  1. Indeed asking for a reference

References are not unusual when applying for a job. As for Indeed asking for a reference, I would cut them out and ask the potential employer if they made the request, then hand it to them if they did.

  2. Agreed, 100%. All this mucking around drilling down through menus and hoping to hit the "sweet spot," all the while keeping your eyes on the road does not work and never will. At least with a knob or switch you still have your "feel." As for the "zero risk of mechanical failure," a red herring. What happens when the entire LED display goes dark (which it will)? Then, you are really screwed.

  3. Is 5ghz wi-fi just as good as a wired internet connection?

First, it's 5 GHz wifi, please don't call it 5G wifi. Because 5G is a different thing. Wired is always better, faster, more reliable. But that being said, in wifi, the PHY speed and signal strength are two factors that determine how good or bad it is. Do a speed test on both wired and 5 GHz wireless if your client PHY speed is decent - it may be good enough for your internet speed requirements - may offer the same speed via wired too. Not for LAN/WLAN transfers where wired is miles ahead. Read this long but very interesting page to learn more about Wifi: https://www.duckware.com/tech/wifi-in-the-us.html

  8. Related news: in the wake of Google antitrust investigations, Google's Kent Walker accused Microsoft of being the one behind the Exchange (and Solarwinds) attacks. Apparently, he can't tell the difference between Microsoft and China! Here is what he said: He went as far as mentioning FUD (from the Bill Gates era,) and Scroogled (from the Ballmer era!) He forgot that Microsoft fired the instigator of the Scroogled and that Google engineers bought all the Scroogled merchandise in good humor.

  9. I was with you until you mentioned SSH. I've yet to meet a distro that has a secure setup out of the box. That has its own security concerns. Best not poke the bear and leave that disabled.

  11. AT&T expands 5G to all on older unlimited wireless plans

Still waiting to be able to use 5G mode on VZW. I check a few times a week and I'm still getting 0.2mbit down, it's ridiculously saturated. Verizon can have the fastest bands they want, unless they can run c-band without the same saturation, that won't mean much.

  12. AT&T expands 5G to all on older unlimited wireless plans

I think it’s a billing system issue. Although it’s nicer to be able to charge customers exorbitant prices for what should be free, it becomes harder as much more of the customer base is on a new technology and delineating radio abilities required more work.

  14. LG creates Alluto to advance consumer-grade automotive technology

While I wouldn't mind a big LCD/LED to display the various things like speed/engine details/maps etc. I would still prefer having physical buttons to actually interact with the vehicle.. The concept of having to locate a touch screen tap while in the drivers seat to turn on/off something is just stupid.

  15. There are some benefits, such as zero risk of mechanical failure I wouldn't go that far; touch screens are delicate devices that can die at a moments notice for numerous reasons. No doubt mechanical switches and gauges can far outlast these stupid flat panel displays. There are lots of cars from the 50s and 60s still on the road that have perfectly functioning gauges and controls.

  17. Microsoft confirms Windows 10 printer crashes after Patch Tuesday updates

This is the second update in recent past that has broken printing. I'm an ISV and get tech support emails about this crap when people think it's my software causing the error. So, I have that to look forward to! Thanks for the heads up.

  18. Adobe Photoshop now runs natively on Apple M1 Macs

“Adobe says that its internal tests show a roughly 50% increase in performance in various tasks in Photoshop compared to previous generations of the same devices.” Not fast enough. You won’t notice a difference. Buy an Intel Mac instead.
