  1. UK politicians face legal challenge over self-destructing messages

    It's a shame we don't have self-destructing politicians!

  2. Apple is set to announce iOS 15 and more on June 7

The glasses are even missing their arms 🤔 That's because apple haven't invented them yet, but when they do it will be innovative and cost £999 each.

  3. Edge and Chrome PWAs will soon look more like native apps

Lol, "just a browser tab", like modern web browser aren't by far the most successful method of cross platform application development that has ever existed. Is VSCode "just a browser tab" to you too?

  5. Apple is launching its independent repair program worldwide

    > In order to qualify, they must also agree to allow an Apple-certified technician to do the repairs. So absolutely nothing will change. People like Louis Rossmann will still not be able to just buy the parts they need Sure, you can become an IRRP, but as long as the AASP fixes the thing itself.

  6. Really? This is awesome. Speaks well of the scope of WinUI if relatively low level apps like those are able to use it. How are these new WinUI versions distributed though? So far, you can't do unpackaged apps, so I'm guessing it's through the Store? I wonder if they'll overhaul WinDbg Preview (Store version) again with WinUI this time.

  9. Edge and Chrome PWAs will soon look more like native apps

Ummmm A PWA should have less overhead than using the website in the browser and sometimes even using the app. Regardless, what ancient machine are you using that you are worried about the "overheard" of a PWA or the browser?

Not really, the AirPods Max is $549. also too much money. 2 things being too much money doesn't mean neither of them are.

  11. Apple is set to announce iOS 15 and more on June 7

People keep saying how new OS makes it slower. Ever thought it's just developers cramming more junk and being sloppy because they are spoiled by performance and capacity of new hardware? Why else Android phones need freaking 12GB of RAM ? For what? Most desktop systems still have 8GB. Yet stupid phones that barely do any multitasking need 12GB? And with so much RAM and so many cores that are fast, why bother optimizing, just throw more RAM at the problem. And since people continue using same apps that are becoming fatter and sloppier, it seems like OS is getting slower. Where in fact it's the apps running on it. It's a fake perception by users.

I don't have anything before 2004. The oldest I have is a Windows XP desktop screenshot, and screenshots from Windows Longhorn 4074.

Yup, I was just coming to say that Louis Rossmann has taught me not to trust Apple on this.

  15. Apple is launching its independent repair program worldwide

At that point, they might as well declare those repair shops Apple authorized... They are still required to let only an Apple authorized technician perform the repairs.

  24. Eh, in part a different breed. I'm speaking to myself here, too, but I feel like those of us who spend our time sitting here reading tech blogs and arguing about petty crap in the comments section are hardly the same type of people who have an interest in actually doing this sort of thing.

  28. Sony confirms PlayStation Store closure on PS3, PSP, and PS Vita

To be fair, you won't be able to buy new content, but the content you already own will still be downloadable. (Until they decide otherwise) People upset about this, did everyone forget that either digital or physical, if the online part of many games is shutdown you can't play either way. For example, what good is that physical copy of Anthem? Many more games won't run offline as time goes on.

Mine always works. could be just certain display adapters, but I see this a bunch because when I help someone setup their PC windows update usually installs a display driver and then the issue pops up. Possibly. I can list the ones I've not seen it on; small sampling. GTX 1070 2080 Super Vega 64 RX 580 HD 630

  34. Windows 10 is getting all-new icons in the File Explorer

You mean the standards driven emoji updates Apple, Google and Microsoft include with each update? https://unicode.org/emoji/charts/full-emoji-list.html I agree though, Windows File Explorer is in dire need of a decent modernisation and simplification to match the rest of the OS. Win10X looks to be doing that, but it's a long way off by the look of things.. No, I wasn't thinking about Emoji's themselves. I was thinking that of all the tech companies out there, only Apple seems to be seeing new Emoji's as "Front Page News" in their software update logs; as if those new Emojis were groundbreaking new features.

  35. Windows 10 is getting all-new icons in the File Explorer

What a waste of resources. They just changed them. And they look ugly as hell. If I want crappy UI, I'll install Ubuntu or something. There's a buttload of stuff to fix in Windows, instead of playing with icons with every third update. Current icons are good enough.

  39. Unfortunately, it's their business and their vans, so if you want the job, sign the contract. Almost makes you start wishing all this technology was never invented, doesn't it? It's actually a bit more complex than that. They're not Amazon vans and you don't even technically work for Amazon. You work for one of their local distribution partners. These distribution partners contract with Amazon and either lease the vans from Amazon or own there own vehicles out right. https://logistics.amazon.com/ With all that said, yeah, its a complex situation and it isn't all that different from how FedEx drivers are treated and work. UPS drivers are better unionized and don't have these problems. I personally believe UPS provides better service because of it. Also, Amazon Flex delivery service is a different service that you can work for but that is just straight up gig economy job and has a whole other layer of complexity to it all.

  40. Uh, no, I'd be pretty surprised if NVIDIA has secured enough 5nm manufacturing capacity for this — and even if they had, I'd be surprised if they would use it on Switch chips. When the Switch came out, it used the Maxwell architecture even though Pascal was available (they started a generation behind "current" ... they're going to move to a generation ahead?). It's probably derived from Volta (basically Turing without the ray tracing stuff). That has been previously rumored, and Volta has tensor cores which are what is needed to enable DLSS.

  41. Yeah, I have no idea how anyone is using Safari. They are fairly far behind on any measurement of standards compliance...HTML5 Test, Can I use, and now this. Well on iOS you are forced to use that garbage browser, and it can't be updated independently of the OS. Horrible design, horrible browser I hate Safari just like the next person, however I don't think you're forced to use it. I use Edge on my iPhone SE quite happily, makes it much easier! Sadly I still need to use IE on my work computer for a few things, but I seem to be one of the few in the office with Chromium Edge, which again is my default. I am so keen for those final websites to be updated to be usable with a browser made in the past decade. You're not using edge, you're using a safari webview. Same with all iOS web browsers, it is against apple app store T&C to have a web browser on iOS that does NOT use the in-built safari webview

  45. Apple's HomePod Mini has an unused temperature sensor

What do you mean by "lots"? Can you provide examples? When has this become the new normal? Code, maybe but hardware? Sometimes it boils down to "like-to-have" and "must-have" features. It's common to have some additional sensors in there. Plus, at least in the test-equipment space it's increasingly common to have one board and then be able to turn-on or turn-off features depending on what license you have. Let's you buy the cheapest version and then buy the extra functionality when you need it. In this case it sounds like they thought that they might use it for something but the idea was shot-down or deprioritized and launched without it.

  48. Am I wrong in remembering how lots of people wanted discord on the xbox not too long ago? Compared to mixer, which is more for content creators, discord fits better with how MS has expanded Xbox beyond the console. It could easily be the main chat platform for Xbox console, PC and mobile going forward, it's a much better fit than trying to take on twitch with mixer was. Chat/Party chat is still a integral part of the gaming experience.
