bangbang023 Veteran Posted September 11, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 11, 2003 I have optimum online and have heard that they will cap your account if you upload more than a gig a month, no matter how it is uploaded (read this at dslreports). Is this true? Honestly, I wouldn't mind sharing files on clients like emule and all but I don't want to get capped for it, so for now, unfortunately, I just close the client once my download is finished and I have lamost no files in my sharing folder. bangbang023 Veteran Posted September 11, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted September 11, 2003 damn, they are really strict about this uploading stuff. I feel guilty leeching like that but I don't need to get capped. Especially when there are 2 other PC's hooked up to the connection.

mldkfa
If it's just pictures and documents you have no problem. you will never his your 1 gig of data. It's only mulitmedia that would kill ya.
jerzdawg
yes.. optimum will cap you if u upload too much... and its a bad cap to.. my friend who live 3 houses down can now only upload at 10 kpbs.... he had an FTP set up for music albums and uploaded a crazy amount.. not sure about the gig a month... but i can still upload at a steady 120 kbps... edit/ he got a letter from optimum that he will be capped... all it said was distribution of copyrighted material is breaking the law.. Roger H. Veteran Posted September 11, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 11, 2003 well OOl capped Diviatum but that's cuz his ass uploaded bout 300GB!!! Hell yeah they'd cap after that... Any cable company would. And If you only upload stuff like pictures and all that then wouldn't care... I have OOL for 3+yrs now and never been capped cuz i don't serve on IRC or FTPs...i've sent movies to my friends (shhhh.. they owned the dvd :D ) and still haven't .. i upload about 1GB a month and download about 30GB so if you think OOL is bad for capping then i should buss a cap in your ass! LOL (kiddin kiddin.. ) Honestly tho.. they rock! 10Mbit/s downloads? For that cheap? YOu wont find that anywhere and the other option DSL only gives about 12-16Kbytes/s upload anyways... yeaaaah.. that's some competition. OOL gives 125Kbytes/s

Miyagi Son
I got it too. And yes they do. You have to call them if they do. my friend would run like 3 servers and they finally capped him for a month. Only to make it fair for the others. IgwanaRob
They've been doping it for a long time now. No big deal at all, it's software monitored - if you upload a lot to one source you won't get nailed (one IP, etc) - but if they see you uploading a lot to a lot of different places it will lock you down for a while depending on "undisclosed" factors. I got nailed once, stuck at uploading at 12KB/s for about 12 hours because of my FTP server and my Webcam getting a few hundred hits one night - too much uploading that was abnormal for my normal usage (which is pretty high normally anyway). ROTFLMAO It's not a good service, it is by far the best service you could ever hope to get. 10mbps d/l, 1mbps u/l (on a good server I get just over 1 MB/s download speeds, and average about 120 KB/s upload). Not to mention rare downtimes. The only service you'll find better is a pure fiber connection like some of the people I know in SoCal have. Downloading from their test ftp server right now I'm getting this:

Jerzdawg is talking about kilobytes per second, you are taking about kilobits per second normal OOL upload is about 1.2mbit or 130kb/sec when you are capped they decrease it 10x, making your upload a bout 128kbit or 13kb/sec
