Maternity breaks, pay related issues, even a feeling of insecurity that they might stick out compared to the majority of the workplace. In such cases, it is upon the company to take the extra step to make sure everyone's welcome and that you get paid for what you work, not who you are. Remember, the world is still predominantly patriarchal and racist. More so than people are willing to admit. Sounds like an education system problem. Not sure why we'd expect the backend of hiring qualified employees to fix that. BTW, you forgot mentioning the most important factor. People's actual interest in a particular career. No amount of "equity" initiaves would get more women to want to become plumbers and replace toilets or get more men to want to become kindergarten teachers. We can't pretend personal preferences isn't the biggest factor.1 point -

We all know the story on Cortana. The death of Cortana for consumers has been thoroughly dissected many times. Fact of which we all know, Cortana died for consumers when WM died. It has nothing to do with the quality or lack of quality of Cortana on desktop. Just my opinion but I'm not convinced Cortana on desktop would have been popular either way. It still feels weird talking to a laptop. It feels weird talking to any traditional device, even phones, when I can do the same in a couple of taps or swipes. Amazon were right when they released the Echo. You need a device that you cannot easily see but still be ubiquitous. No wonder they were able to basically create a market out of thin air.1 point -

Was about to say the same! Very well written and explained! I didn't have to look for secondary sources to understand it. “Additionally, Google used Word Clouds to visualize the semantic meaning behind each cohort” Hah! I was thinking of adding a disclaimer that some amount of knowledge of statistics/maths/machine learning would be preferred before you dive into the article but then decided against it because it might sound too pretentious. Although, I'm happy to refer readers to relevant articles if they are interested in knowing more about the methodologies mentioned briefly in the article. I studied most of these methods like agglomerative clustering method with changing centroids during the Data Science course at university and I know how mathematical/technical they can be so I did not go into too many details and just briefly discussed their concept. And specifically with respect to word clouds, I'll add here that it is a visualization technique to show keywords from the data in this case. These keywords can be used to understand the semantic meaning behind a collection of text. For example, in this case, when Google tested the algorithm on the music data, they generated a cohort which had a word cloud containing keywords like "metal", "hard metal", etc. which shows that the cohort mostly contained users who tend to listen to songs of the metal genre, so it's a good cohort/classification. Sorry, I know I could have explained it more in the article but I didn't want to make it a longer read than it already is1 point -
Intel Evo vs Apple Silicon part eight: Conclusion

1. First of all, I'm not going to write up forward-looking statements as fact. I realize that everyone here seems to want me to be an Apple cheerleader instead of writing my experience, but if it's not supported, it's not supported. But also, any chance you have a link to where Apple promised to fix this in a future update? I've not seen any evidence that this was going to change. If it does change, however, I'll happily update this article, as well as other parts of the series where I mentioned the lack of multi-monitor support. I'm also not going to write about a third-party workaround for Apple explicitly not supporting it. 2. I wasn't only talking about Intel apps when I said apps launch faster on Intel PCs Also, the author mentions that the Logitech Brio cannot unlock macOS, but fails to mention that an Apple Watch can be used to unlock it, which doesn't work on Windows.1 point -
