On a 1080 (non-TI) and 1660 mining when idle daily using NiceHash - roughly $25/week, $1300/year. It's been as high as $65-$70/week, but only for brief periods. Electricity costs vary greatly depending on where you live, so there's some areas where it's not profitable - for me the costs profitable (it's not a lot, but then you have to know that BTC appreciates in value over time so I'll take whatever I can mine). There's a lot of calculators online where you can enter in your GPU, what you're mining, and your typical electricity cost and get your 'profit'.2 points -
iPod Touch could be making a return in Fall 2021

I thought the iPod Touch was brilliant for kids. You pull out your phone and they're like "I wanna watch a video! I wanna play a game!" -- buying an iPod Touch for my daughter at that age was awesome for her to listen to her own music, watch movies on planes and play Fruit Ninja or whatever it was at the time without getting her stick fingers all over my phone. What age are we talking about? Who buys a $200+ device for a six year old? No idea why a kid would be ever be touching my phone.2 points -

Again, gamers need to get over the "hype" around crypto mining somehow being the root cause of GPU shortages - it's not. Everything is not available right now to the point where even car manufacturers the likes of Ford have to close their plants for several weeks at a time. Learn more about energy usage, who is using it, and how - before taking headlines of FUD that state how bitcoin uses a "huge" amount of energy. Do your own research. Considering a new laptop...maybe a PC instead?
adrynalyne reacted to Emn1ty for a topic
I can understand these criticisms. Neither are perfect, and it all comes down to what you want out of a machine. My personal experience with any Windows laptop, even the Surface, has been performance and battery life drop 30% after about a year and a half. And I have never been able to recover full performance for more than a couple weeks with factory resets or fresh installs. Of course, this could just be me... and it's very anecdotal. If others don't have this experience or don't care, more power to you. I've been despreate for a MacBook alternative but none have come close in my opinion.1 point -
Microsoft adds Math Solver to Edge for all Insiders
Brony reacted to derekaw for a topic
I've talked about this before, and the code/bloat is a few kb in size, something even a home PC from the 80s wouldn't have an issue with. However, it is a bit weird in the context they are doing it. They have Bing and their new Office and other online corkboard concepts for more utility of this type from the web. Why add any UI aspects to Edge when it is available in Bing and in the Office hubs, etc. I do agree in that respect, I don't get the Edge team screwing around with this. A few KB here and another few there and in a few years you have a clunky mess that people complain about. It’s the computer version of a second on the lips and forever on the hips.1 point -

blame false marketing, not the tech. I say again: long ago LED backlit TVs were being sold as "LED TV" because technically they are powered by LED as well, even if it was only the backlight that no-one cares about. However, it's great marketing to slap a large "LED TV" logo on the screen and packaging and watch people buy them. Similar to how some amps go to 11 my amp only goes to "max power" :D and gawd I HATE explaining to people their new LED TV isn't OLED.... and them telling me I'm stupid..... my favorite one is the Quantum LED LCD... throw buzz words all over the fact its just LCD1 point -
AI won't be taking up software engineering jobs any time soon, but it's getting there
dustojnikhummer reacted to Emn1ty for a topic
As a software engineer, I can't wait till software can write better and more efficient code than I can; because while I do enjoy solving hard problems the idea of being able to focus on the problem and not underlying tech is already something the software industry has heavily embraced with the constant abstraction of infrastructure. Software engineering is about solving business problems, if you can have a software engineer able to focus on the outcome rather than how each line of his code works that frees him up to do a lot more than just write code. Even if something is writing code for you, you'll still need Software Engineers to design and architect your services (at least until AI/Machine Learning can see software more holistically). I guess, TLDR: this is like fearing search engines taking away the jobs of libraries. Instead of fearing it, realize these technologies allow us to progress as people and stop wasting time in the weeds of "how" when we've already understood the "what" and "why".1 point -

I'd go with the Alienware laptop with these options and your needs. If you need one type of machine and end up getting another you'll just be annoyed when you have to use the older one. And yeah, no matter which way you go you won't have specific functionality but with a dedicated GPU it should last longer and give you a lot more options.1 point -

If I remember correctly, there's not much of a story to it. Langella's son was a huge fan of He-man and so Langella wanted to do it for his child. I think it was the same situation for Raul Julia and Street Fighter's Bison. Eh, I mean it was ok. It was an average zombie flick. But that also means it didn't need to be as long as it was. It became too drawn out, to the point I was hoping for/anticipating each person's gory demise.1 point -

Lifetime subscription to iBrave Hosting now just $99.99
jmc15john reacted to sagum for a topic
ahh that's a good question with all life time offers. It's a new hosting service (at least the domain was registered on 2021-01-21), so it's probably trying to gather some users in the form of initial offerings like many new services do, so they can cover the first couple of years hosting costs. Then drip feed the regular subscription customers in. However, they use stackcp.com which would suggest that they're reseller for 20i hosting. That's not a bad thing though, 20i are UK company and are generally considered pretty good, with global coverage with their servers. As for numbers, if (and this is totally guessing now) they are using 20i.com their reseller package is £461.87 annually. So they only really need to around 10 customers to cover the cost of the annual 'Lifetime' cost, as soon as they get 100 customers on the life time package that's 10 years hosting, putting the cost of an unlimited webhosting service for anyone buying into it at this, at around $10 a year if they make it to a '10 year lifetime' on the account without moving hosts and moving to their own dedicated of their own. As for whose lifetime, at this point I'm going to say 20i's, but they've been around since 2015 so they've kind of passed the point of no return now. Of course your millage may vary. The domain ibrave.com itself is registered to sav.com. A bit of digging suggests it's the former NameKing, and indeed the old nameking site does redirect to the sav.com website as well. It doesn't look like they're a small outfit to run with your money. So while the ibrave website lacks of transparency, from what (and I'm not saying it's fact) I can gather, a life time offer of hosting with them is actually quite a good deal IMO. More so if you're willing to use it to host couple of friend's sites for them as well.1 point -

Why not just buy an iPhone and don't use it with a SIM card? You wouldn't need to buy another device when you think they are old enough to have a smartphone. Why spend $1000 on something that doesn't even make phone calls or send text messages? If I was going to pay that kind of money for a music player, I would get something from Astell & Kern, frankly. Not Apple's crapola. $5 says they don't even ship it with a headphone jack, yet they put the idiot camera on it. Bunch of morons coming up with ideas down there. You are assuming (how dare you?) that I was suggesting people buy their kids the latest one. I was more thinking "Well, if they have to have an Apple device anyway (for iMessage etc), why waste money on an iPod Touch? Why not get something like an iPhone 7 and use it without a SIM card?"1 point -

Nearly 1,000 Apple employees call for company to support Palestinians
Xenon reacted to Brian Miller for a topic
I'm not sure how well this is known but in California, it is illegal to boycott doing business with Israel and if you do you are classified as "anti-semitic". How awful is it that lobbyists from another country will crucify you if you refuse to do business with their country that regularly engages in genocide by lobbyist that have taken over your own country? Let's just get one thing clear, not supporting Israel is not the same as being anti-Semitic. The fact is the Palestinians are Semites. So if you don't support Israel, technically you are being truly pro-Semitic as most people in Israel are European Jews and not authentic Israeli Jews. And also, let's just be brutally clear, this is not a comment against real Jews. This is a comment against the evil zionist have taken over the great nation of Israel. Zionism is not equal to Judaism in and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.1 point -
