I'd rather know how to stop google from pestering me with that popup "Google recommends using Chrome. Built for Windows. Easily search on Google with the fast, secure browser" along with a gray "don't switch" and a big blue "Yes" button every ######ing time i open any google related service. that is annoying af. that one time popup from ms is not even a blip on my annoyance-radar at this point.9 points -

The App Store needs help, but Microsoft would hurt itself by splitting releases. What MS should do is to get rid of Windows 10 Home entirely. Just combine Home and Pro. It would probably make sense to combine Enterprise too, but I can appreciate the accountants would fear that.5 points -

No, thanks! There's no need to bring back the stupid 9x/NT split of the nineties. If anything, we should have less SKUs and not more. One simple product, called Windows 10/11 or whatever they chose. But one single edition for everyone. And stupid enterprise users just need to engage their brains when an icon looks different. The enterprise needs to learn to move with the rest of the world. I certainly don't want to be forced to use some ancient Windows version, just because some ancient idiot in management can't handle change!3 points -

This is definitely the worst article I've read on Neowin in a long time, and I've been around here for several years. I looked up the author -- he's barely finished his bachelors degree. Not enough real-world experience to understand the dire implications of what he's suggesting here. He would've also been a literal child during the Win9x/NT days, and therefore doesn't understand how difficult things were for software developers back then. And yet, the late 90s were the easy days for developers compared to the 1980s where there were several competing platforms for business software -- Commodore 64/128, Amiga, Apple IIe, Apple IIgs, Macintosh, Atari ST, IBM PC, BBC Micro, to say nothing of all the Japanese computers like MSX2, NEC 8801, and so on and so forth. And that's before we get to Windows 2.0, GEOS and the other optional "operating environments" that layered on top of the base system. It was the worst for people making games -- there were more than a dozen different potential platforms to target, several of which demanded a complete rewrite. Don't believe me? Look how many versions of Ultima IV there are.... FIFTEEN. We don't want to take even one step back in that direction.... between Microsoft making it possible for people to write one game for console & desktop, and Apple making it possible to write one game for mobile & desktop, it's never been better for game developers. This applies to general-purpose software, too. What would be absolutely rotten for customers is to find out they need the "other" version of Windows to run their software.2 points -

Actually it's more than just that, windows updates will fail to install if you try to remove edge and block it from being reinstalled. If like me you do it by locking permissions, windows updates will fail to install, if you just uninstall it then it will automatically reinstall it with future updates. I hope the EU launch another anti-competitive investigation because this really has gone full circle sooooo ... basically exactly the same thing that happens when you remove chrome from android. at best you can disable chrome on android and even that locks certain things for setup. Hey look! Edge is attaining more and more characteristics that malware has. 1. On first boot after Windows 10 install, it hijacks your desktop by opening various windows and starting at boot, which no other browser on any other platform does. 2. The New Tab page already has a cookie notice where in every other browser, the New Tab page is an internal one. 3. It's getting more and more bloatware that can easily be "Recommended, Official Edge Extensions by Microsoft", which they can present in a new tab and let people decide whether they want them installed or not, such as the Math solver or whatever. 4. Now it has even more "recommendations". I have Edge uninstalled and it will remain that way. Also I've forbidden it from ever being reinstalled ever again. Such malware has no place on my computer, which is solely my property and no one else's.2 points -

If Sun Valley is a big update as it seems to be from all the rumors, branding aside, I honestly think they need to cut down on the releases. Sure you could just do 2 minor updates each year like we've been getting since 1904, but if the things you're adding are so minor that they're part of enablement packages, why do you have to push them out to begin with? At this point starting with 21H2, if it's a huge update, they should just return to a single update a year (in the second half), to roll in any new stuff they might have, make it be H2 updates, drop the H1 and just do monthly CUs between each H2 release.1 point -

Thanks for your feedback. I'm not sure how my bachelor's degree is relevant here (or if you even know when I completed it), but let's just ignore that. Yes, I was a "literal child during the Win9x/NT days", and I do not have to know or care about "how difficult things were for software developers back then" because we aren't in 1995. We've moved on. I don't deny the fact that platform fragmentation is a problem for developers. However, in my article, I do not suggest that Microsoft develop separate operating systems for enterprises and consumers. My whole point is about leveraging the tech that they are building - such as modularization of Windows and delivering separate features via experience packs - to allow for greater control over what enterprise customers want. Users will not need the "other" version of Windows, because all versions will be the same under the hood. Thanks for reading!1 point -

Microsoft needs to seriously overhaul the Microsoft Store app, and not just update the webpage contents it loads. It needs some serious improvements before anyone will switch from just downloading from websites. The biggest issue going forward is the lack of management of the purchased library contents. It's terrible. Impossible to find delisted, or purchased content from a year ago. if you actually want to use the store. Some reason it also takes forever to even populate the list every single time I try to view my library. Actually impossible to use.1 point -

My sentiments exactly! Haven't and wouldn't ever spend more than $100 for a phone!! Won't spend more than 100 bucks on a phone? Let me guess, Consumer Wireless or Trac phone? /jk Keeping an eye on sales of 'last year models' can get you pretty good deals. All phones are plenty fast these days with proper specs. My phones always hover around the 250 line, works for me. But with prices like these, I probably would gravitate towards Samsung, and not ZTE.1 point -
Are you getting vaccinated, or have been?
Steven P. reacted to +illumination for a topic
oh, yes, I wasn't suggesting I didn't know why I'm ineligible. My understanding is that the only reason for not vaccinating those infected sooner is because it allows more vaccine doses for those with no immunity. Which I totally agree with. Here in Switzerland, vaccination is open to everyone older than 16, so we're way past vaccinating 'at risk' individuals. Within the 2-3 months that I will wait before applying for vaccination, that will be the case even more. The latest research that I have heard says that immunity due to infection is around 80%, compared to the 94% for mRNA and 70% for the J&J/AstraZeneca, so somewhere in the middle. However the level of antibodies is also a lot more variable with infection than it is after vaccination, with various reasons for why they think that. Which is why researchers are recommending getting vaccinated 1 month after getting over an infection. They also say that vaccination after infection provides protection well above levels seen with vaccination alone. yes, that is the current guidance in Switzerland.1 point -
Intel launches the first U-series processor capable of 5GHz speeds
dontbeevil reacted to MS Bob 11 for a topic
Well the benchmarks Intel is showing seem to be very selective and everything but CPU benchmarks. First they show GPU-based video encoding, where AMD's Video Core Next is already out of the game for a long time due to very poor *quality*, performance isn't even the concern. NVENC is the only good alternate that stands up to Quick Sync in both quality and performance and beats it. AI workloads - few apps use it, is not mainstream. And then Intel show integrated graphics performance where Xe GPU gives a few FPS more than Vega. If pure CPU benchmarks are done, AMD's 8 core hammers Intel's 4 core in multi-core tests. Currently, Intel's only competitive platform is Tiger Lake H45.1 point -

Are you getting vaccinated, or have been?
Steven P. reacted to +mram for a topic
This isn't true. There are processes for FDA approval and the EUA is decided upon when the immediate public health concern overrides normal approval processes, as in our current pandemic. However, "FDA approval" does not add to (or negate) the science, safety, and efficacy of the drug, which is why the J&J vaccine was immediately pulled based upon a blood clot reported issue, for example. Any drug which might be sold or prescribed is immediately pulled at any point for issues found; J&J might have been pulled a year from now even with full "approval". In order for any drug at all to be used, all manufacturers must prove safety and efficacy. That bar has already been met in the case of the USA Covid-19 vaccines. The difference with "FDA approval" is that drug manufacturers have to follow a process which is very long, detailed, costly, and very bureaucratic, which ultimately allows the manufacturers to directly market their drugs to consumers. It has no real difference in litigation, support, efficacy, etc. This process takes a long time. It costs a lot. Not our concern, but it IS a concern when there is a world health crisis... and this is where the EUA comes in. All it does is shortcut the time to market and the ability for the manufacturer to sell directly. All the other requirements for use are met. All of them. There will be no further magic juju added to any vaccine approved for EUA between now and it's full approval, other than millions more people consuming it and further proving it is still safe, still supported, still effective. The drug IS approved for use by the FDA in the scope of a public health crisis. "FDA approval" only allows Pfizer (for example) to "sell" the vaccine 3 years from now when we don't have a current worldwide pandemic going on. Or probably it' derivative boosters. EUA is most definitely equal to an approved drug, contextually. It meets the exact same bars of supportability, efficacy, and safety.1 point -
