  5. And that's why people should be really worried about amazon. They have a wealth of information on people, they run servers for many companies around the world, they're getting into neural network CCTV identification and they're going into healthcare.

  6. "The UK government has been urged to offer vouchers to low-income homes to encourage more people to begin using ultra-fast gigabit broadband" Err, what? Why? What's so special that low income people need gigabit internet?

  7. Amazon getting into healthcare is terrifying. One of worst things we could let that company do. We need to reject it hard.

  8. Windows 11 has a new window snapping feature

Is there an option to disable it? I never use the snap feature and would probably get annoyed having this thing pop out at me.

  10. Windows 11 has a new window snapping feature

You should probably do something for your nerves if you get annoyed so often. Also, it's funny but are you trying to find if something is disabled before it's even released? Yeah, ok. I'm just asking a simple question, there's no need to be a jerk about it. As if everyone hasn't been asking if the centered Start Button can be changed and other stuff, it's called being curious about a new version of Windows, what does it matter if it is released yet?

They can call it Windows 59 as far as I'm concerned, but it still looks & feels like Windows 10 to me!!

  13. Yeah, there really isnt much different here from 10 to really seem like it's a new thing. Sure? Did you go through kernel functions, API and UI elements, framework differences, subsystems, file system, and 100s of other things. Just because Apple and Google has made the world STUPID about what an OS update is, doesn't mean we have to start looking at OS technologies in the same way. This also goes back to the mid 00s, with Apple list 200+ changes for an OS X update, that listed things like aligning UI elements, and new icons. In contrast people were saying Vista and 7 had almost no new features, when their cores had nearly 15,000 fundamental changes in Vista and still over 10,000 in Windows 7. This always wasn't counting things like aligning an icon or an icon change, which were also there, but not technically worth mentioning. Even in the WIn10 builds, there is a ton of new technologies under the hood between RTM and the latest releases. There has been issues with Windows the past few years, but at the core, the teams doing the kernel and drivers, and lower level systems are much like they always were, with substantial new technologies taking advantages of the key model features of NT. (I'm not saying there are substantial under the hood changes in 11, but in the past, most of the updates in Vista, 7, 8, 10 were things users never saw, yet benefited from greatly. Let us at least give them a chance to see what this holds.) I'm still a bit optimistic, but if they betray/kill some of the design talk I have heard rumblings about, I will be here complaining and criticizing along with everyone else.

  16. First Impressions of Windows 11 Pro Build 21996.1

My biggest worry is there doesn't seem to be any options on not combining taskbar buttons (ala pre-windows 7 style). This makes me sad

  17. I haven't installed the leaked build, but that makes me inclined to think they rewrote the taskbar in XAML. If past experience is anything to go by, we can probably expect Explorer to be unstable for the next year or so and be missing features forever. Yay!

Yeah. I could understand 20-50Mbit internet (you know, 3 kids all on Teams or ZOOM at the same time), but why Gigabit? You're look at the needs of today, the report is looking at future needs. Applications such as VR and AR are going to make current speeds inadequate.

This pretty much is a nice little way for people to find out about snap, and it's quicker than dragging the whole window I'd say.

PowerToys does this much better with customisable zones. Great for UW monitors. Hopefully a standard feature.

  32. That's strange, the screenshots in this article show them all rounded. https://www.thurrott.com/windo...indows-11-first-impressions a couple possibilities, either there's a 2nd newer build that leaked or could be the difference of being able to install a display driver or not which we have not been able to do from my knowledge Need display drivers for rounded corners.

  35. Here are the wallpapers included in the leaked Windows 11 build

I'm really hoping this is a very old early build and not the one for next week. I grabbed it yesterday and put on a VM and I must say, that it doesn't excite me like the older Whistler/Longhorn leaks. I really hope what we see here is like a "Watercolor" theme and the final UI will be much more promising. I miss the "wow" of early alpha/beta builds.

They don't apply their rules equally and they pick and choose who they will keep and who they will ban (notice how they banned Trump only when he stopped being useful for clicks) Trump was extremely popular on Twitter (and social media in general) at the time of his banning. He got banned for repeated lies about the election and citing an insurrection on the capitol. You can wave the Trump wave all day if you want but don't lie and claim Trump was banned because he wasn't getting clicks. We know exactly what he was banned for.

You can left align the start buttons and everything with a simple setting. So I have heard, I wonder if the option is in a place that is easy to find and not buried under a load of other options. At the top of taskbar options: https://www.xda-developers.com...21/06/settings-1024x831.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://www.xda-developers.com" rel="external nofollow">https://www.xda-developers.com...21/06/settings-1024x831.jpg That looks ok. I see they also have a widget off switch, more things to turn off. i wish that Windows would have an installation system where we can, say, turn all the junk off as default. One of the things I liked about Windows 95, nearly everything was optional and you could choose what you wanted to install during setup. You could even choose which shell you wanted, Explorer or the old Program Manager.

  39. Probably not worth their while developing widgets when most Enterprises worth their salt will disable them. Yes, because what Enterprise does is aligned with what the typical home user wants. Doesn't really matter what the home user wants, Windows has always been primarily aimed at the Enterprise. That's the reason the Microsoft Store never really got going as it's always locked down for people. Being locked down means there's never been a huge incentive for developers to get involved with it. Right, how many people actually use Windows on their home computers? Most people have probably never heard of it. Of course it matters what home users want. If it didn't they wouldn't bother making home editions in the first place, and there are a lot more people using it at home than there are enterprise users.

  41. Windows 11 has a new window snapping feature

I always felt like PowerToys should be a place to push out new features and test them/mature them and whatever works can find it's way back into the OS.

  42. Windows 11 has a new window snapping feature

The method to get there is new, the feature is old. Drag a window to the lower right corner and it'll use that snap zone even in Windows 10. But like the new multitasking toolbar of iPadOS 15, I guess this is a way for Microsoft to make people more aware of the feature. BTW, did you notice the uppercase "Start" in Microsoft's cryptic tweet? It seem to imply the main news in this build is the Start Menu but that there's more to come. A redesigned Settings app in particular is said to be coming (even with a leaked interface peek, showing one organized somewhat like Microsoft Edge Settings) and Windows Explorer is overdue for an update, with some work seemingly taking place under the covers and that can be enabled with a special shortcut in traditional Windows 10. Edit one and add this in the Location box: explorer shell:AppsFolder\c5e2524a-ea46-4f67-841f-6a9465d9d515_cw5n1h2txyewy!App

  43. Apart from a new Start screen & icons, not a lot appears to have changed. Hopefully there's some later builds that Microsoft will use in their event next week that actually shows some advancements. As it stands with this dev build, it's just lipstick on a pig.

  45. Getting schools online can increase GDP per capita by 20%, says report

Sponsored by Ericsson; a company that is among to put in 5G and a major player in internet infrastructure. At least they didn't hide behind it, and their intentions are pretty transparent as they wanted to push the UNICEF project. I mean, they stand to profit but that don't make it wrong. The conclusion is not surprising, I mean, we are talking about poorest of the poor countries in the world; any improvement on their education will spark dramatic improvement to their GDP.

  46. I can't express how annoying this simplistic request is with the way the settings menus work... That coupled with literally acting as a web page with a bunch of hotlinks to other menus because they couldn't overhaul everything over properly makes for such a disjointed experience. Do you want to "Rename your PC" or "Rename your PC (advanced)"?
    2 points
  47. Could just be because of this build, I expect those things to show up, it'd make no sense to lock it down that much. Reports that they're going to introduce a new Settings app are out there so they could be working all that in, plus if they're redoing the menus etc might just be missing in this early build. They didn't finish the LAST Settings app... I want to be optimistic but history hasn't afforded me that opportunity.
