I don't recall months being shortened to 21 days 🧐. But I guess if it's for science, we'll have to do it. 😛

A blast from the past, 19 November 2002 when we were leaking info about Windows Longhorn. I had a look around but I can't find anything immediately older but I probably do have stuff in other folders.

Here are some of my oldest screenshots: June 1999. I was about 13 years old. Windows 95's Control Panel on our Packard Bell MultiMedia 9030. April 2003. Unreal Tournament 2003, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Battlefield 1942. They take me back. I'm surprised I was using IrfanView, even back then (I still do, daily), and even more surprised that the logo/icon hasn't changed! I still use Winamp daily, too. June 2003. Looks like I was messing around with Serious Samurize. February 2004. KaZaA Lite, FlashFXP and Nero Burning ROM! March 2004. A photo of my system, including Planet Quake! I was using Planet Unreal (and a map website along the lines of Nali Maps?) a lot more, back then. I never really got into Quake 3 Arena. Check out the size of the DVD player 😂 May 2004. MSN Messenger and Messenger Plus! Google's Froogle! March 2005. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, a Logitech WingMan Gaming Mouse and my Sagem myX-7. Classics.

In keeping with Steven's theme, this is one of my earliest screenshots of Windows XP, using the lovely Luna Element theme from Tornado5. I wanna say this is from 2005/2006.

I never really saved screenshots. All I could find was this old photo from my parents' house in 2002 of my brand new copy of Windows XP installing for the very first time.

30.05.02 - Windows Me with a Windows XP icon pack: 07.03.03 - Final screenshot of our families very first PC before installing some hardware upgrades - I think this was a Blackcomb inspired theme and a program by Stardock to change the mouse pointer to look like a waterdrop: 16.03.04 - Windows 2000 on a college computer - I seem to remember we had to create an interactive Kiosk in Macromedia Director for one of our coursework assignments, I believe you could click on the logo for the consoles and you'd be shown a list of games you could read more about and see various screenshots. Also playing Jazz Jackrabbit 2 from a USB pen drive, at the time we'd discovered our college would allow any .exe to run from usb flash drives (which were relatively new in 2004) so we used to bring small network capable games in and play them in free periods. 21.03.08 - Stress testing the 733mhz overclock on my Core2Duo E4500: I've got quite a few random old screenshots, so I've tried to share a variety from older operating systems.

I noticed this every now and then. It isn't "all" the time. It's just scratching my head. See the ad on the top of the page? That's supposed to be centered, not left orientated. I don't know if that is just a loading error, or.. I do have Ublock Orgin, but whitelisted this site. Firefox 86.0

Then you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem! is capitalism the problem? supply/demand the problem? last time i checked that's how the economy functioned. price theory of value, etc. the problem is covid and not enough fabbing capacity. it's got nothing to do with me.

  26. Yes, just what we need. More £1000+ graphics cards. We definitely don't need any in the sub £200 range at all. No, definitely don't need them.

  27. Yeah the prices are insane. I was lucky and got a Asus RTX 3080 TUF OC on release day, and purchased it with a 15% discount code from my retailer. I see the same card now costs almost 50% more on all retail sites compared to what I paid for it 4-5 months ago, so I could literally resell it used with a good profit, which is just insane. If the increased costs will keep developing in this rate, I'll probably pass on whatever next generation is. The RTX 3080 was already above my comfort level in regards to costs, and honestly, I play my Switch the most, as it has most amount of good games, and also my PS5 gets more attention than my PC with an RTX 3080 ... So ...

  28. Well I didn't see this coming?????? yeah right! It was never going to be made anyway!! So the fact that 3090's are hitting £2,000 plus on retail sites and £2,500-£3,000 on some auctions sites, and the retail sites actually don't have any GPUs to sell. So Nvidia will now use those (3080ti) chips, the ones that they have and make them back into 3090's?? It looks like Nvidia want even more money out of a non existent GPU market!? The CEO of MSI, last week, had a share holders meeting, stating that he was significantly increasing the price of their GPU and motherboard products very soon! Not sure how high the 3090 price can go, but it doesn't look good for next generation GPU, if the prices at the moment, become the recommended release price of say, the 4000 series cards in a couple of years!?

I agree completely, it's gimmicky and pointless to add this branding. I have a oneplus 8 and while I think it's a great device, I think oneplus isn't really a good option going forward.

Potential players: Axiom Space, Bigelow Aerospace (they've re-opened), Sierra Nevada Corp. (SNC), Northrop-Grumman https://spacenews.com/nasa-to-offer-funding-for-initial-studies-of-commercial-space-stations/

  33. These companies responded to the NASA CLD solicitation. Seeing SpaceX is no surprise. Notable absence: Bigelow. SpaceX could, of course, provide transportation but Starship could be a returnable laboratory on its own. If return isn't an issue, such as docking several to a node, Starship HLS (lunar) has the nose docking port and dual airlocks with a common suit prep room. Extra points if there are ways to open the upper and common domes to create more volume.

  34. a little disappointing that it's not the latest Ryzen but given the state of the industry with severe production restraints across all CPU and GPU lines, it's understandable. due to the pandemic, AMD wasn't able to take advantage of the performance gap against Intel. I would still be very happy to get the 4000 series AMD chip in the Surface Pro 8 over the 11th gen Intel equivalent. I know it's not going to happen but hope springs eternal.

And let's not mention the abomination Skype for Business that my company ditched in favor of good old emails. Here's a fun to try out: type in Google "why is Skype" or "why is ms teams" and let it autocomplete +1 Skype used to be good, and I mean it was fine for a bit after the MS Aquisition, but its just slowly gone downhill and can't stand using it anymore, everyone I had/have on it have moved to different platforms now.

OnePlus could have dropped the Hasselblad branding and released the phone $50 cheaper. This phone is a non-buy in my book. iPhone 12 is going roughly for same price after offers, discounts and cashbacks. It has better cameras and colour calibration. Apple also provides 5 yrs of iOS updates while OnePlus treats their old customers as dirt.

  41. What a fanboy. When its apple you'd be up in arms over it. There's no excuse for selling last gen hardware at current gen prices, which they'll do. Surface Duo is a good example of that. Feels like MS doesn't care about AMD. First off, I don't care what Apple does, so I'm indifferent towards them. Second, the moment you decided to label me as a fanboy means I can't take anything you say serious at this point. You guys seem to think hardware is somehow designed, tested, manufactured and shipped at the drop of a hat. As far as prices go, don't buy it, it's really that simple. I don't know how MS feels about AMD, they used to be intel only, the fact they're going to offer more AMD models now than ever before paints a different picture to me. Ah yes, microsoft testing hardware... Maybe if they did that they wouldn't have had faulty displays, faulty batteries, etc. https://www.theverge.com/circu...freezing-shutdowns-problems 25% failure rate after 2 years is batshit crazy, completely unacceptable. Acer hardware is better tested than microsoft's surface.

  42. You saw what they did with IMs a decade ago. Well windows messenger was a decade ago, that was followed by windows messenger, that was followed by skype, that was followed by lynx which is now being followed with teams. These programs either got bloated, had stupid UI decision changes or had useful features removed. Right now in teams, they've removed the ability to full-screen a screen sharing session, yes, an incredibly useful basic feature that was always in it has been removed. And you just debunked the whole issue. This is not Balmer's Microsoft. This is Nadella and Spencer's Microsoft. Lync was never good in the first place, Skype died because it did not change, it did not evolve. Are you actually smoking crack? Skype's direction changed vastly after microsoft took it over, it's unrecognisable from what it was. There was an announcement thread which was posted on here on the microsoft blog whereby it was 10 pages of comments, 10 pages of negative comments, quite a lot criticising skype's new 'SCRUM' system whereby they're meant to please stakeholders i.e. people using the application and all they did was annoy people. They locked that thread with a nonsense excuse about getting hate messages, they did not get hate messages, that was the most pathetic excuse to stop feedback I've seen from microsoft to this date.

  45. Nonsense. That's why you pick a part with the same TDP. You wouldn't magically swap for a part that outputs twice the heat. The cooling components will be designed for a maximum TDP for a period of time with some overhead.

  46. Microsoft reportedly plans to close Discord acquisition by next month

The problem is Microsoft had the dominant IM platform (MSN Messenger) certainly in the UK and a lot of Europe anyway, then purchases Skype which I believe did voice / video better at the time. Microsoft has no idea what to do with either of them after that. Meanwhile iOS / Android have come along and smartphones are now mainstream, WhatsApp becomes the MSN Messenger of the mobile world, Facebook adapts well to mobile with a good app. Both WhatsApp and Facebook gain VOIP and Video calling. Meanwhile Microsoft kills off MSN Messenger, loosing most of its userbase who grew up with MSN to Facebook and WhatsApp. In addition Microsoft still can't figure out how to make a good Skype app, either on the desktop or mobile. In some ways the hard work is done with Discord, all Microsoft need to do is not mess it up, which can be done (Github for example). Discord is massively popular for chat in online communities, works great on the desktop, web and mobile. In addition lots of communities are using Discord bots to enhance the community or game that server is focused on.

  47. Microsoft reportedly plans to close Discord acquisition by next month

You are looking at 2013 Microsoft, not at 2020 Microsoft (yes I'm aware). Mixer was shut down because it was a ghost town. No streamers, no viewers. The technology is not dead. What do you think Microsoft built xCloud on? Skype died because Microsoft let them do whatever they want.

    1 point
  49. Skype and Mixer (previously called Beam) may not belong to the same category, but they were close enough. MS didn't do any good with either of those acquisitions. Skype is pretty much ruined. Mixer was shut down. Now Discord? hmm. I can only imagine they don't want a competitor to get their hands on it - otherwise these guys don't look like they have a solid strategy for their VoIP and IM. It's all "throw things at the wall and see what sticks". Some people may point at "Teams" as a successful communications app here. Again, it is not in the same category as Discord, or Skype and Mixer, but again it's somewhat close. Teams has some good things going about it but in the end it owes its success only to the pandemic. Otherwise that service has been available in the form of "Skype for Business", "Lynk", "Office Communicator", etc for over a decade, and it never really took off the way it was expected to (or else Microsoft wouldn't see the need to rebrand it every now and then).
