Soluto : new version, two new features

Question

Soluto releases two new features, tackles Web browsers & application crashes

Today we are releasing a new major version. This is very exciting for us, as we move from only helping you out with your boot to helping you out with more PC frustrations.

Our first new feature helps you lighten your web browser by disabling toolbars & add-ons that are riding on it. It has become very common for non-techie PC users to get bombarded with crappy toolbars and other add-ons installed by applications and websites that build on users? inability to disable them. Even techie users get annoyed by that, either for themselves or for the people they support. Soluto now lets you see which toolbars & add-ons are installed, whether they are needed, and if they?re not, we help you to quickly remove them. In addition, if your default search provider was hijacked by one of these add-ons, we?ll let you know and help you revert to your favorite one (Google, Bing, etc.).

The second feature is the one I?m most excited about. Many people experience what?s called ?application crashes?. These are events where an application stops working and you get the infamous ?Send Error Report? window. These are very frustrating events because you have no idea what just happened, why it happened, and most importantly, what you should do for the crash not to recur. This is exactly what we deal with in our new version. Whenever a crash occurs, Soluto analyzes it and compares it to millions of other crashes. In many cases, we?ll have a solution for the crash, and we?ll explain exactly what you need to do for the crash to never happen again. The amount of solutions grows every day, as new solutions are being written by our team, being discovered by automatic algorithms, and are suggested by our community of users (if you experience a crash that has no solution yet, we provide you with tools to research it and submit a suggested solution)....

Tried Soluto once, just to see how it works: when you don't install any crap on your computer this software is really useless

not really sure what the point of this is unless it is meant for low end users that do not know much about their computer?

"unless it is meant for low end users that do not know much about their computer? "

Which to be honest makes up the vast majority of the user base as a whole -- what like 239 million of them in the US alone ;) no I did not pull that stat out of my ass.

http://www.internetworldstats.com/america.htm

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

US - 313,232,044 Population ('11) - Area: 9,629,047 sq km (3,717,812.8 sq miles)

Capital City: Washington D.C. - population 605,959 (2010)

239,893,600 Internet users as of Jun/10, 77.3% penetration, ITU.

With like now I am just making one up but from experience of dealing with users for 25+ years. 99% of those are complete and utter morons when it comes to computers ;) so about 236.6 Million of them.

Its a great little product for showing you what is taking your machine so long to load, to be honest you will be hard pressed to find such a nice interface to your machines boot time anywhere else. And they have the made the product pretty user friendly for the "users".

Vs having to deal with it when your friends/family ask for why their computer takes so long to boot -- give them to the link to soluto and they can see for themselves how much crap is loading, how long each one takes, which one they can easy turn off which ones they should not touch, etc. etc.

I agree not something power users really have much use for - but I would suggest you check it out for the boot time report alone.. Its actually pretty slick looking! And also allows easy way to delay start things you don't need right away but like to have running.

Before you go bashing it - take a look! You can not beat the price "FREE" And keep it in mind for the next time your cousin sally asks you why her computer takes forever to start up ;)

I use it on my laptop - I have a bunch of dev tools installed, as well as some other apps I need to run in the background - syncing software, etc. Soluto lets me delay starting those services until my laptop is idle, which is great, because usually when I boot my laptop, I don't need those things running at that exact moment. I've shaved several minutes off my boot time due to it.

On my desktop with my SSD, however, there is no use for it whatsoever, due to the incredibly fast boot time. :D

This program is wonderful for non-geeks, like family members or friends; the people that install crap from CDs that come with cameras, printers, and scanners,

the people that buy those crappy $10 CDs from Walmart with Shockwave games, the people that download 300,000 IM clients just so they can play Pool and Bingo,

and etc. For the rest of us, msconfig works just fine. ;)

If you're a geek, you should also know why you're not supposed to use MSconfig for that particular job. only for temporary diagnostics.

Real geeks use autoruns.

however, real geeks also know about the right tool for the job, and realize that Soluto is very useful for analysis as well, and can give you a better picture of what's happening at startup and let you decide better what to not start or delay. Just because somethign is made to be simple doesn't mean it's not useful to "pro's or Geeks.

I use to use Soluto to help fix PC's or explain shortcomings. Then it started causing problems after it had been uninstalled - on three machines (including my own) it was preventing Windows from logging on with certain users. Had to manually remove a registry key which should have been removed when it was uninstalled.

Another problem I noticed with it is that it wants to start up with Windows whether you tell it to or not. Indeed, if you explicitly tell it not to it will. Again, a faulty registry entry was the cause.

Maybe these bugs have been fixed over the last 6 months, but I'm not in any hurry to try it again.
