Samsung ends security updates for the Galaxy S8 and S8+
wingliston and 5 others reacted to 1qa2ws for a topic
My parents bought a Dell computer in 2007. It came with Windows Vista. It still runs today with Windows 10. And if it didn't, I could install Linux on it. She uses it for banking and email, and there's no reason to replace it. Four years of software support is pathetic. I don't want to hear another word from these companies about the environment, when they create mountains of e-waste out of functional hardware. Apple in particular loves to greenwash themselves, and it's extremely distasteful.6 points -

It's about time that politics step in, and demand a certain amount of updates & support. Same for right of reparability, swappable batteries and more of these shenanigans. If your phone is 150 bucks or 900, a minimum of two OS updates and 4 years of security updates after that should be made mandatory. Hardware has become so good, it makes no sense to swap it every 2-3 years. Unfortunately profits will go above e-waste and such. At some point one has to force it by law. But that will be a pipe dream I guess..5 points -

Not just the gaming industry. All multi-nationals are dirty by definition as they put profit before people. I have no alternative that wouldn't include tearing the world down and rebuilding it but I repeat, as it stands today all multi-national companies are filth and are actively working against the best interest of the normal everyday person. Sony announces partnership with Discord to bring service to PlayStation Network
matthiew and 2 others reacted to dustojnikhummer for a topic
Hopefully, Sony didn't make it an inclusive partnership, cause that would suck for us Xbox Series X owners. Since discord is hell bent on staying independent from what's been talked about, they'd be silly to take a single Sony investment and lock their service to just the PS Network. They'll want to make deals with Xbox and others and get it integrated as much as they can all over, or it won't grow outside of the PC space. Certain companies might have a culture that allows them to be bought by Sony. It might be because they are Playstation fans and hate Xbox. A business isn't into hating another business unless they're heated rivals in the same market. Discord isn't competing with Sony and MS or Nintendo. If anything, I'd say on the PC they're direct competition is Steam. To an extent at least. They're much better off getting their service into every platform out there so it can grow outside of the core "gamer" market it's labeled as being for right now. Team Speak is another "Discord clone". You do realize TS is much older than Discord and Slack, right?3 points -

Been using the Dev version of Edge on Mint since it came out and haven't had a single issue with it. It's been good enough that I won't even bother switching to this version. I will switch when stable release does finally get released. I know most Linux users are against putting Edge on their systems but luckily for me, I'm not like most users! Everyone is always for choice and I like this choice over all the other Chrome based browsers. FWIW though, Firefox is my preferred browser.2 points -

I could also imagine that there is a subset of Linux users that use the OS because they want to move away from Microsoft products. I don't know if that would be a large group or not, but it would make the interest in a Linux version of Edge even smaller. With that said, I appreciate that Microsoft are making their tools available for the Linux community, even if I wouldn't use Edge myself - nothing against Microsoft, I just prefer Firefox at the moment.2 points -

the question should be how much do you have tied to it and how much work would it be to migrate. I'm in your situation with my old gmail. Since services aren't tied directly to Yahoo it should be easier to move off of I would hope for you, the security risks alone that Yahoo keeps having and not admitting to would be reason enough to move off for me at least.1 point -

DHCP reserving on the router, also on the Wifi clone device?
goretsky reacted to Steven P. for a topic
I managed to fix it, it seems somehow the Powerline network suddenly stopped working, so what I think happened is that the extender was broadcasting an identical SSID for 2.4 and 5GHz Wifi networks that was causing a conflict (maybe?) I can't really be sure, because the extender is upstairs and most of my equipment is downstairs. The printer "successfully" connected to my 2.4GHz wifi but still only got a 169 IP address when it should be in the 192.168.178.x range. I just ended up completely resetting the Powerline network and starting from scratch, and now it works: You are right about DHCP reserve only being configured from the router, there isn't even an option to setup DHCP on the extender, so something else was clearly going on. I wouldn't bother with it if it weren't for my Nest Protect upstairs which kept going offline without the extender network.1 point -

5 mil for a company that is Facebook size is nothing. Facebook's net income was $29 billion in 2020. This amounts to a donation of .000172% How generous of them! to be fair... 0.000172% of my yearly income is about a $20 donation. I do consider a $20 donation to be pretty decent. I also wouldn't expect anyone around me to bash me for only giving $20. I don't like Facebook, but every donation is a good donation. Let's not think about how everything should be more. You earn $12 million a year? Oops, no. I mathed wrong. multiplied by 0.000172 and not 0.000172%... It's 21 cents. A 21 cent donation. Yeah, right, that changes things a bit. EDIT: Oh, but then greensabath just said his calculation was wrong and I was right by accident! So yeah it's a $20 donation. I don't feel like verifying their math though.1 point -
EU says Apple distorted music streaming market competition
freedonX reacted to adrynalyne for a topic
That is the whole point: - they can’t put a link in the app that goes to their website with ‘sign up here’ cause then they will be banned by Apple. If they want users to sign up they arw forced to use Apple their payment system and pay 30 percent for it. They could pay it themselves or charge to money to the customer but this will make it 30 percent more expensive than Apple Music which is native music app. Either way with this rule either the customer is ripped of or the developers/service providers. Only Apple wins. Add to that that they won’t allow alternative stores that makes it super anti competitive. I love Apple products but I hope to see them bleed and be forced to be a bit more humble. They lost here, MS dropped their cuts this week for their stores (one of their defenses) and the Epic battle starts next week. Time for popcorn. That’s not the point I am addressing. It’s the one about them charging more for subs on the Apple store vs directly. That’s not a thing with Spotify and I’m not aware it is with other services either.I get the whole anti-competitive nature of Apple’s services with Apple Music. The idea of putting a link and directing them to their site to sign up is a bit of a gray area. I have an app on the store that takes them to PayPal to pay for items sold in the app. It’s completely legit because I pop them out into a browser and it’s no longer in-app. I'm pretty sure if apple were aware of that your app would be banned, I remember a large company, pretty sure it was microsoft, doing this and apple pulled the app until they removed it. I am 100% certain they would not since they suggested this method to me. There is nothing that says you cannot break out of an app and use a browser. It seems what you are doing is popping up a webview control instead of using an in-app prompt telling you to visit the website to purchase. Cleaver, but I don’t think Apple would lt you get away with it if you were Epic and trying to use this exact tactic with Fortnight Incorrect. I am literally breaking out of the app and using Safari to take care of payment. Apple does allow it, since they suggested it. Not in-app? Not an in-app purchase. Epic got in trouble for not only hiding their purchase system from reviewers, but staying in-app. What is your app called? Apologies, I’m not going to disclose that. If you can't talk about the app you are using, then it's not an app open to the public. Therefore, your app is a special case (with specific rules) and no relevance to the vast majority of the apps the EU is concerned. That’s also not true; it is on the App Store, therefore it has to be public. I said I wasn’t going to say what it was, because it isn’t my place to advertise it, and I was speaking of concepts here. Im also not interested in bringing the attention of a bunch of Internet cowboys who think they know Apple guidelines and have a bone to pick over something I wrote for a client. I do have these so-called special cases with another client though, which is why they have an enterprise license, which prevents Apple from having much say at all. I never equated this to anything regarding the EU. I feel like nobody is reading the entire conversation and just jumping to the end, only to make ignorant conclusions. To paraphrase, all I said is that this is a gray area and we were able to work around it. Some people blew it out of proportion by telling me how wrong I am. It was literally just a comment in passing and not meant to overrun the discussion.1 point -

I have developer windows 10 pc and it takes 2-3 seconds to switch between chats. think about this there is no easy way to copy or download an image someone sends you in teams. it makes it worse when you cannot forward it. try copying the image by right-clicking. it will let you copy and you would think you can paste to paint or any other applications. nope doesn't work. such a POS application.
