  1. Why did you put it that way? The two sentences mean the same thing. Spy Beef already explained that is normally how media posts on the subject present the information. What the % the store takes on the sales. He is right and he is almost never right.

  2. Why did you put that way? Just say Microsoft is taking 12% instead of 30%. That's the typical way app store cuts have been described in the media.

  5. Sorry, you confused all that with people allowing law makers to pass laws on things they don't understand thereby making the Internet a steaming pile of crap to use, because they don't understand things and just end up overcomplicating the issue and making it so sites like Neowin have to implement these lawful popups by law. Maybe you remember that the EU is still pursuing a law that would essentially ban memes (EU Articles 11 and 13), because some politicians can't take being made fun of. On the face of it, It attempted to outlaw copyright infringement on the web, (so you can't use Getty images to make your meme about how dumb Bojo is) but those sets of laws actually made it easier for people to infringe on other people's copyright because they now have a grace period and the complainant has to jump through all sorts of hoops to prove their copyright was infringed upon. This is why we see so many crap Chinese websites literally copying our and other proper websites news 1:1 and publishing it as their own, it takes so long to get it all taken down via Google and their host, that the thieves don't care, after 24 hours the article has already ran its course and served its purpose. And when they are eventually removed from search engines and their host has blocked them for violating TOS, they simply move on to the next free virtual hosting service, rinse, repeat.

  7. Linux Mint 18.x reaches end of life, upgrade now

I'm not sure how this data is collected but it looks like some machines are still running Mint 18.x https://community.linuxmint.com/hardware/welcome Clem (the head guy for Linux Mint) was talking about tweaking the Updates on Mint since it appears some might not realize they have not ran updates etc (i.e. https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4030 etc under 'Statistics' section and they had a bit more recent posts about it to. but some quick info, "Between 5% and 30% of users run Linux Mint 17.x")). because, as I imagine you know, updates are not automatic like they are on Windows and many people might not bother to install them, or forget etc. but from what I can tell it looks like they found a solid balance of letting someone know updates are available but at the same time not nagging more experienced users too much etc based on this... https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4049 ; under 'Updates notifications'.

  9. EU says Apple distorted music streaming market competition

Did I miss something? At least in the US, Spotify has you sign up outside the store to avoid Apple’s cut. Is that not the case elsewhere?

  10. EU says Apple distorted music streaming market competition

What for? Google doesn't have anti-steering provisions or a monopoly on which app store you can use (I distribute my own apps through F-Droid but not Play Store). Except Youtube Play Music and GPM also didn't have to deal with an in-store cut, which means they could undercut Spotify. On the other hand, how many people subscribe to GPM itself? Most people will get it with Youtube Premium In this case Google doesn't require payments to go through them. When signing up for Spotify premium on Android, the payments are going directly through Spotify without Google taking a cut. Except when in cases when they do. Try putting a patreon or a donate link into your app. Banned

  12. Yes, we rather not have that information at all. No you don't need it. Use what you already have and keep it moving. Google does not need to be in the middle if everything. Some people do need that kind of information and that is what Google does provides information. Weird huh? You don't need to use that feature? Simple, don't use it or opt out of Google search and maps altogether. No need to be triggered over it. I use google as little as possible anyway. People can manage life just fine without Google. Same here... That doen't change the fact some people need that information.

  14. I don't understand. The "Dev Channel" is built specifically for weekly build releases. That is their target. They aren't going to change that. And, frankly, these Dev builds have been very stable for me. It's very rare that I need to switch to my "Beta Channel" partition. Choose the channel that you would like - Dev, Beta, Release Preview, Release. And enjoy. But don't complain about the release strategy of a channel, especially when it is meeting its targets.

  17. They really should put this in the Store (like they should with most their optional components). Having all these separate tools and apps running their own custom update scripts and custom pop-ups about new versions is really off putting.

  23. Facebook gives $5 million to fund COVID-19 vaccines

5 mil for a company that is Facebook size is nothing. Facebook's net income was $29 billion in 2020. This amounts to a donation of .000172% How generous of them! to be fair... 0.000172% of my yearly income is about a $20 donation. I do consider a $20 donation to be pretty decent. I also wouldn't expect anyone around me to bash me for only giving $20. I don't like Facebook, but every donation is a good donation. Let's not think about how everything should be more. You earn $12 million a year?

  25. Are they mutually exclusive? Are you asking whether Microsoft and Google are mutually exclusive entities? The answer is: Yes, strongly so. They are know to have sought to Scroogle each other. Since the majority of the article is dedicated to Microsoft joining the alliance, I strongly believe the appropriate title (which summarizes the contents of the article) would be: "Microsoft and others to join Bytecode Alliance, the WebAssembly organization" The quote is a bit confusing but Microsoft isn't only just joining this, they were already in with mozilla, intel and fastly. Two things happened here, the org became a 501c and several new members joined (including google). So, even though Microsoft was already in the alliance, you felt compelled to quote from Microsoft saying, "Microsoft is excited to join the Bytecode Alliance ..."? Still, that leaves me with a question: When did Ralph Squillace say all of this? I assume the answer isn't "yesterday," am I right? OK I just checked there website in web archive and you are right, Microsoft does appear to be new! This paragraph in their announcement makes it sounds like Microsoft was already involved "Incorporated by Fastly, Intel, Mozilla and Microsoft, the Bytecode Alliance now invites organizations to join its cross-industry collaborative mission alongside new members Arm, DFINITY Foundation, Embark Studios, Google, Shopify, and University of California at San Diego." Have updated the article.

  29. This should be interesting because a lot that were defending Steam said Epic couldn't sustain 12% over the long run and now we have another player in the game that's doing 12%, this is making it much harder for Valve to justify that 30% cut because it wouldn't surprise me if others like GOG follow.

  31. Sony announces PlayStation 5 launch in China, beats Microsoft to it

They can't sell enough in other key markets so why rush to release in yet another one if you can't keep up with demand to start with? Sure China is a big market but they limit the games that can be sold there and afaik, probably don't have any love for something like game pass which is streaming from outside their digital wall.

  32. aaah good catch, I was the one that stumbled across the deal and let the team know about it but I totally missed that too in the fine print still quite the discount though when you DO have trade ins It happened to me before for an ad published on Neowin for a Galaxy book or something like that. I clicked over to discover the price was after trade in. Saw the real price and put that card back in my wallet. lol these companies are sneaky about that sometimes, not making it obvious it's not just a general discount I swear Yeah because the default price on the page is with trade in, it only becomes obvious when you go to check out

  36. Facebook gives $5 million to fund COVID-19 vaccines

Works out to 714,285 vaccines. The main problem that COVAX has been facing anyway is not a shortage of money but rather a shortage of vaccine stocks. Several countries and WHO came up with plans to remove patents from the COVID vaccines until the end of the pandemic so production could be boosted but of course the rich countries came out against the proposals. Profit over people's health again.
