Microsoft Word on the web can now convert your work into a PowerPoint presentation
jasondefaoite and one other reacted to Fleet Command for a topic
I can't imagine what use cases this feature could have. A presentation and a word document are two different animals. If I were Microsoft, I'd have spent my time on better things, like: - Markdown support to OneNote and Word - SVG support to Excel and PowerPoint - Refreshing the HTML export feature - Improving that catastrophic "Read Aloud" feature, which mispronounces "resumes" like "resumés".2 points -

What was the last time you saw a person on crack spending $10 billion? Samsungs consideration of $10 billion on a chipmaking plant in texas... Apple in 2013 spending $10 billion on "innovation"... Want any more or are we done for today with the internet? More please... and the evidence that any of these had anything to do with crack.2 points -

Xbox Live is changing names to "Xbox network"
MS Bob 11 and one other reacted to random_n for a topic
I kinda get it, Xbox Live was there to delineate online stuff from offline stuff back in the day. It's basically all online stuff now; the fuzzy line has fully dissolved. It's also as if McDonalds were dropping the Quarter Pounder name because they wanted to sell another burger with a quarter pound of beef. Sure, it's not the greatest name in the first place, but there's something of a wee bit of name recognition and momentum behind it.2 points -

Microsoft are pro-privacy in general. What? They have telemetry in everything that cannot be turned off. There's no end to end encryption in ANY of it either. How is that pro privacy? lol Get news about MS from other sources that Neowin. If we're talking about Windows, yeah there's no 'off switch. But you can view all the telemetry they send. You'd be hard-pressed to not find any telemetry systems on any consumer commercialised app, website or operating system. Also, what do you mean by no end to end encryption? Are you referring to the Microsoft telemetry or Discord chats?2 points -

Sony reportedly shutting down PlayStation Store on the PS3, Vita, and PSP this summer
PeterTHX and one other reacted to DaisyM for a topic
You can still play the games you have installed, and the article doesn't address whether or not a person can re-download a previous purchased game on the device or a newly acquired one. It is only saying purchases will no longer be allowed. Downloadable games on the original Xbox for instance was realistically only available for less than about 7 years as that was completely shutdown in 2010. Games for Windows Live games were only available for about 7 years, these users really got the shaft. In the meantime, Microsoft opened yet another silly store i.e. Microsoft Store (renamed from Windows Store). Valve continues to be the best supported digital store long-term. Also, if one has a Xbox 360 and they attempt to purchase many Microsoft games via the Store, many are no longer allowed i.e. Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 4, etc. It is my understanding that if you already purchased these that you can re-download them. I am also guessing that one could in theory use the PS backup tool to restore games say to the PS Vita, but I have never attempted this.2 points -
Work Monitors for Home Office
goretsky and one other reacted to Emn1ty for a topic
I'm satisfied with my purchase. It's got exactly what I needed. The screen real estate, and not having to deal with Mac spaces go haywire like they do with 2+ external monitors. Also nice benefit is that I can charge my MacBook Pro directly from the monitor. So it's a clean set up all around. Still think it was a little overpriced, but at the end of the day it's been a great tool for every day work.2 points -

Apple's HomePod Mini has an unused temperature sensor
matthiew reacted to pack34 for a topic
What do you mean by "lots"? Can you provide examples? When has this become the new normal? Code, maybe but hardware? Sometimes it boils down to "like-to-have" and "must-have" features. It's common to have some additional sensors in there. Plus, at least in the test-equipment space it's increasingly common to have one board and then be able to turn-on or turn-off features depending on what license you have. Let's you buy the cheapest version and then buy the extra functionality when you need it. In this case it sounds like they thought that they might use it for something but the idea was shot-down or deprioritized and launched without it.1 point -

How is that pro privacy? lol Get news about MS from other sources that Neowin. This is hilarious, someone needs to go and open the teams electron package up. There's about 10 different telemetry options in the configuration... Guess what happens if you turn them off by adjusting the file? They turn themselves back on again. Guess what happens if you make the file read only? Teams will not open. MS invade the crap out of anyone using their services and/or software Non-issue. The privacy options in that file are set from elsewhere and so it's not surprising that the file gets overwritten or if you make it read only that it causes problems. Samsung introduces new monitor lineup with up to 4K resolution
MS Bob 11 reacted to adrynalyne for a topic
I mean, if you turn off a monitor you expect it to turn off its external ports too. You might be better off with a separate hub or dock, but what the monitor does is logical. That works when it's the primary monitor used with desktop PCs. For laptops where an external monitor is occasionally used but a built-in hub is desired, monitor makers can have a setting in it to control whether the hub is also turned off, or two separate power buttons to control the hub and the display. No, I get that, but it’s an odd use-case where a separate dock or hub is the more appropriate device anyway. Turning a monitor off should be the same as any other peripheral, it should power down.1 point -
