  1. Sony should just be selling these directly from playstation.com, only to registered users, and then tie that console to the user who bought it. Make them useless for anyone who tries to buy it for the express reason of re-selling it. After this "shortage" is over, then go back to selling them through retail locations.

  9. I’m not against Win32 per say but I’m against bloat and Windows rot. 10X was supposed to be a fix against that which is why I wanted it. Instead we’re going to be stuck with the same legacy crap that doesn’t go anywhere

  10. I wouldn't say this is a key example, but is a piece of a longer puzzle of ######ing up Windows development. It is almost like the teams that took control in the Win8 and again in the 2016 timeframe don't understand the platform or technologies they have available. Instead development starts and stops seems to be angled from 'kiddies' that barely touched anything but Linux or MacOS for the past decade. Windows, specifically, NT has a lot of potential and capabilities that the rest of the Windows development team seems to forget or not even realize it exists. In this note, I have had my jaw drop when talking to people on the Windows dev team, and watch them realize what I am referencing is something they didn't know NT was capable of doing, or OS level information available that they 'recreated' because they see everything through scripts-char-I/O in *nix contexts. Sad, really sad, as there is so much being recreated INSIDE Microsoft. It used to only the 3rd party or OSS software that when ported to Windows had tons of redundant code because the project is redoing things the OS already does. To see Windows devs doing this in 2020, it is insane. The 'popularity' of Linux for development in University and off the shelf courses, is now damaging the future for Windows NT itself, which should have kept it away and in front of the idiocy of Linux crap. Linux as a kernel - great, as a 'model' for a kernel - bad. *nix as an OS model - really bad. If this was 1980 - these would be brilliant. in 2020, they are dumb up on dumb. Even NT's novel approach is dumb compared to what is possible in 2020. /facepalm

  12. I'm... not mad at this. Windows 10X, for all its promises, is still vaporware. General consumers haven't heard of 10X, and few outside of industry insiders and tech enthusiasts have even used it. You also have to consider the massive uphill battle 10X would face. 10X is supposed to be Microsoft's version of ChromeOS but WITHOUT a gut of store apps and little to no legacy support from Windows x86. 10X is trying to find a fourth spot between Google, Apple, and Windows 10 proper. I also wonder how much of this decision is because of chip manufacturers. 10X seemed like a much better idea 2-3 years ago when chip makers didn't have a good solution for Windows. Now there's the 11th-gen Core series, 8cx/SQ, and Ryzen 5000 series. OEMs can get 10 hours of battery life with amazing performance and LTE. After the gigantic sales spike of Windows devices during the pandemic, I could see why OEMs would be hesitant to introduce another product line when the one they have is selling so well. Yes, I get that 10X was made for low-end devices while the chips I just listed are for the high end but... educational prices for Windows 10 laptops can be as low as $240 while also offering the full Windows 10 experience. Maybe Microsoft is seeing less of a reason to cannibalize that market. Perhaps Microsoft is starting to believe that in the long run, it's cheaper and easier to clean up Windows 10 than it is to introduce a competitor to itself. None of this is to say that 10X will never see the light of day, merely that releasing 10X isn't as urgent as tech enthusiasts like to believe it is, and Microsoft can continue to work on 10X in the background until the time is right.

  17. What was the last movie you watched? (2021 edition)

There's a mid-credit scene that's supposed to set up Rainbow Six. That would make sense, given that John Clark is the founder of the organization. I don't know if I'm going to watch Without Remorse. Apparently it's not the novel, and for me Liev Schreiber is exactly how I pictured John Clark, even before watching The Sum of All Fears. But who knows, I'll probably give it a go in a day or so. I watched Nobody yesterday. I see what people were saying about the John Wick feel. Basically a man brought out of retirement who goes up against the mob. And while I like Bob Odenkirk, John Wick was better in my opinion. I've just finished watching The Lighthouse. A decent film, although I don't know what I expected. Robert Pattinson alone in a lighthouse with Willem Dafoe, of course it was going to be a descent into madness...

  18. Powerline Ethernet Adapter for 1GB Internet Service

Powerline adapters promise the world, but when it comes down to it, you're lucky to pull more than 250mbit. I avg about 150. My house has three stories (basement, main, second) with a electric main panel, and two sub panels, they barely work at all. Some outlets don't even pick up the sending end. But when you've got vaulted ceilings and multiple levels, I'll take what I can get. Probably better off with wireless tbh. My old apartment was knob and tube, which was even worse with those... got about 20mbit lol.

  25. People won't use an OS that can't run their programs. This. Windows on ARM has this struggle even with fairly good x86 emulation. I regularly browse the Microsoft's Surface community forms, and I don't know how many threads people post about trying to get some random app to run, often outdated or no longer under development at that. Sure the lack of x64 emulation/translation is currently a limitation, but sometimes an app requires some driver be installed (which has to be native), or just doesn't play nice. Can't help but wonder if such apps would fair any better in a container for the same reasons, once 10X got this feature. Side note: if delaying 10X means allowing them to focus more on the fall update which is where the x64 emulation/translation is expected to be released to stable builds; all the better. Apple's approach is much better. Translate program on the first launch instead of running it via emulation Actually I believe Microsoft does the same thing. The first time it's launched is saves a binary translation so on subsequent launches it doesn't have to repeat that, and will load it much quicker. I don't think Apple's solution is really any better as if you look at some of the tests people will run, emulated apps still have quite an overhead on the M1. It's just that the M1 is faster than Qualcomm's chips, so I think people have gotten a mistaken impression that Rostetta2 is better than Microsoft's translation layer.

There's not much to this update https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-version-21h1-is-coming---heres-what-to-expect/ And as far as availability goes, that is a question no-one can answer if you consider certain blocks for installing the May 2020 and 20H2 Updates were only removed at the end of last week https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-removes-all-update-blocks-for-windows-10-versions-2004-and-20h2/ 21H1 is now available in the Release Preview Ring and if there are no major bugs that crop up between now and the end of May it could be released before the end of the month. The May 2020 Update went live for everyone (and before blocks were placed) on May 27 2020 which was a Wednesday https://www.neowin.net/news/the-windows-10-may-2020-update-is-now-available-for-everyone/ If you want it now, I wrote a guide on how to get it without having to use the ISO method to upgrade https://www.neowin.net/news/how-to-get-the-windows-10-may-2021-update-right-now/ I've been using it since last weekend and haven't noticed any changes at all, I don't even have the new weather widget yet 🤓 but I do have it in my Insider Dev build haha

  36. Desktop PCs should be front and center of UI and UX development. Smaller spaces between buttons, smaller buttons overall, increased information density and minimal whitespace. And bring back Aero Glass. No more huge whitespace UWP programs that take up 1/3 of my 4K 48 inch OLED TV when 1/8 at the most would be plenty. End all development of any 'mobile' centric things with the exception of the computer programs they develop for Android which is the best overall mobile experience especially if you use a Google Pixel series phone and heavily utilize Google's ecosystem of products and services. Bring the focus back to good ol' classic Win32 C++ development. I would also like to see rebootless updates including major build upgrades that change the kernel. Just a quick flash of the display as it updates the kernel quickly and bam your programs that you had open are still there right where you left them. So if you were composing your novel in Notepad and hadn't yet saved it that window is still there with the text entered after even major upgrades. No more reboots. Add an advanced partition tool and hard drive and partition cloning and conversion tool to the boot menu and other advanced power user utilities. Add additional buttons to the usual minimize, maximize, close buttons: stay-on-top; and roll-up. With perhaps additional buttons that can be added through an advanced options panel. Bring things back to being power user-centric where instead of obsessing about making things "easy to use" without having to read documentation, ease users into getting used to doing some heavy reading to properly learn how to make full use of the OS. No more easy rides. We're also severely overdue for a brand new complete from scratch file system. NTFS is getting a bit long in the tooth. Make more use of the F13-F24 buttons for the power users like me who have special keyboards that have 24 F buttons instead of the paltry 12 that are included with JV level keyboards. Like winkey+F24 to make a window 50% transparent.

  37. They did in the past, they created a half backed Windows Phone but also continued and created a near complete Mobile OS - Windows Mobile 10. But after completing, they just gave up, OS was mature enough to get devs on-board. Many devs were also creating apps for 3 OSes, if they continued with WM10, they might be having apps in their windows store right now after these years. And not only partial support, might be having good support from devs.

  41. People won't use an OS that can't run their programs. original plan was to still have win32/win64 support but fully containerized. Things could have been great if they stuck with that plan. Focus on the new but still support legacy but in a more secure method. This was their chance to build windows from the ground up using more modern techniques/APIs instead of constantly stacking on the same base code that probably still resembles code from 95 or even 3.1 in areas.

  42. That's a really silly idea. I mean, a ton of the "Enterprise only" settings and options aren't needed by the home user whatsoever, so why complicate things? The only people who are tied in knots over the SKUs are the ones who let them tie themselves over the SKUs, everyone else just uses the version of Windows appropriate for their situation.

  43. This is good news for how big the next Sun Valley update is looking to be. And probably a reaction to the bounce back in desktop sales. 10X was always a reaction to Chrome OS. But honestly with the way hardware is going and performance on the low end, it's really just a matter of getting full 10 to act nice in education. The reason schools like chromebooks are not just price but how hands off they are to manage. 10X was looking like it would be pretty much the same idea. I liked the idea of containers keeping everything separate and thus the system safer and more stable.

  44. The biggest problem is Microsoft needs to start eating it's own dog food again, and make all of it's apps for Windows10 and not just for the web and then mobile platforms. If they would do that they would boost the Microsoft store, and in turn allow things like Windows10X to come out.

  47. Google wants you to imagine a future without passwords

Ya, if the average user is responsible for "Backing up their database file" .. it ain't gonna happen. Yeah, sadly I think your totally right as many just want to get online, type in a quick username/password, do whatever they got to do, and move on. not realizing that certain things online, if they got taken over, could wreak havoc on their lives. but it seems like many always have to learn the hard way. not just in terms of this password stuff but even when it comes to important data backup like family photos/pictures they would be upset if they lost but yet take not even a minimal level of measures to protect that data. MOST users are atrocious when it comes to data backup. We are even talking Quickbooks and Quicken ... "When was the last time you backed that up?" ... "Oh I don't know. maybe a couple of months ago. My favorite one was when I asked a guy if he had been backing up his QuickBooks on his Mac. He said "I think it's been backing up to this flash drive" ..... ..I said, "You think?" ....I said you should "KNOW!" Around that same time he rebooted his Mac and at that moment, the flash storage decided to go tits up and he had to send in his computer for data recovery. Before he rebooted and around the time we had that conversation his Mac was pretty un responsive. It's as if the flash memory was already starting to go. After he got is computer back and his data recovered he still sucks at backing up. Given what your saying... it seems almost like they don't even know what to do. like it's not a lazy thing in some peoples case, they honestly just don't know some very basic stuff about computers but basically... these people are doomed as if they don't have a pretty basic understanding of computers and the like by now (like with a basic file manager etc), they never will, especially given computers (and general modern tech) have been around a good 20 years now. but what what can you do, as I figure if people are still THAT bad, they always will be. so it's like your talking to a brick wall. that's got to get a little frustrating for you as you probably see that stuff routinely. but who knows, maybe you get a pretty good laugh out of it and on the bright side, it's people like that who will always need those random tech guys around, who look like a genius in comparison, even if they ain't doing anything special. but with all of that said... that's got to be difficult for you to stay professional with those kind of people especially if they are acting like the loss to them is the end-of-the-world but yet they still continue to do absolutely nothing about it (it's almost like they assume if something goes wrong that people like you and I etc can bail them out which won't always be the case). because ill admit I don't have much patience myself (basically little to nothing to be honest) with some people who struggle to figure out basic browsing the internet and the like level of stuff. because it's really frustrating to still be telling people about that stuff, and not just in that regard, but how to operate say a TV with switching to different inputs and they still struggle with it and that stuff has been around quite a bit longer than general computers and is nothing difficult to understand. but I guess some peoples minds just struggle with this kind of stuff. good luck I know more than one person who is helpless if their window gets dragged off the right side of the screen and they can't see the Minimize, Maximize or X. They don't know they can drag the window back to the left... No joke. You must have the patience of a saint dealing with that stuff as I would crack, especially if I had to spend any length of time explaining that to someone who's even vaguely used computers a fair amount over the years. I've been doing this for almost 20 years (going on about 17) ... I've been told I have the patients of jobe. Sometimes i do get frustrated to the point where I squeeze something so hard I hear a crack lol. Made an Easy $20 copying a video file from one USB flash drive to another USB flash drive. It was for a lawyer of all people. She didn't know how to copy a file from one USB to another USB. It was a video for a tial. Had to do that for her on two occassians.
