  2. Microsoft is reportedly reviving the Microsoft Store with a new UI and policies

That's great news. Funny enough, I made a video about this same stuff 2 weeks ago, but at the time, it was in the context of "what Microsoft would have to do to revive the store." Though, I didn't cover any UI changes...because although that might be helpful, is not a major factor. It's all about the apps in the store. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmPb3xmi7F0

  6. I like the idea of the store evolving into more of an app hub or package management system vs the mobile OS app store model. I think some of these changes are a good step.

  7. Are you going to give a few weeks to see whether you like the re-design after using it for a bit? I've used it a bit. It's not bad enough to flip tables over, but I can't see any way that it's superior to the existing design. A half step back, no steps forward. Now if they also made it so Firefox wouldn't eat 10GB of memory when a few tabs are open for a day or two, there would be some carrot at the end of the rope to sweeten the deal. Like how losing the XUL extensions came alongside huge performance gains. Right now, it's all stick and no carrot.

  8. Interesting to see them spell out NT as "New Technology" decades into its life. Even if in the context of NTFS.

  9. This is a terrible idea. Nvidia has shown how it will behave. Just look at their tactics with how they've handled competition in the GPU space. It's enough of an indicator of how they'll attempt to operate with ARM. I say block it, we'll all be better for it. Yeah Nvidia isn't the kind of company you want buying ARM's going off the tactics and lock-downs they use on the PC with gpu's, you can only imagine the kind of games they would do if they own ARM's, so much so that it could push many rivals to look for alternatives like Risc-V.

  16. Microsoft is reportedly reviving the Microsoft Store with a new UI and policies

Apps are one thing, but Windows Store right now just does not work properly 75% of the time. Also MS needs to get their apps there. Office Enterprise, Edgium, VSCode, MS Authenticator for Windows desktop etc If it got integrated with Winget for WIN32 apps (something like ChocolateyGUI is for Chocolatey) that would be perfect (of course show package with author's permission)

  19. Microsoft is reportedly reviving the Microsoft Store with a new UI and policies

OK... How about some simple changes? Why can't I still not see when an app was last updated or what version it is? How about listing if the app is an unpackaged Win32, packaged Win32, or UWP? I have mixed feeling about allowing apps to use their own commerce platform. I have no problems using Google for all my apps purchases on mobile. In fact, it probably has encouraged me to buy more apps. Who wants to hand their CC over to dozens of different developers/payment systems? If an particular app is an unpackaged Win32 program, uses it's own update system, and I pay for it via a 3rd-party payment platform why even install it from the Microsoft Store? I guess can see the Microsoft Store for installing all things Microsoft...

  20. I imagine the problem here isn't the amount of bad apps, it's the amount of good ones. The Play Store is filled with garbage apps, too, but no one cares because the good ones are also there and come up first. On Windows, it's not hard to find the garbage by accident. you could be right about that. definitely stands out more when the actual quality apps are MIA

  22. The Lockdown - Stuff you bought - No Buyers Remorse

Switched from my iPhone XR to the Samsung Galaxy S21 a few weeks back. Got my GPD XD Plus last year which I do the majority of my gaming on now. Great N64 emulator. Also play full PC games on it with my Shadow subscription. Got a Raspberry Pi to use as a media server, found out it's gigabit ethernet port doesn't actually get full speed though and there are some other speed limiting bugs for a couple apps so I've already replaced that with a refurbished HP EliteDesk 800 G2 which runs great for what I need as a mini home server. Also upgraded to the Versa 3 last year as well.

  25. Android 12 may auto-hibernate your unused apps to free up storage

It probably adds up over time? Even windows, iirc, gets rid of temp files automatically after a default time period, which I think is 1 month. Hibernating unused apps is fine to have though. I've seen lots of people who never actually close anything on their phone. At leas the system should be smart about it and free up some resources.

Are you going to give a few weeks to see whether you like the re-design after using it for a bit? I have been using proton for months now. I tried to create my own userChrome script to make it look much as Quantum, but its too much of a hassle. I just gave up and switching to Edge.

  34. Really?! If their Tegra chips are anything to go by then yes I think so. I don't foresee them locking ARM down anymore than it already is either; if anything they may open it up more than this current company I know nothing about. Time will tell though. History doesn't really show Tegra taking things to a new level though.

  36. Firefox 89 to receive longer beta cycle to prep for Proton

I really don't understand why they insist on constantly making pointless UI changes, especially ones that nobody asked for or like. If they want to do this crap, put it into a theme or something, don't force it on all the users who are happy with the way their browser looks/works already.

I believe you can buy them with Paypal now also, they added it a while back. Yeah you can in the US, my point was why have both apps in the first place, which both need parallel development/maintenance/accounts etc.

How does Microsoft expect to motivate other devs to utilize the store if they don't even put most of their own stuff in there? ...
    1 point
  39. Agree, they need to police and clean up a lot of stuff. However, in context, especially WP - it was NEVER even close to Android or iOS for non-sense crap. Android is in a class of its own, but iOS is also plagued with crap. Microsoft can and should do better than Google and Apple - especially considering their ability to screen WinRT code and monitor changes after deployment. The Microsoft Store is fairly clean compared to the Google Play store for sure but that may be more because few people actually use it. Why would bad actors bother targeting it? LOL

  46. Sony reverses PlayStation 3 and Vita store closure decision

Just last week i ended up buying the Sly Cooper Collection on the Vita for $15. After looking for the physical release on either the Vita or PS3, the Vita cart came w/ the 1st two games only. The 3rd had to be downloaded w/ a code which has expired. I then looked for the physical PS3 release, and it was well over $70 on various sites. Perfect example of why the Stores should remain open.
