Ah yes, the ole' "things were better in the olden days, we should go back to that" argument. I've been working with computers for 40 years and not a year goes by that I don't observe someone making a similar argument to what you're saying here. If your Mac counterparts were to be believed in 2004, things were better in the Mac OS 8 / 9 days, too. The graybeards -hated- Mac OS X and its goofy visual style. It wasn't "serious". The multitasking "got in the way". A lot of flexibility in direct hardware programming was lost. And of course, FreeDOS exists because there were a ton of people who couldn't let go of their fondness for MS-DOS and wanted their computing life to continue down that road. The people who made it started chasing after adding multitasking, 32-bit support, USB and so on. We could talk about Commodore, too. See that thing recently where someone souped up a C-64 do to Bitcoin mining? Hilarious. Retro technology is fun. Sure. But we shouldn't collectively go back to it and stay there forever, just because we look back on it fondly. Microsoft has sunk ten full years of development into the Windows kernel since Windows 7 SP1. The list of changes and improvements is enormous. There's absolutely no well-grounded, technologically valid reason to throw all that way. If you don't believe me, grab the Windows Internals 7th edition book by Mark Russinovich, and you'll learn very quickly that fundamentally, Windows is still very much the same OS as it has been for 20 years, but the structure and organization of everything has improved. Now, if you don't like the Windows GUI, that's understandable, it's still a bit of a mess. I have the same problem with macOS Big Sur.... they sunk a ton of work into visually refreshing it, but it still has a major identity crisis and they've messed up many Mac fundamentals in the pursuit of bringing the iOS market to the desktop. I personally vastly prefer Mac OS X Snow Leopard.... so much so that I have it running on a 15-year-old iMac in the kitchen. So, yes, I get you -- but the better thing to do is to stop obsessing over the past and learn how to use the modern tools correctly. Inflexibility won't help you in the long run.12 points -

This really should not be a social media poll. Millions of documents will be generated with these fonts by users who just do not change from the default, and millions of people will have to read those documents to get information and knowledge. A font that is hard to read for some groups of people will effectively impede their access to information for over a decade. Picking the default Office font should be done responsibly, with dyslexic and low-vision people in mind, and backed by actual science on the cognitive load required to read, to make as many of those documents easy to read for as many people as possible. As with most topics, we should trust science instead of social media opinions.3 points -

No. Just MS's obsession with "change for the sake of change." MS just can't leave well enough alone. Their decade long history of mucking around with what used to be a good solid reliable OS is a great illustration. If you take this stupid argument to its logical conclusion, then Microsoft should've never released anything after Windows 1.0. After all, why keep "mucking around"? After all, we all make perfect choices the first time around, and should never EVER revise our thinking based on changing circumstances or new information......... right?3 points -

Tax write-off as a bare minimum. Between 2010 and 2015, Facebook had pre-tax U.S. profits of $14.8 billion, on which it paid 16.5 percent in U.S. taxes —less than half the official U.S. corporate tax rate. Technically: selection, profile and discrimination do the same. The only difference is discrimination is "negative" because it considers some not-so-clear concepts such as race, nationality and sex, but also, cultural level, education level, economic level and such, so the line that separates those concepts is thin and it could vary depending on the case. Also, the solution to discrimination is more discrimination such as mocking people by their race (white), nationality (not foreigners) and sex (heteros and mainly males) but in this case, it is not discrimination, selection or profile but justice. In this case, it makes sense not to offer Tesla to people of low incomes but some people could consider it discrimination where the statistics (profile) say this group of people don't buy Tesla. * Employment: avoid targeting people that don't fit some specific educational level. * Housing: avoid targeting people that are unable to pay for it. Both make sense in the concept of companies don't want to hire somebody that does not know the job but it still could be considered discrimination or sell/rent houses to families that are unable to pay for it. IMHO, we will never solve the problem of discrimination if we don't have clear and fair rules. i.e. every measure could be considered discrimination, it depends on how loud are you.2 points -
Microsoft Teams surpasses 145 million daily active users
dontbeevil and one other reacted to adrynalyne for a topic
But how many of these users have a choice? If they work for a company that insists that they use Slack/gsuite/jira..., then what can they do? You know full well that most companies will use Microsoft due to the integration of Office. i understand what you are saying, but MS is trying to show off about how many people are using teams, if most companies use Teams instead of the others than they are going to a higher amount of users. Myself i think it is all a load of poop, if these people are outside a building, I can see the point, in that these services makes it easier to communicate and send files and other stuff across. Also remember we are in a middle of a so-called pandemic, so more companies will be using these services. When/if we ever get back to some normality, lets see how quickly these use of these services will reduce. If you are in the same building, then i see no use for these services, and that includes Yammer, “So-called pandemic.” 🙄2 points -

I like how people point fingers at Apple when they are just playing by the system. If yall want to be salty, someone gotta change the system. Otherwise, they are just playing by the rules. I call that smart THESE COMPANIES CREATED THIS RIGGED TAX EVASION SYTEM by paying off politicians in the US, Ireland, etc. in the first place. How do you not know this? If I pay off the judges and politicians to rule that "murder is not illegal" and then I shoot someone, how is that not still wrong in every sense of the word? I got away with it, because I paid off everyone, but I still killed someone, right?! Using your "logic", I was just "smart" in how I committed murder, right?! This money has been stashed by Apple for DECADES now. Part of the deal is that we give them infrastructure to ply their trades and wares AND THEY PAY TAXES on the profits. They have reneged on that deal, as many corporations have, for decades now. And WE'VE been paying the bill by paying back the loans and interest needed to cover this shortfall, ergo the annual budget deficit and the national debt. So, Apple is getting profits (no problem) from all of us and infrastructure from all of us that we have to pay off coming and going...and paying nothing in return.2 points -

M1 is pretty damn good. I will be interested how they get more performance from the SOC. Is it going to be improvements/tinkering of the components that offer the performance increase (which supports the tech behind Apple Silicon) or just throwing more cores increases the performance. Most likely a combo of both but I'm interested to see how it comes out.2 points -
