  1. YouTube kicks off PSA campaign series promoting COVID-19 vaccine

Eh, not necessarily. The vaccination was rushed through and has only been out for a short amount of time. No one can claim with certainty that there's no chance it could cause some kind of delayed health problem. And whose to say the virus won't mutate in a year and render the current vaccine ineffective? "Survival of the fittest" applies to the virus also. Personally I'm taking a "wait and see" approach. I'll probably get the vaccine eventually, but I'm certainly not rushing out to do it. While it is true that there is no way to ever physically test how a vaccine or medication will interact with every single person's biology, preexisting conditions, and other things in their bodies, these vaccines have been pretty exhaustively tested, and are now showing their efficacy without undesirable effects on 99.X% of the population. Literally hundreds of millions of people have been vaccinated without much more than sore arms, fever, headache, and/or tiredness for a couple days at most. Your hesitation with long term effects can just as easily be applied to the virus itself. There is no long term data on what it will do in the human body. Beyond the long-haul symptoms that many people still suffer with after months or even a year in some cases, there is the issue of dormant viruses. The chickenpox virus lays dormant in your system for decades. It comes back 60 years later as shingles. There are other viruses, such as herpes and HIV that also have prolonged periods of dormancy, and never leave the body. For example, HPV results in cervical cancer for women. If you catch COVID-19, you are taking a huge risk that you may have severely debilitating symptoms down the road, we really have no idea what this virus does long term. To me, that is the greater of the two risks.

I would recommend running the following commands from an elevated command prompt (type cmd in the start menu and right click run as admin: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth sfc /scannow After SFC runs, look in your windows\logs\cbs folder and open cbs.log annd scroll to the bottom and see if it found and repaired any system files.

These lame marketing/paper launches for video cards needs to stop until they have enough supply or they can at least cut the scalpers out. Though as we've seen they don't care if scalpers buy up everything, a sale is a sale to the hardware makers even if the bad press hits them, it doesn't last long and they just keep going with business as usual.

The Play Store has a history of allowing apps that include malware https://www.neowin.net/news/camscanner-removed-from-the-play-store-due-to-detection-of-malware-is-now-back although they are usually found quickly it is not always the case. This is also the case with browser extensions that can inject javascript or replace ads on a web page with their own which has also slipped through the checks. It mainly applies to smaller lesser known apps, but that can also happen with an app that suddenly takes off and goes viral and the developer decides to monetize through malicious coding (like injecting ads) or perhaps with a crypto miner. What I am saying is that it is always possible, if you are installing lesser known apps, maybe have a look around online about what people are saying about it.

  13. Cellphones and viruses

Hello, The chance of coming across an actual, bona-fide computer virus on Android is vanishingly small, just as it is with Windows. Parasitic computer viruses—that is, actual recursively-self-replicating-programs-whose-children-and-children's-children-are-possibly-evolved-copies, are actually pretty rare these days. On the Windows side of things, just a handful of families are left (Ramnit, Sality, Virut, etc.) and even between all their variations, account for about a single-digit, percentage-wise, of what security companies see on a daily basis. Simply put, the parasitic methods of propagation used by computer viruses are used less and less these days as criminals have found other mechanisms to do what they want. What I suspect you are really asking about is malware (a portmanteau of malicious and software), which encompasses all the various forms of replicating and non-replicating software such as trojan horses, multi-stage downloaders, banking trojans, cryptocurrency miners, ransomware and other things you might not want on your computer (adware, spyware, and so forth). There's quite a bit of that for Windows, and for Android as well. What is a growing problem on Android is what Google calls unwanted software. As the name implies, it is software which does things the user expressly would not want the software to do, if they understood/were aware of what it was doing. This includes all sorts of unauthorized tracking, click-fraud, aggressive advertising and all sort of other privacy-invasive behaviors that 15-20 years ago were common to see in adware and spyware on Windows. These are the kinds of malicious and abusive programs that are cause for concern for most folks. There are also things like banking trojans as well as commercial spyware used by nation-states, but those tend to be a bit rarer due to limiting factors on whom they can affect or the cost of purchasing them. Google's stance on this is fairly clear (see this, this, this, this, this, and this for more information). And Google does make efforts to keep its ecosystem clean (e.g., Google Play Protect), but when you don't control device manufacturers, things like this, this, this, and this can happen, and that's without including scams where the user is tricked into installing a malicious app. But, it's a big ecosystem, and stuff does happen to get through sometimes. So, I suppose the real question here is, "How worried should I be about this?" followed by "What should I do to protect myself?" Well, the answer to the first is that you should be a little concerned—not to panic about it, but just to be aware of the risks, which leads to taking steps to mitigate them. The good news is that there are lots of security programs out there for Android in the Google Play Store, and you can certainly download various ones from reputable developers, and use them to see if they find anything. Most programs are distributed under a freemium business model (or shareware, as it used to be called in the PC world) where you can install it, run it for a few days, weeks or perhaps a month, and then purchase a license, or uninstall it and try another until you find one you like. There are also many independent organizations which test Android security software, such as AV-Comparatives, AV-TEST, MRG-Effitas, and SE Labs, to name a few. They have been testing desktop software software for years, so the names may be somewhat familiar from those activities. While they are no substitute for trying a program yourself and verifying it works well, they can be useful in helping you select which programs to evaluate. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

  14. Wait. "The organizations also hope that this lawsuit will signal a warning to other counterfeit businesses currently operating on the platform." If they know exactly which accounts sell counterfeit goods why are they not shut down immediately? Facebook must be making too much money from selling the counterfeiters ads, to stop the criminals even when they know what is happening. Wow.

  19. How? Unless you listen to the same album over and over or older albums, the average 'new' CD is around a tenner. 1 CD = £10 All the "CD's" you could ever want (Spotify): £11 a month Depends on the music you listen to, I do not listen to much modern music, most of it is complete rubbish, older CDs are normally sold in collections and are cheap, no 1 in the Uk at the moment is someone called Lil Nas X,, i heard it and to be honest, it is flipping awful. See this is where you are also showing your age. There is TONS of modern music that kicks ass but without a music service you will never know about it because your only exposure to modern music is the radio which I agree, plays rubbish. At least you are in the UK where BBC Radio 6 has some good radio shows that span a wide variety of genres that never approach top 40's trash. Amazon Music is the worst for discovery. Spotify is much better for finding new music.

  20. I can't tell you the number of NEW artists I've discovered while streaming. Better than listening to commercial FM radio, which seems to only play "top 10" over and over again. With the like button, after a while, it starts adding "similar" artists, which has increased my play list big time. And I go all the way back to 8 track tape days!

  21. Why? Also, there are no problems. The 'plunge' is a dip, that you buy. And it's normal, not the first time. Lastly, every market "crashed" after this, not just crypto. Funny how whenever it dips people spell 'doom'. Due to nonsense sell of so much mining, hardware and electricity. Government should be just banning all crypto which allows mining. One: that's just pure nonsense Two: It's impossible to ban computers used for mining given the obvious and add the fact that crypto itself can't be banned or directly regulated. That's the entire point of it being decentralized. Just like government can say that you gotta report to IRS to cyrpto exchanges, they can also order them to be shut down or can ban exchange of the crypto which renders the entire nonsense of crypto useless if that's what they want. If you think crypto is completely outside of government control and can't be stopped if they wanted to, than you are dreaming. I think you are the one who is dreaming. You sound like a boomer who doesn't understand how basic cryptography works, let alone how crypto currency works. How's that? i wasn't referring to you. I was referring to the whole "the government can ban crypto" etc. sure they can try to forbid US companies to accept it as a form of payment (although I am not sure that would even stand in a court), but I think we are way past the point they could do that and not face strong opposition.

  22. Thank you for this comment. There is a concerted effort from World media to malign Mr. Modi. They are drawing comparisons with Trump. However that is further from truth. They selectively hide (or falsely report) facts. For example, a leaked document by an auditor mentions how central govt had sanctioned funds to start various oxygen generation plants back in Dec 2020, but only fractional were operational after 4 months due to lethargy of respective state govts. Like Greta Thunberg toolkit exposé, a new toolkit is at work here where several Twitter accounts (bots or real) are tweeting in sync, false and unverifiable news causing trending of fake news. But Twitter being highly leftist organisation, it is to be seen who wins. ^^ Oh my god, seems the Modi-bots are on Neowin too 😂😂😂.

  23. Apple's rumored M2 processor reportedly hits mass production

Catch up? Again, you do realize the AMD Mobile processors are more energy efficient and faster, right? (There are solid numbers out there that demonstrate this. When testing outside of the Apple optimized 'featured products' - AMD gains a bigger lead. Intel is also not far behind here, if much. Even Apple is clear about this, with their primary comparisons to the much slower Intel from the Macbook Air, etc.) *There also is some side stories that show Apple is fudging the numbers a bit with the silicon catering to performance benchmarks. They already admit that the M1 is optimized for software they use in their testing metrics, like Photoshop, etc. Meaning those specific numbers are not general computing performance. --- Just something everyone needs to be aware a bit here, as the M1 is really Good, but not a generational shift as much reporting makes it out to be. Also note the onboard RAM and other design factors that help performance but at the expense of functionality and features. This includes PCIe bus device support, expansion, etc.

I don't discard it may turn into a microchip eventually though that's kinda beside the point. Watch goalposts move from "that's crazy talk, ain't gonna happen" to "it's for your own good". Amazing they didn't do this with the flu vaccine! You are a class act, that's for sure. Gee, I knew we would get from the "you're crazy" part to the "well yeah sure but it's for your own good, you bad, bad person" part eventually, I didn't knew it would be instantaneous. When intelligence butts against something that stupid, the reaction happens pretty quickly.

  26. Yep, that's the case with all the Mac's I have acquired. I tried using one of the Mac's that I used that Hack to install catalina on. Went to the App store thinking because I already had it, it might let me redownload it. But it bombed out with some error. It could be, because the installation was a hack job. I realized if you had access to a mac which already had the installer, it's possible to copy the folder from the app directory usb flash drive and then put it on the older system to create the usb flash drive. Which is why i'm now creating a collection of those installers. But god damnit apple, it shouldn't have be this complicated! I also know you can do an internet install by holding down some keys on bootup, but I think it only gives you the factory version of the OS. When I tried it on my 2011 iMac, I think it downloaded Lion.
    1 point
  27. glad it's pretty easy to install newer versions of macOS on older models. there's a hacker dev that hosts a script that unlocks the ISO for older models. the only downside that they haven't solved yet is for models that have dedicated AMD graphics they lose hardware acceleration unless you do an extra step to switch to just the internal graphics. I haven't updated to Big Sur yet but I have a early 2011 MBP at home running High Sierra. It's not my main machine but I do mess with it from time to time and it runs just fine on newer versions. edit: the script covers for downloading the installer too; it uses a direct URL from Apple's server to download the installer then patches it. Then it's up to you to put on CD/USB as desired.

  43. I really dislike this sort of comment. If there was an issue in the article, just report it. No need to start accusing people of “political motivation” (which is usually just code for “they said something that disagrees with my politics”). That’s why there is so much antagonism in the world. try the nice way first
    1 point
  44. If the issue was with the accounts as a whole, why not request the accounts be removed instead of the individual tweets? As for the individual tweets, those that posted statistics - such as one noting 200,000 new cases a day and a struggling healthcare system - seem to be posting the same information that other news outlets are reporting. So does that mean all the news outlets are wrong with that information? There does seem to be political motivation, but it appears to be in the request to have those individual tweets removed, not in news outlets reporting the request for them to be hidden.

  46. Honestly, even when they did, it was kinda whack. Friend of mine sent his off to Samsung for what should've been a $150 return on it... Think they ended up giving him $50 for it because they claimed the screen had a pink line going down the center of it, which it didn't when he had it. ...which you'd think would be their fault, but I guess they're under the guise that because my friend used it, it's his fault somehow. Completely bogus. Haha the pink line thing was their fault I think it affected the Galaxy S7 series of phones and they had to honor a lot of returns and repairs. But yeah trade-ins to phone manufacturers or cell providers where you have to send off and hope for the best are dodgy. I much rather rely on 2nd hand trade in like rebuy (who have a reputation to uphold and worry about) or on local type eBay and then come pick it up, see it working kind of deal, cash in hand.
