  1. I'm... not mad at this. Windows 10X, for all its promises, is still vaporware. General consumers haven't heard of 10X, and few outside of industry insiders and tech enthusiasts have even used it. You also have to consider the massive uphill battle 10X would face. 10X is supposed to be Microsoft's version of ChromeOS but WITHOUT a gut of store apps and little to no legacy support from Windows x86. 10X is trying to find a fourth spot between Google, Apple, and Windows 10 proper. I also wonder how much of this decision is because of chip manufacturers. 10X seemed like a much better idea 2-3 years ago when chip makers didn't have a good solution for Windows. Now there's the 11th-gen Core series, 8cx/SQ, and Ryzen 5000 series. OEMs can get 10 hours of battery life with amazing performance and LTE. After the gigantic sales spike of Windows devices during the pandemic, I could see why OEMs would be hesitant to introduce another product line when the one they have is selling so well. Yes, I get that 10X was made for low-end devices while the chips I just listed are for the high end but... educational prices for Windows 10 laptops can be as low as $240 while also offering the full Windows 10 experience. Maybe Microsoft is seeing less of a reason to cannibalize that market. Perhaps Microsoft is starting to believe that in the long run, it's cheaper and easier to clean up Windows 10 than it is to introduce a competitor to itself. None of this is to say that 10X will never see the light of day, merely that releasing 10X isn't as urgent as tech enthusiasts like to believe it is, and Microsoft can continue to work on 10X in the background until the time is right.

  4. The sooner everyone accepts that Windows future relies on the relic of win32 apps, the better everyone off will be. Nobody is going to invest in a completely new os to develop against in current climate. Well established iOS and Android app stores (both of which work on desktop computers now) are taking up the slack if they can't use a browser based application. Most win32 apps for new services are basically a web wrapper at this point anyways. Anyone who wasn't caught in MS marketing hype new 10x was DOA.

  12. I wouldn't say this is a key example, but is a piece of a longer puzzle of ######ing up Windows development. It is almost like the teams that took control in the Win8 and again in the 2016 timeframe don't understand the platform or technologies they have available. Instead development starts and stops seems to be angled from 'kiddies' that barely touched anything but Linux or MacOS for the past decade. Windows, specifically, NT has a lot of potential and capabilities that the rest of the Windows development team seems to forget or not even realize it exists. In this note, I have had my jaw drop when talking to people on the Windows dev team, and watch them realize what I am referencing is something they didn't know NT was capable of doing, or OS level information available that they 'recreated' because they see everything through scripts-char-I/O in *nix contexts. Sad, really sad, as there is so much being recreated INSIDE Microsoft. It used to only the 3rd party or OSS software that when ported to Windows had tons of redundant code because the project is redoing things the OS already does. To see Windows devs doing this in 2020, it is insane. The 'popularity' of Linux for development in University and off the shelf courses, is now damaging the future for Windows NT itself, which should have kept it away and in front of the idiocy of Linux crap. Linux as a kernel - great, as a 'model' for a kernel - bad. *nix as an OS model - really bad. If this was 1980 - these would be brilliant. in 2020, they are dumb up on dumb. Even NT's novel approach is dumb compared to what is possible in 2020. /facepalm

  14. They missed the boat like with mobile. Chrome OS is too entrenched just like iOS/Android was when they introduced WP7. Another issue is the perception that non geeks have that when they see something that looks/behaves like Windows, they expect it to run all their apps.

  15. People won't use an OS that can't run their programs. original plan was to still have win32/win64 support but fully containerized. Things could have been great if they stuck with that plan. Focus on the new but still support legacy but in a more secure method. This was their chance to build windows from the ground up using more modern techniques/APIs instead of constantly stacking on the same base code that probably still resembles code from 95 or even 3.1 in areas.

  16. Probably for the best. They should really stop trying to kill off Win32, it's not going to happen.

  17. Windows 10X reportedly delayed indefinitely, focus to shift to Windows 10

Someone in Product management probably finally came to their senses and were like "what the hell are we doing making a Chrome OS knockoff" and scrapped the whole junk.

  18. Microsoft just needs to trash customers feedback and start building the best OS from scratch like they did with .NET. Revolutions do not come from the base.

  19. This is good news for how big the next Sun Valley update is looking to be. And probably a reaction to the bounce back in desktop sales. 10X was always a reaction to Chrome OS. But honestly with the way hardware is going and performance on the low end, it's really just a matter of getting full 10 to act nice in education. The reason schools like chromebooks are not just price but how hands off they are to manage. 10X was looking like it would be pretty much the same idea. I liked the idea of containers keeping everything separate and thus the system safer and more stable.

  21. The biggest problem is Microsoft needs to start eating it's own dog food again, and make all of it's apps for Windows10 and not just for the web and then mobile platforms. If they would do that they would boost the Microsoft store, and in turn allow things like Windows10X to come out.

I like this, they should do that more often as it assures testers they're getting something pretty much brand new rather than a week old or so prior to release

  24. Oh please, reply-all storms happen in lots of organisations, I've seen it happen plenty... Yes, it took 20 years for Microsoft to implement a feature because of an internal incident.... give me a break. Comments like yours show the level of maturity (zero) of the majority of Neowin members. really? I'm talking about where it started with exchange.... sheesh... take stuff personal too much? and MS implemented this basic functionality in exchange in the 90's, like I said this protection started in the 90's.... not 20yrs later this is just an extension of the original functionality and that internal incident literally took down Microsoft for a couple days, so yes they had to implement it )the original reply all fix in the 90's) because of an internal incident... it jammed their exchange servers, crashed their DC's they couldn't work at all for days.... I think it's more like the comments you made show the real level of maturity... jumping on something without knowing why I said it.... but hey, how dare I know the history of Microsoft Exchange and why some features exist...

  31. I sort of expected 10X to mostly have a short life and most parts of it are shifted into 'regular" Windows 10 to improve its "tablet mode'. I suspect they just accelerated this and with Sun Valley are taking the chance to move many 10X changes to 10. It makes more sense to have Windows 10 x86/ARM with what was 10X as a lighter weight tablet mode UI, than to have a whole another OS.

I don't see ModernFlyouts does anything different, just a different coat of paint. I've been using EarTrumpet as my sound replacement, the last couple of years. It actually improves the usability tremendously. Not any different than the mock-up, to which I compared it. I wasn’t posting anything that had utility. I myself have no use for ear trumpet. Yeah I realize that, just suggesting another alternative. I just like having the ability to control the volume of everything individually, just convenient. Why not just use the built-in Windows functionality for this? Genuine question. I used to use EarTrumpet, but haven't had any use for it ever since Windows added the functionality natively. Huh? Windows does not have EarTrumpet's functionality natively... Windows 10: https://i.imgur.com/Cg3Xue2.png EarTrumpet: https://i.imgur.com/9XDx2S3.png

  34. Google wants you to imagine a future without passwords

Ya, if the average user is responsible for "Backing up their database file" .. it ain't gonna happen. Yeah, sadly I think your totally right as many just want to get online, type in a quick username/password, do whatever they got to do, and move on. not realizing that certain things online, if they got taken over, could wreak havoc on their lives. but it seems like many always have to learn the hard way. not just in terms of this password stuff but even when it comes to important data backup like family photos/pictures they would be upset if they lost but yet take not even a minimal level of measures to protect that data. MOST users are atrocious when it comes to data backup. We are even talking Quickbooks and Quicken ... "When was the last time you backed that up?" ... "Oh I don't know. maybe a couple of months ago. My favorite one was when I asked a guy if he had been backing up his QuickBooks on his Mac. He said "I think it's been backing up to this flash drive" ..... ..I said, "You think?" ....I said you should "KNOW!" Around that same time he rebooted his Mac and at that moment, the flash storage decided to go tits up and he had to send in his computer for data recovery. Before he rebooted and around the time we had that conversation his Mac was pretty un responsive. It's as if the flash memory was already starting to go. After he got is computer back and his data recovered he still sucks at backing up. Given what your saying... it seems almost like they don't even know what to do. like it's not a lazy thing in some peoples case, they honestly just don't know some very basic stuff about computers but basically... these people are doomed as if they don't have a pretty basic understanding of computers and the like by now (like with a basic file manager etc), they never will, especially given computers (and general modern tech) have been around a good 20 years now. but what what can you do, as I figure if people are still THAT bad, they always will be. so it's like your talking to a brick wall. that's got to get a little frustrating for you as you probably see that stuff routinely. but who knows, maybe you get a pretty good laugh out of it and on the bright side, it's people like that who will always need those random tech guys around, who look like a genius in comparison, even if they ain't doing anything special. but with all of that said... that's got to be difficult for you to stay professional with those kind of people especially if they are acting like the loss to them is the end-of-the-world but yet they still continue to do absolutely nothing about it (it's almost like they assume if something goes wrong that people like you and I etc can bail them out which won't always be the case). because ill admit I don't have much patience myself (basically little to nothing to be honest) with some people who struggle to figure out basic browsing the internet and the like level of stuff. because it's really frustrating to still be telling people about that stuff, and not just in that regard, but how to operate say a TV with switching to different inputs and they still struggle with it and that stuff has been around quite a bit longer than general computers and is nothing difficult to understand. but I guess some peoples minds just struggle with this kind of stuff. good luck I know more than one person who is helpless if their window gets dragged off the right side of the screen and they can't see the Minimize, Maximize or X. They don't know they can drag the window back to the left... No joke.

"Lifetime 15TB Backup Plan normally costs $4,320, but it can be yours for just $149.99 for a limited time" that's a bit of a red flag to me. nothing truly worth THAT much would be THAT low. besides, for $150 one could get a rather large hard drive. so in the end stuff like this would have to be near dirt cheap to even consider.

Concepts tend to look good till the actual coders turn around and tell you this doesn't work or you can't do this or it won't work right. Or the user groups that companies bring in to test some changes don't like it so the whole thing is scrapped.

  43. Well duh there's no ARM cores, how are you going to run x86_64 CISC instructions on an ARM CPU? Your post makes no sense. I am really not understanding this push for ARM on literally everything. Because Apple made a good implementation of their own design, suddenly its ARM ALL THE THINGS. My first assumption is battery life... but not all folks need long lasting batteries, especially if their mobile CPU is consuming 65W! Then comes the heat argument, which I don't know if a proper ARM CPU can play normal games yet like x86, especially packaged in a way where it ambiently cools. I love ARM a lot but let's be realistic, it's got a LONG ways to go against x86 still. Yeah-- for that I can see. Battery and heat, its not going to be beat. We know Intel has its own spin on ARM with their smaller Atom cores on the way with 12th gen. They might not be able to match pure ARM on battery life and heat but if they get close enough while keeping the performance advantage then I'd call it a win.

  46. I'm kind of with you on this and the Signal demo was pretty much an example of where your personally identifiable data stayed within Facebook. This is how their ad platform works. The problem is that most people don't know how tailored the adverts they see are and it's a shock when they see things like the above where the information they had put into Facebook (presumerably to share with their friends, colleagues, etc.) and their behaviour was used to target them.
    1 point
  47. I don't get the hate against Facebook itself. Facebook isn't selling my data or giving it away. It gives advertisers a tool to really specify who should see their ad. Only Facebook knows who those people are. Now compare this to any other company. For example, the local store with a discount card, that promised not to share my info, GAVE my email adres and balance to Facebook. Hospitals, even very specific about my condition share my email address, name and birth info to Survey holders and services like mass mailers without consent. Or any other website with 300+ options to disable not to send my data to other companies. So I rather have 1 service that knows everything about me, but keeps it private than having over 300 companies building profiles about me.
