  1. Edge and Chrome PWAs will soon look more like native apps

Lol, "just a browser tab", like modern web browser aren't by far the most successful method of cross platform application development that has ever existed. Is VSCode "just a browser tab" to you too?

Oh man, good old old XP times! I loved that OS so much and still remember my excitement while waiting for the installation to finish. XP felt so fresh and modern back then. Oh by the way I'd love to share some Windows XP movies I shared few years ago here at Neowin: Definitely check them out to get that extra 2001 vibe Enjoy!

Ummmm A PWA should have less overhead than using the website in the browser and sometimes even using the app. Regardless, what ancient machine are you using that you are worried about the "overheard" of a PWA or the browser?

  5. AdDuplex: Almost 30% of Windows 10 PCs are now on version 20H2

AdDuplex is a cross-promotion network. A few Microsoft Store apps use AdDuplex's API to display promotions. So, the AdDuplex stats correspond to a tiny population of Windows users who use those apps. It claims to have surveyed 80,000, which is pathetic. As of March 2020, there were one billion active Windows 10 devices.

Yes, further disguise the fact that the crap is just a browser tab with more overhead.

  9. Hello, Um… maybe? I know there was a rush of security software purchases as businesses struggled to equip their employees with laptops for remote work in 2020, which required things like antivirus/antimalware/internet security/endpoint detection and response/{insert vendor term du jour here}, encryption, VPN and backup software (to name a few) but with those new purchases out of the way, budgets should be shifting towards maintenance of those new licenses, plus cybersecurity education for employees. A remote workforce is going to experience more social engineering by nature of not having face to face interactions with colleagues and more likely to think that phone calls, spoofed emails, and so forth are legitimate. While there may be new spending required for security, it is not necessarily going to be a huge percentage over last year's, due to 2020's unique challenges of setting up remote work forces. This is an early April fool yes? Instead of just using a towel like a normal person, you're supposed to stand in this while it directs 100mph hot wind up your a**? How well does it dry things like your head and shoulders? Sorry, I think I'll pass.

I never really saved screenshots. All I could find was this old photo from my parents' house in 2002 of my brand new copy of Windows XP installing for the very first time.

30.05.02 - Windows Me with a Windows XP icon pack: 07.03.03 - Final screenshot of our families very first PC before installing some hardware upgrades - I think this was a Blackcomb inspired theme and a program by Stardock to change the mouse pointer to look like a waterdrop: 16.03.04 - Windows 2000 on a college computer - I seem to remember we had to create an interactive Kiosk in Macromedia Director for one of our coursework assignments, I believe you could click on the logo for the consoles and you'd be shown a list of games you could read more about and see various screenshots. Also playing Jazz Jackrabbit 2 from a USB pen drive, at the time we'd discovered our college would allow any .exe to run from usb flash drives (which were relatively new in 2004) so we used to bring small network capable games in and play them in free periods. 21.03.08 - Stress testing the 733mhz overclock on my Core2Duo E4500: I've got quite a few random old screenshots, so I've tried to share a variety from older operating systems.

Here are some of my oldest screenshots: June 1999. I was about 13 years old. Windows 95's Control Panel on our Packard Bell MultiMedia 9030. April 2003. Unreal Tournament 2003, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Battlefield 1942. They take me back. I'm surprised I was using IrfanView, even back then (I still do, daily), and even more surprised that the logo/icon hasn't changed! I still use Winamp daily, too. June 2003. Looks like I was messing around with Serious Samurize. February 2004. KaZaA Lite, FlashFXP and Nero Burning ROM! March 2004. A photo of my system, including Planet Quake! I was using Planet Unreal (and a map website along the lines of Nali Maps?) a lot more, back then. I never really got into Quake 3 Arena. Check out the size of the DVD player 😂 May 2004. MSN Messenger and Messenger Plus! Google's Froogle! March 2005. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, a Logitech WingMan Gaming Mouse and my Sagem myX-7. Classics.

  20. Feeds.neowin.net not working

About 2 weeks ago, all my Neowin rss feeds stopped opening. I still receive RSS stories, but the linked pages are not working. Just trying to get to feeds.neowin.net results in a "ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED" message. Here's the feed URL I'm using: https://www.neowin.net/news/rss/ And here's an example of a linked story fetched from the feed URL: https://feeds.neowin.net/~r/neowin-main/~3/9GI0NF4DLRE/ I've tried disabling all adblockers as well as temporarily disabling security software with no improvement. Also, this issue occurs on all networks I've tested it on. EDIT: Aaand just like that, it started working again. /sigh

  28. AdDuplex: Almost 30% of Windows 10 PCs are now on version 20H2

That is a good point. Most people do not use Windows Store apps. Most people don't intentionally open Store apps. However, Windows 10 still runs some in the background even when the setting is set to not run them, probably to send telemetry to MS. I wonder if these running background apps are used to share the version information, among other things, with third parties. Holy cow! Conspiracy theory meets technical misunderstanding and weasel words! 1. AdDuplex API sends telemetry to AdDuplex, not Microsoft. 2. Background apps don't run the AdDuplex API. 3. Actually forget background apps; people don't install apps that use AdDuplex in the first place. 4. That telemetry fiasco is long over; Microsoft shared a tool with which one can peer into the transmitted telemetry.

  29. AdDuplex: Almost 30% of Windows 10 PCs are now on version 20H2

Not all of them; just those that suffer from sampling bias, like this one. First, each sample must have sufficient size to be able to represent the entire group. 80,000 out of 1,000,000,000 is too small. That's 0.008%! Second, the sampling must not be selective. For example, it is okay to have a sample of one million Japanese represent the people of Japan, but it is not okay if that sample is taken entirely from the United States. It is okay to have a sample of car owners, but it is not okay if that sample is chosen from the owners of Rolls Royce or Mercedes Benz Maybach; these are super-expensive cars. In this case, AdDuplex cannot and does not account for Microsoft's enterprise customers (i.e. the bulk of Microsoft customers) because of how they install apps. AdDuplex fails on both accounts, aside from its opacity resulting from not sharing its dataset.

  32. What is your definition of "failure"? Both Advanced War and Cold War were considered commercial successes... failure to the people who actually play the game and realized its one of the worst COD games ever made. COD will always sell. Its a franchise that have a huge base that will just buy it hoping its good. Cold War wasn't.

  42. These companies responded to the NASA CLD solicitation. Seeing SpaceX is no surprise. Notable absence: Bigelow. SpaceX could, of course, provide transportation but Starship could be a returnable laboratory on its own. If return isn't an issue, such as docking several to a node, Starship HLS (lunar) has the nose docking port and dual airlocks with a common suit prep room. Extra points if there are ways to open the upper and common domes to create more volume.
