Iomega had been bought by Lenovo but has since gone the way off the dodo. Doing a quick search on the USPTO site shows that just about all their trademarks are dead..."Quiksync", "I" and "Zip" being they only ones "alive"...didn't see a trademark for "Zipdrive" Iomega Zip Drives were the first thing I thought of when I saw this articles title. I had one...it was god awful slow (parallel port) and the disks were expensive. Not soon after I purchased it, reasonably priced CD-R's became available... I'm pretty sure I just dumped the Iomega into the trash (wish I had kept it for nostalgia reasons). When I started uni in 1996, the course involved a lot of "multimedia" work (Macromedia Director, video files, audio files) and this was before home CD-ROM burners were a thing. We were all instructed to buy the parallel port Iomega Zip Drives - through their IT department. Then literally 9 months later, the uni's IT team decided to lock the systems down, remove access to the parallel port (physically), remove the drivers and thus made our hardware obsolete. People moaned, but I organised a campaign that we took to the IT team (who ignored us), then the head of school (who ignored us), then the chancellor (who ignored us), then the local newspaper - and we were all given money back by the uni.

  16. Here's how you need to prepare for the death of Internet Explorer 11

Software developers need to get on the ball. At work, we do overnight pulse ox tests on patients to see if they need/still need oxygen. To upload the data collected to VirtuOx for interpretation, we HAVE to use IE11. Supposedly the company is working on an "app" but nothing yet. Many other software companies need to invest in software development!

Anyone remember when she was vaguely famous as a musician? Now all Demi Lovato is famous for is being a trainwreck. Seriously it’s like her PR agent just sees value in any piece of news. DL probably just needs to not be in the public eye if she has all these things going on cos she clearly has some issues she needs to deal with

  22. Not really much of a surprise at all. Microsoft has a habit of removing "legacy" features that they feel are not used by a significant number of people. Maybe we are not talking about the same company. You have 20+ years of legacy (code, files, junk) on Windows 10 right now, they removing driver support is not a "habit". You could buy in 2006/2007 PC's (even after 7 release) without WWDM drivers (OEM stupidity). And many of those PC's have 10 running using XDDM drivers, not perfect, not great, but working.

  23. Get a 10-Yr subscription to ZipDrive for just $19.99

It is funny reading this thread in that it reads similar to people talking about punch cards not long ago. *singsong* 8" or 5 1/4" or 3.5" floppy drives oh my. In the time of Zip, SuperDisk was another alternative, which was more popular in OEM circles, as it could fit in the space of and replace a standard 3.5" drive. As many have noted, the consumer push of CDR around 96/97 was the beginning of the death march of Zip/etc. I personally feel it was cheap(ish) flash devices around 00 that truly killed off the need or use of the 100-300mb 'disk' mediums. No drive necessary with USB and USB card readers, and the cost of the cards/sticks wasn't much more than the blank Zip/Superdisk media.

  25. Here's how you need to prepare for the death of Internet Explorer 11

In addition to "crapware," lets not forget the whole large list of the new features included with a WIndows-10 install. Some of them have little or no use for single person users or small office settings. And if they remove all that, people will complain that there are too many versions of Windows or that installing it is too complicated because of all the decisions the user needs to make during install or that they have to download all these extra bits just to install the OS. Short version: you are not the only customer.

  28. HBO Max launches ad-supported tier for $9.99 a month

Between this and Hulu and a few others it's interesting to see what ads are roughly "worth" each month. I'm not gonna get into the "paying for ads" melodrama of internet comments, though, since those opinions tend to be shallow and simplistic. Setting that aside, I don't see how HBO Max becomes competitive without a better app. I used to think Funimation was the worst job of coding a streaming app I had ever seen. HBO set me straight.

Gateway module launches don't start until at least May 2024, which is when Falcon Heavy launches both the Power and Propulsion Element & HALO habitat. It'll take several more launches to fully assemble it. Cargo logistics and the delivery of the Gateway's CANADARM will be done by SpaceX's Dragon XL large cargo vehicle, also launched by Falcon Heavy. It's based on Crew Dragon's proven systems, but much larger. Dragon XL is also being looked at to provide extra habitation space under another program. It can provide sleeping space, a toilet, and life support if needed. Outfit as required. Starship and Orion will be alone for the first human landing missions, as shown in the images. Subsequent bulk cargo deliveries to the surface will be done by Cargo Starship vehicles; 57 tonnes reusable, 216 tonnes one-way (calc: JPL's Casey Handmer). No other launcher can lift Starship, so Super Heavy it is, and yes - it's an in-space and small-body lander vehicle. IF Congress provides money for Blue Origin's team then it'll likely be launched by Vulcan-Centaur-V Heavy, but they can't carry near the cargo of the Starships. Congress is definitely talking about having both systems for redundancy. The Artemis baseline is a crew of 4, though Orion can theoretically carry 6. The Starship living quarters were shrunk accordingly, with the extra space being used for more equipment & cargo. Concept of operations Tanker Starships fill up a Storage Starship in LEO (read: Depot) before the Starship HLS launches. After HLS launches it can fully refuel in one gulp from the Storage vehicle, then leave for the lunar Near-Rectilinear Halo Orbit. It can loiter up to 100 days, waiting for Orion or going to the Gateway, with NASA only specifying 90 days. This extra 10 days was one of the reasons SpaceX won the contract. Starship crew cabin module prototype. It's about 2x this long, and stackable. It photobombed Musk's statement during a launch webcast.

  37. That's exactly what they were trying to do by using that as a excuse, after all this case is about how much control Apple puts over devs on iOS. But, and though I haven't looked this up in quite some time, iOS gets it's fair share of crap/malware in the app store. They also talked about how Android gets hit with way more malware apps as another example.

  41. Hmm? Seems weird that page isn't on a secure site. Using Firefox 88. HTTPS-Only Mode Alert Secure Connection Not Available You’ve enabled HTTPS-Only Mode for enhanced security, and a HTTPS version of b1.download.windowsupdate.com is not available. Learn More… What could be causing this? Most likely, the website simply does not support HTTPS. It’s also possible that an attacker is involved. If you decide to visit the website, you should not enter any sensitive information like passwords, emails, or credit card details. If you continue, HTTPS-Only Mode will be turned off temporarily for this site. Oh FFS -- it's an edge-cached binary asset. The HTTPS-only world is great for web browsing, but is overkill for downloading cached assets. The "feel good" validation of HTTPS-securing every asset on the Internet is just unnecessary. Excellent reply, and I knew/feel the same way as you about the "HTTPS only world" thing, but just thought I'd mention this.

Fair, I don’t have the credentials to say otherwise. But let’s discuss it. What is it then? Mental disorder is a broad term. I have a mental disorder. Whether I like the term or not isn’t relevant. The fact is, my brain doesn’t always tell my body to breath when I am asleep. It’s 100% in my head. It doesn’t make me insane, it doesn’t mean I am a sicko, it means I have a mental disorder. I’m not a lesser person for it, or anything like that. I think people get hung up on the term.

  48. They learned that if they don't force updates, subpar vendors will release hodgepodge enterprise products that tie their enterprise customers hands behind their backs. Look back at the ridiculously slow death of IE6. That wasn't because of home users... that was because of enterprise apps that required a replacement versus an upgrade because the people who wrote were either out of business or left the company. Yet... the same business users whining about how critical the app is to their business, they got all hot and bothered when asked why they did not have the budget to maintain the app or even a test/stage/dev environment. You want to see a silly corporate manager pop their top? Place the problem where it belongs (their lap) and watch them explode! I bet MS also learned that no matter what they do, it is written in to internet law that Microsoft sucks and this is the year of Linux.
