  1. Agreed. I personally feel that a base install should contain the OS not apps that few people use - they should be store downloads. This is a step in the right direction.

I don't know what the Steam version will do, but it goes on sale for 50% off on the MS Store fairly often. The game still gets updates and new content too. It's not new, but it's not old. It’s not “old” but it’s old enough that the listed price is laughable.

  10. Adobe Photoshop now runs natively on Apple M1 Macs

“Adobe says that its internal tests show a roughly 50% increase in performance in various tasks in Photoshop compared to previous generations of the same devices.” So it's 50% faster than the emulated version? I'd hope so... It will be noticeably faster for the 1-2K people who use this on an M1 machine. The real question is, how does it compare to a similarly spec'd x86 machine - with a current gen CPU?

Precisely. We're not falling for the usual Apple weasel words marketing spin on this. They want professionals to take this product line as something more than a prosumer iPad, they'd better be benchmarking apples to apples here. "Adobe says that its internal tests show a roughly 50%..." Not that Apple isn't misleading with some of their marketing, but let's at least hold the right party responsible here...

It took a pandemic for everyone to start taking PC webcams seriously. Still, decent quality webcams remain standalone devices. They are not making it into expensive $2000-$3000 laptops.

  34. It's not about perfecting the tech as introducing something they feel would be useful. Night-mode was a huge step up from what we saw when Google first mainstreamed the feature, and Apple pursuing that made sense. At this point, better zoom options is nice, but still a yawn for me... up there with 120Hz displays. I don't think there's much exciting going on in the phone space today honestly and if that's the case, pursuing these features would make sense when there's little left to really iterate on. Just my thoughts though -- I'm kinda "phoned out". Happy with my device and probably won't be looking to change anything up for another 3 years at least. You must not use your camera a lot then, I can't even get a proper picture of a light house that is 500ft away. On vacation I'll still use my stand alone camera for those types of shots, but when you're out and about doing day to day things, it'd be nice to just zoom in and viola, you're good to go. Also, 5x, 10x is mainstream. Jeepers, I like a good quality phone camera, but I'm realistic on what it can and can't do! I'm also realistic on what my real camera can do. 5-10x optical zoom is far from mainstream, my biggest lens on my real camera is 18-135mm, the equivalent of 7.5x zoom, and that thing cost me $800. I'd love to do zoom photography to get amazing perspectives on things, but a periscope phone camera of the sizes we're talking about here would never be able to compete with a real camera, and nor should I expect it to. And I'm realistic, I'm not going to shell out $1k for a decent piece of glass to do bird or long distance landscape photography. I'll admire shots taken by experts. But I guess if all you want are shots of that lighthouse you saw in the distance as you were traveling that one time, then the quality of these would be ok. At least with the Samsung S21 they realised that a stupid MP count was harming their chances of working, especially when you're dealing with an f-stop of 4.9!! If Apple can get that balance, then the wait will be worth it. Until then, my DSLR is still no competition to these $2k phones.

  38. WTF back at you. The sub-thread up to that point had been: "More excited for the ARM-powered stuff at this point." "I am not excited about Qualcomm's chips and Apple's M1 while interesting only runs MacOS (natively)." "What about Qualcomm disinterests you? Genuinely curious." "Poor performance for the price." At that point you hadn't really specified if you were referring to x86 or Apple. But either way, other than the comment about Qualcomm vs M1 comparisons being dumb (not directed at you per say), the rest of my comment was specifically about how I don't find the Snapdragon 8cx be the slow compared to a very similar machine with an x86 chip in it. So no, comparing similar machines, I don't agree with your comment of "slow performance for the price". Surface Pro 7 isn't cheap either (though granted it has a cheaper device for the lowest entry model). Neither the Pro 7 nor the Pro X are high-powered machines, nor is that the intent. Of course I understand Intel and AMD have much faster CPU options available, but those also have higher power and cooling requirements and wouldn't work in the class of device Qualcomm's chip does. Shucks, Microsoft can't even get an x86 chip in the Pro X form factor for those same reasons. I agree with most of what you’ve said after that. Qualcomm absolutely needs to up their game, and yes WoA limitations currently mean it’s not for everyone as I said. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "no 32-bit program support". I'm assuming you mean no x64 emulation, as 32bit x86 emulation has been available since Windows 10 ARM Edition was release. It also supports ARM32 apps in addition to ARM64. But the lack of x64 emulation is that's one of the drawbacks I'm referring to. So far everything I've personally wanted to use has worked just fine (except for Minecraft, but that's an OpenGL issue), but I do know there are some apps that are now only available as x64. x64 emulation should be coming with the fall update. Hopefully I've been clearer now as well.Oh yes, OpenGL is the other one that I somehow omitted. OpenGL is something I omitted by mistake earlier. I seriously hope something is done to remedy that because it'd be nice having access to a simple game like Minecraft on the SPX or future equivalent I am looking forward to acquiring.

  41. And this was only possible because Apple had to use a few display manufactures to meet this demand. That last line basically negates your entire argument. Other OEMs have relied on multiple manufactures and churn out flagships just fine. There are plenty of flagship phones, particularly single model lines (i.e Samsung Galaxy) with a massive user base. It wasn't until last quarter where Apple came back on top for most purchased phone brand. Be carefull, it is not because some other manufacturers sell a lot of smartphones that they sell a lot of their flagship phones.

  44. I actually did watch just that to try and understand Samsung's claims about DRAM a bit better. Definitely worth a look, though the video is a few years old at this point and HMB wasn't mentioned. Maybe Anandtech or some hardware site will do some extensive review and tell if how it does in the long run with Host Memory Buffer. They already did such a review for another SSD: https://www.anandtech.com/show...-toshiba-rc100-ssd-review/2 and concluded "DRAMless NVMe SSDs don't have to suffer all the problems that DRAMless SATA drives exhibit." I can see one of those groups doing that and I will be interested in seeing what their results are Just wanted to chime in on here with this more recent video from Linus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbYG7q9OO18 Basically, the NVMe 1.2 spec allows the controller to use system memory as a cache instead. Btw the SSDs in Surface Pro X, Laptop 3/4 and Pro 7+ are DRAM-less SSDs, due to the size format not having enough space to fit a DRAM cache on there. I don't see why Samsung is doing it on a normal-sized M.2, unless they're forecasting that DRAM pricing going to get more expensive to warrant it on 'cheaper' drives.

  45. "However, Samsung says it overcame the hurdles imposed by removing the DRAM by using Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology, which links the drive to the DRAM on the host processor instead." LOL! Ah yes, that 2MB L2 cached shared by all systems in the PC is really a good replacement for a dedicated direct cache... Who are they attempting to fool?

  46. Some companies collect people from different countries like pokemons in order to jerk off their “moral superiority” . A lot of people have distorted view of the real world. For example, not realizing that many candidates they get are already filtered by merit, on the border, which is part of the brain drain process. There are reasons why countries have vastly different economy levels, but many prefer comfortable lies over inconvenient truth. In last 20 years I saw many new beliefs and people jumping on them like it is the only one true religion .

  47. IBM study: Gender equity isn't a top priority for business

That doesn't work? What is the opposite of "hire the right person irrespective of gender"? It seems like some people think that the way to get rid of sexism is to add more sexism, and the way to get rid of racism is to add more racism. If someone is applying for a software development job, it should make no difference what they have between their legs.

  48. IBM study: Gender equity isn't a top priority for business

"Nothing I can do about it, and of course everybody gets a fair chance" You believe a white male growing up in middle class America and a poor brown/black child growing up in poorly funded educational systems receive equal chances to learn and develop a skillset as outlined in this article? He's pretty clearly saying he gives every applicant a fair chance. Your response led me to reread his post. You are correct, I misinterpreted it. Cheers 👍

  49. IBM study: Gender equity isn't a top priority for business

While I agree that companies can only hire from the applicant pool they get, the issue is more systemic. There are fewer non-white, non-male applicants because there are fewer graduates who are qualified for the role (especially in STEM). There are fewer qualified people because they did not/cannot get the education. Can be many reasons: Poverty, Access to good and cheap healthcare, Access to good education, Lack of political representation. It can also be a number of factors that prevent people from applying even though they are qualified. Past workplace harassment, Maternity breaks, pay related issues, even a feeling of insecurity that they might stick out compared to the majority of the workplace. In such cases, it is upon the company to take the extra step to make sure everyone's welcome and that you get paid for what you work, not who you are. Remember, the world is still predominantly patriarchal and racist. More so than people are willing to admit. Sounds like an education system problem. Not sure why we'd expect the backend of hiring qualified employees to fix that. BTW, you forgot mentioning the most important factor. People's actual interest in a particular career. No amount of "equity" initiaves would get more women to want to become plumbers and replace toilets or get more men to want to become kindergarten teachers. We can't pretend personal preferences isn't the biggest factor.
