True North set to announce Winnipeg NHL deal

CBC Sports has learned that David Thomson of True North Sports and Entertainment Ltd., the group trying to bring an NHL team to Winnipeg, is en route to the Manitoban capital to announce the deal.

True North has scheduled an 11 a.m. CT media conference for a "significant community announcement," presumably the relocation of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg.

True North had stated for weeks that a formal announcement would be made as soon as the deal was finalized.

Winnipeg has been without NHL hockey since the Jets moved to Phoenix and were renamed the Coyotes in 1996.

The Thrashers would become the second NHL franchise to leave Atlanta, which relinquished the Flames to Calgary in 1980.

So, the only questions left are:

Will the team be named after the city (Winnipeg) or the province (Manitoba)?

Will the team be called the Jets or will they be called the Moose?

This hasn't been confirmed yet. The official announcement is at 11CST.

I would laugh so hard if they troll everyone and say the team is moving somewhere else. LOL

I'm really sick of hearing about the "return of the Jets".

There will be no realignment this year which means a lot of travel for the team next year. I just hope the league allows them to take the Jets name like they did for Ottawa and the Senators name.
