Windows 10X reportedly delayed indefinitely, focus to shift to Windows 10
devHead and 4 others reacted to Figure 8 Dash for a topic
I'm... not mad at this. Windows 10X, for all its promises, is still vaporware. General consumers haven't heard of 10X, and few outside of industry insiders and tech enthusiasts have even used it. You also have to consider the massive uphill battle 10X would face. 10X is supposed to be Microsoft's version of ChromeOS but WITHOUT a gut of store apps and little to no legacy support from Windows x86. 10X is trying to find a fourth spot between Google, Apple, and Windows 10 proper. I also wonder how much of this decision is because of chip manufacturers. 10X seemed like a much better idea 2-3 years ago when chip makers didn't have a good solution for Windows. Now there's the 11th-gen Core series, 8cx/SQ, and Ryzen 5000 series. OEMs can get 10 hours of battery life with amazing performance and LTE. After the gigantic sales spike of Windows devices during the pandemic, I could see why OEMs would be hesitant to introduce another product line when the one they have is selling so well. Yes, I get that 10X was made for low-end devices while the chips I just listed are for the high end but... educational prices for Windows 10 laptops can be as low as $240 while also offering the full Windows 10 experience. Maybe Microsoft is seeing less of a reason to cannibalize that market. Perhaps Microsoft is starting to believe that in the long run, it's cheaper and easier to clean up Windows 10 than it is to introduce a competitor to itself. None of this is to say that 10X will never see the light of day, merely that releasing 10X isn't as urgent as tech enthusiasts like to believe it is, and Microsoft can continue to work on 10X in the background until the time is right.5 points -

They did in the past, they created a half backed Windows Phone but also continued and created a near complete Mobile OS - Windows Mobile 10. But after completing, they just gave up, OS was mature enough to get devs on-board. Many devs were also creating apps for 3 OSes, if they continued with WM10, they might be having apps in their windows store right now after these years. And not only partial support, might be having good support from devs.3 points -

Ramp for handicap person
Bruinator and one other reacted to +Biscuits Brown for a topic
A 10' ramp rising 3' will result in about a 17.5° angle. A standard commercial ramp is about 5° and home ramps can run up to 3:12 or about 15° but at that slope, motorized chairs start to have issues. I'd say if you are reasonably fit and are pushing her up for a visit, you may get away with it but its probably going to be a bit steep if its an everyday ramp.2 points -

Desktop PCs should be front and center of UI and UX development. Smaller spaces between buttons, smaller buttons overall, increased information density and minimal whitespace. And bring back Aero Glass. No more huge whitespace UWP programs that take up 1/3 of my 4K 48 inch OLED TV when 1/8 at the most would be plenty. End all development of any 'mobile' centric things with the exception of the computer programs they develop for Android which is the best overall mobile experience especially if you use a Google Pixel series phone and heavily utilize Google's ecosystem of products and services. Bring the focus back to good ol' classic Win32 C++ development. I would also like to see rebootless updates including major build upgrades that change the kernel. Just a quick flash of the display as it updates the kernel quickly and bam your programs that you had open are still there right where you left them. So if you were composing your novel in Notepad and hadn't yet saved it that window is still there with the text entered after even major upgrades. No more reboots. Add an advanced partition tool and hard drive and partition cloning and conversion tool to the boot menu and other advanced power user utilities. Add additional buttons to the usual minimize, maximize, close buttons: stay-on-top; and roll-up. With perhaps additional buttons that can be added through an advanced options panel. Bring things back to being power user-centric where instead of obsessing about making things "easy to use" without having to read documentation, ease users into getting used to doing some heavy reading to properly learn how to make full use of the OS. No more easy rides. We're also severely overdue for a brand new complete from scratch file system. NTFS is getting a bit long in the tooth. Make more use of the F13-F24 buttons for the power users like me who have special keyboards that have 24 F buttons instead of the paltry 12 that are included with JV level keyboards. Like winkey+F24 to make a window 50% transparent.2 points -

I wouldn't say this is a key example, but is a piece of a longer puzzle of ######ing up Windows development. It is almost like the teams that took control in the Win8 and again in the 2016 timeframe don't understand the platform or technologies they have available. Instead development starts and stops seems to be angled from 'kiddies' that barely touched anything but Linux or MacOS for the past decade. Windows, specifically, NT has a lot of potential and capabilities that the rest of the Windows development team seems to forget or not even realize it exists. In this note, I have had my jaw drop when talking to people on the Windows dev team, and watch them realize what I am referencing is something they didn't know NT was capable of doing, or OS level information available that they 'recreated' because they see everything through scripts-char-I/O in *nix contexts. Sad, really sad, as there is so much being recreated INSIDE Microsoft. It used to only the 3rd party or OSS software that when ported to Windows had tons of redundant code because the project is redoing things the OS already does. To see Windows devs doing this in 2020, it is insane. The 'popularity' of Linux for development in University and off the shelf courses, is now damaging the future for Windows NT itself, which should have kept it away and in front of the idiocy of Linux crap. Linux as a kernel - great, as a 'model' for a kernel - bad. *nix as an OS model - really bad. If this was 1980 - these would be brilliant. in 2020, they are dumb up on dumb. Even NT's novel approach is dumb compared to what is possible in 2020. /facepalm2 points -

HARDWIRE ISSUE
Mindovermaster reacted to jnelsoninjax for a topic
Turn off WiFi completely. You are troubleshooting correctly by disabling the connections and that should give you an idea of what the issue is. My computer is a desktop, but the motherboard has WiFi abilities, you will notice the highlighted connection is the actual ethernet port. Ethernet 2 is created by NordVPN and NordLynx is also from NordVPN. Look at the descriptions under each connection and then enable the one that you need. I am guessing that your laptop has a fn key combo that you can press to disable WiFi. Do that and then Windows will then realize that the Ethernet connection is there and should use it.1 point -

Google announces next steps for YouTube TV on Roku devices
n_K reacted to George P for a topic
Rokus distribution model is not about content but about the ads you show on your channel and and subs or sales in your app go through Rokus systems so they also get a cut. As far as ads go, there's no clear revenue split, it's actually a "inventory" split. The deal says Roku gets 30% of your ad servers space, or basically 30% of the ads on your ad server are going to be whatever Roku wants and they keep 100% of the money for those ads. The other 70% are your own ads etc. For subscriptions and any in-app sales that are handled by the Roku service, they get a 20% cut. In the ends it's really like what Apple or Google does on their stores. The outcome of that case with apple is going to have far, far reaching effects on so many companies and devices. Google would be able to argue that this is unfair and that they should be able to load things through their own system without roku, embedded devices seem like the next target and maybe even game's consoles e.g. nitendo switch, surely a company could argue they don't want to pay nintendo's fees and percentages and want to launch it themselves through their own store and nintendo not allowing that is the same as apple... Going to be very interesting to watch This is why as far as the Apple vs Epic case goes it depends a large part on how the courts look at a smartphone compared to a console or a small embedded device like a Roku. Apple is fighting hard for example to strike the testimony of the Xbox executive from the record because it pretty easily paints the picture that smartphones sold with crazy margins for a profit aren't the same as a console sold at cost or at a loss. One depends on the store way more than the other to make money.1 point -

A completely new OS that ran the exact same apps Windows 10 does? I wonder how they would avoid coding for it. Won’t run win32. And UWA apps are laughable, and a barren wasteland. And I’ve purchased some pretty pricey UWA apps too… I stand by what I said. There is not a vibrant store of quality UWA apps. 10x would basically be a browser with a bunch of pinned web apps. The initial version wouldn't have, but the plan was always to bring it. When they changed the plan for the initial version though suddenly nobody wanted it. So at least that's true. If they go back to including win32 though I'd be all for it.1 point -

I don't see ModernFlyouts does anything different, just a different coat of paint. I've been using EarTrumpet as my sound replacement, the last couple of years. It actually improves the usability tremendously. Not any different than the mock-up, to which I compared it. I wasn’t posting anything that had utility. I myself have no use for ear trumpet. Yeah I realize that, just suggesting another alternative. I just like having the ability to control the volume of everything individually, just convenient. Why not just use the built-in Windows functionality for this? Genuine question. I used to use EarTrumpet, but haven't had any use for it ever since Windows added the functionality natively. Huh? Windows does not have EarTrumpet's functionality natively... The golfing nun
Inertia reacted to jnelsoninjax for a topic
A nun walks into Mother Superior's office and plunks down into a chair. She lets out a sigh heavy with frustration. 'What troubles you, Sister?' asked the Mother Superior. 'I thought this was the day you spent with your family.' 'It was,' sighed the Sister. 'And I went to play golf with my brother. We try to play golf as often as we can. You know I was quite a talented golfer before I devoted my life to Christ.' 'I seem to recall that,' the Mother Superior agreed. 'So I take it your day of recreation was not relaxing?' 'Far from it,' snorted the Sister. 'In fact, I even took the Lord's name in vain today!' 'Goodness, Sister!' gasped the Mother Superior, astonished. 'You must tell me all about it!' 'Well, we were on the fifth tee...and this hole is a monster, Mother -540 yard Par 5, with a nasty dogleg left and a hidden green...and I hit the drive of my life. I creamed it. The sweetest swing I ever made. And it's flying straight and true, right along the line I wanted...and it hits a bird in mid-flight!' ‘Oh, my goodness’ said the Mother. 'How unfortunate! But surely that didn't make you blaspheme, Sister!' 'No, that wasn't it,' admitted Sister. 'While I was still trying to fathom what had happened, this squirrel runs out of the woods, grabs my ball and runs off down the fairway!' ‘That would have made me blaspheme!' sympathized the Mother. 'But I didn't, Mother!' sobbed the Sister. 'And I was so proud of myself! And while I was pondering whether this was a sign from God, this hawk swoops out of the sky and grabs the squirrel and flies off, with my ball still clutched in his paws!' 'So that's when you cursed,' said the Mother with a knowing smile. 'Nope, that wasn't it either,' cried the Sister, anguished, 'because as the hawk started to fly out of sight, the squirrel started struggling, and the hawk dropped him right there on the green, and the ball popped out of his paws and rolled to about 18 inches from the cup!' Mother Superior sat back in her chair, folded her arms across her chest, fixed the Sister with a baleful stare and said...1 point -
