It only supports apps using the MSIX packaging system right now. Yes, but important thing to note is that it doesn't mean you must distribute through the Store. A Windows 10 user can still double click on an MSIX to install it. Yeah, but I don't think I've ever seen anything using it. I have to wonder if I ever will. It sounds really nice. Some of the newer MS apps/tools I think come as MSIX packages now. Or I could be confusing MSIX with MSI, but I'm not sure what the exact difference between the two is? MSI is just a Windows Installer package that has been around for decades. Its purpose is solely installation and uninstallation. Apps can still leave behind garbage by not uninstalling properly. MSIX is a packaging technology that is responsible for not only one click installs/uninstalls but also virtualizing the registry for that packaged app. This way, each MSIX app gets its own copy of the registry (not a full registry, just the parts it uses), so it can work as expected without affecting the rest of the system. It has additional advantages like delta/partial updates and allowing Windows to optimize disk space by keeping one copy of shared files.2 points -

Most of my stuff is on a network drive, which gets backed up nightly to another network drive and monthly gets backed up to an external hard (just a 3.5 inch HDD I put in a sata dock) drive and then gets swapped with an external drive I keep in my safety deposit box. Then once a week my most import directory as well as my thunderbird profile (first created in 2004) gets backed up to two (Usually disconnected) usb flash drives. Photos get backed up to google photos from my phone, but every once and a while i Plug my phone into my computer and copy the contents of the photos taken to two external hard drives. My QuickBooks gets backed up nightly to the network drive as well as being backed up to everything mentioned above well as nightly to a flash drive plugged into the QuickBooks machine. Versioning is set up to keep a good hand full of backed-up versions. It's also encrypted and backed up nightly to an online backup.1 point -

I guess every cloud has a silver lining. (And Microsoft is a cloud company.) Beam/Mixer trying to take on Twitch was always a huge uphill battle, look at youtube gaming and FB. To date they're not even close. Sure the content grew, but viewership didn't. We have to take into account human nature when it comes to some things. There has to be a very big, compelling, reason to get people to change their set ways. After years of using and viewing twitch, getting people to switch to one of the others is very hard. Just like it's hard to get video content creators to move from Youtube to one of the others, it just doesn't happen. WhatsApp for example, until the whole FB privacy BS, you never saw a large chunk of people leave it. That was a big enough reason to make them though. In the end while MS may have killed Mixer, because lets face it, it was limited to Xbox specifically, while Twitch draws in everything, the tech behind it, I'm 100% sure, is still alive and kicking in other projects. As far as software goes, they're not totally losing out when a app/service fails, as long as the tech/IP behind it is good and is used in a future successful project.1 point -

I completely agree (to state the obvious). even $100 or so is already really pushing it for headphones as I figure for the common person, around $50-ish tops is more realistic (but 'maybe' as much as $100 or so). but at $500 that's a massive inefficient use of $ in general. hell, I figure even with someone who's got plenty of $, even then I can't see more than $200-300 MAX. because after a certain point it's just flat out wasted $ because I am sure one can get quality headphones for a fraction of that $500 that are roughly just as good, or at least not enough of a difference to justify paying hundreds of $ more. but I suspect a lot of high $ audio equipment (like after a certain price point) comes back to people 'thinking' there is a difference more than them actually hearing a difference. even if there is a difference, it's probably so small, it's no where near enough of a difference to justify the major price differences.1 point -

complain to developpers for using javascript or xamarin to write their iOS apps instead of going full native native iOS apps runs smooth, and 3rd-party devs that embrace native tooling also produce great apps, the ones that suck are the crossplatform ones, they use lowest common denominator at the cost of performance that is what happen when we let javascript devs or windows people who want to target iOS program for resource constrained devices in a non-native way look at windows, nothing native anymore, only electron everywhere, even microsoft products, full of garbage web tech (*cought* team, *cought* skype, *cought* mail) Stupid rant is stupid. Apple is set to announce iOS 15 and more on June 7
Krieg reacted to Matthew S. for a topic
Well, that kindof makes sense. New software will always be heavier. But there's a very fine line between planned obsolescence and actual software just getting more complex... Based on Apple's track record, it seems likely they are doing a little of both. I used an iPhone 7 up until a few months ago. I will say that its performance was very different than when it was new. I can't say for sure it was caused by iOS updates, but by the end, I would have situations where the phone would take up to 1 second to open the message app after pressing on a notification. May not sound like much, but when it is all day long it is very noticeable. Could be the size of your message database, try purging some older messages (I have this bad habbit of keeping all my old texts)1 point -

Cyberpunk 2077 update 1.2 delivers a massive number of fixes and optimizations
THE END reacted to Nuno-Relvao for a topic
See it first before believing , CDPR list all that fixes because it's what has been reported ,not because they were really aware or ready to revise all those bugs. I bet the game it's still crappy as hell , mainly because the biggest problem now is that no matter how good they try to make it , it will never go against the expectations they created for it. Sincerely IMHO it's a good game , but not that brilliant. Good story etc but lacks much more compelling narrative to it in order to allow to continue this. As an example GTA V Wich I totally understand the comparisons out there is much better in almost all aspects , withe exceptions to graphics , but we are talking of a dev difference in years.1 point -

Microsoft reportedly plans to close Discord acquisition by next month
matthiew reacted to +InsaneNutter for a topic
The problem is Microsoft had the dominant IM platform (MSN Messenger) certainly in the UK and a lot of Europe anyway, then purchases Skype which I believe did voice / video better at the time. Microsoft has no idea what to do with either of them after that. Meanwhile iOS / Android have come along and smartphones are now mainstream, WhatsApp becomes the MSN Messenger of the mobile world, Facebook adapts well to mobile with a good app. Both WhatsApp and Facebook gain VOIP and Video calling. Meanwhile Microsoft kills off MSN Messenger, loosing most of its userbase who grew up with MSN to Facebook and WhatsApp. In addition Microsoft still can't figure out how to make a good Skype app, either on the desktop or mobile. In some ways the hard work is done with Discord, all Microsoft need to do is not mess it up, which can be done (Github for example). Discord is massively popular for chat in online communities, works great on the desktop, web and mobile. In addition lots of communities are using Discord bots to enhance the community or game that server is focused on.1 point -

That might be true but at this point it gives them a solid cross platform chat service ready to go with a strong presence in the gaming community. Now that they're going to open up party chat and take it out behind live gold, it's cheaper to buy a service that does what you want on multiple gaming platforms than to build your own.1 point -

Samsung builds industry's first 512GB DDR5 memory module
matthiew reacted to dismuter for a topic
The original news release by Samsung: "Delivering more than twice the performance of DDR4 at up to 7,200 megabits per second (Mbps), the new DDR5 will be capable of..." I think that's not correctly worded. It should be mega-transfers per second (MT/s), as in Samsung claims that they will have chips at speed ratings up to DDR5-7200. 1 transfer being 64 bits, that gives 57,600 MB/s per module, which in JEDEC terms would be PC5-57600. Too bad Neowin, Engadget and possibly others didn't bother correcting/clarifying.1 point -
