Yeah same here. Wasn't that part of the plan with Cumulative update? Stop publishing it quickly if it causes problems and re-release without the component causing the problem? They can always include the fixed version of that component in the next CU....you know...since its a CU. Gosh I hate Microsoft's handling of updates, I don't hate the concept of Windows Updates. it's not like they have 20+ years of OTA updates experience right?3 points -

This is just the begining. That is why now for years in the past, companies twisted their arms for these idiots, now the snowball has grew huge so there's no turning back. The companies can no longer say "SCREW YOU SENSITIVE PEOPLE". Oh no! They now have to keep changing. There's no end. Mark my words, tomorrow it'll be something else. Also backed right after the Kickstarter campaign. From a tech perspective the biggest hurdle they face is the whole dynamic network shard / server tech. If they don’t manage to implement that then this game has no real future. This in itself will take them another few years... Then they also need to fill up the game with actual content.. . There is a lot of potential but their biggest hurdle still needs to be overcome1 point -

The appeal to tradition in a nutshell: It was ok 67 years ago, it must be ok today. Therefore: It was ok to have characters randomly shooting guns when angry then, it's ok to have that now. It was ok to racially stereotype people 100 years ago, it is ok to do that now. It was ok to own people 250 years ago, it is ok to do that now. You ever think that maybe, just maybe it wasn't okay back then? Maybe It was a cheap laugh for a cartoon that was done without the authors thinking of the long term ramifications of their actions? Was it funny? Sure. Did I grow up with it? Sure. Is it something that I would put in a remake series now? Absolutely not. Would I stop adults from being able to watch (or show) the originals? Never.1 point -

Welp, we may as well close all the forums except for the IT help sections then, and disable commenting on news articles. Those places are there for discussions to be had, no one would expect change to come about from the discussions that are held there. The Internet would become a much quieter place if we removed discussions, that's for sure.1 point -

I think the issue is this change makes it so parents don't have to "choose". They can continue to ignore what thier kids are doing on the service because by default these "controversial" movies won't be there. It also means the answer is to get mad at the service for making certain things available rather than getting involved in what thier kids are consuming.1 point -

You can't fault him, that's exactly what they have done with this move. Rather than the child stumbling across the film without the parents knowing, the parents now have to decide if they want their child to watch the film, and they have to decide if they want to talk to their child about the representations within the film.1 point -

This has to stop. I'm all about respect, inclusion, diversity, but let parents judge these old works on their own and come to their own conclusions with their kids. It's not big brothers business on what parents want their kids to learn, teach in a home, entertainment setting.1 point -

I like how in the example video, he YOLOs the appcompat shim through with the default identifiers. For Edge. Which includes the full build number. That should work for about a week before it self updates and breaks again. Appcompat shims are the bees knees, but don't forget when they're installed. The compatibility toolkit is kinda... not great about handling that aspect (always save your shim to an .sdb file, and manage the installation state with sdbinst). If I had the issue, I'd be inclined to see if the Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers registry keys could be used to achieve the same compatibility flag activation - definitely easier to set/revert/audit state at scale. Not all flags work when set there in the registry, but a lot do even if not officially documented. Changes for the Layers keys in HKCU are interpreted at every process launch, but HKLM less frequently (I think at logon for user context and startup for system context, but it's been a while since I've had reason to fiddle with those).1 point -

Holy ###### with those mitigations! I miss the days where they would automate things in a FixIt thing and users just needed to download that assistant, let it do its thing and enjoy (or not haha) the results. Here you even have to download something off of the ADK for certain cases (and the guy in the video even goes to download almost the whole thing instead of just the compatibility tools). Anyway, the issue here seems to be with the driver vendors themselves then? Because it's not that all type 3 drivers are affected, apparently only some are, transparent as ever Microsoft *sigh*. Anyway, their Fax "printer" is a type 3, so is Adobe's PDF printer (the one that comes with Acrobat Pro in my machine) and from what I can see in that screenshot so is SnagIt 2021's and some HP Laser printer model. Personally though, no problems at all at home with an HP inkjet multifunction one.1 point -

Is 5ghz wi-fi just as good as a wired internet connection?
Brandon H reacted to DaDude for a topic
Thanks, everyone. I was looking through Monoprice and they have some really nice, inexpensive 50+ feet ethernet cables that are ultra slim. So I'll go ahead and move to the computer to the new location and use wireless for now. Then I'll probably order the long, slim cables from Monoprice and once those arrive, I'll run the long cable around the room and go back to wired again.1 point -

I'm ok with a HUD projection on the windshield, but physical buttons/analog gauges on the dash. A car shouldn't become disabled when your touch screen instrument cluster becomes inoperable. The likely hood of any of this LCD crap being made available as replacement parts years into the future to the same degree as physical counterparts is also questionable. None of this garbage is standardized. People can't upgrade cars at the same frequency as their phones, auto industry! I've always envisioned the windshield, door, back glass evolving into a transparent screen, displaying vital data, navigation prompts and with the addition of proximity/motion/nightvision sensors, realtime alerts to things like a deer attempting to ambush you from your right etc. That'd make me want a new vehicle more than the constant addition of FAD crap tech like Alexa being built in...1 point -

Microsoft is changing the way Edge updates on macOS
quikmantx reacted to samw61 for a topic
While this sounds great for Mac users, why is it using its own updating service on Windows rather than the Microsoft Store? I may be 8 years too late, but isn't that what the store was for, removing the need for each app to have their own update service (or rely on Windows Update) and making Windows modular??1 point -

Favorite Windows OS version
stereopixels reacted to shockz for a topic
From that list I'd have to go with Windows XP... maybe it's the rose tinted glasses when I look back on it, but it was such a breakthrough OS. A consumer version of Windows, finally on an NT kernel, and the increased system requirements compared to Windows ME really shined through on just how radically different the OS behaved on the newest systems at the time. If you had a modern system, the driver compatibility was really revolutionary at the time for such a broad range of systems and the performance really took off, especially for productivity apps. I remember joining this site around the time the final betas before the release candidate came out, and it was just such an exciting time in the Windows community. I remember the simple things, like the Windows Media Player 7 visualizations blowing my mind haha. I remember Microsoft had a count down clock to Oct 25th and it's release date, checked it every day on the webcam lol. Not to mention uxtheme.dll customizations were some of the coolest things you could do on an OS. I remember how crazy cool people could make things. I think my all time favorite windows though is Windows 98 Second Edition, that thing was rock solid for me. Loved it. My least favorite version is probably Windows 10, not for the whole telemetry drama, but just the constant beta feeling I can't ever shake from it. The UI inconsistencies alone peg my OCD. Ever since Windows 8.x, Windows has felt like a perpetual beta for me, tailored to form factors I don't ever use it for. It's no longer what makes my computer shine, more like a burden to it. Windows 7 was the last great OS from Microsoft, where it felt like it was designed for a PC, and only a PC.1 point -
