georgetok
Hi, I want to ship a hard drive with sensitive data ( Not Porn ) overseas. Drive has win -7 ( 64 bit ) Is there a software that would Hide individual Partitions & protect it with a Password ? OR Any other ideas ? Any help would be highly appreciated. 0 georgetok
Why go thru all the hassel of creating containers & encrypting when it is just the password that protects the data. Why not a software that just password protect the Partitions ? Both requires just the password to open them, so why encrypt it ?

0 +BudMan MVC Posted June 1, 2011 MVC Share Posted June 1, 2011 Um just bypass the pass and open the data that is in the clear.. You asked how to protect your "sensitive data" You have been given the link to the best software to do exactly that. To have just a password to access you would need that build into the hardware of the disk, you can not just password a disk with just software - it would have to be encrypted. And again if just a password - can easy be defeated, thought you said your data was sensitive?? If so then it needs to be encrypted to keep it secure - PERIOD! edit: just google for hdd unlock, can be done where data is lost or for a few dollars more save data.. If your data is worth more than say $100 then simple password is not very secure.

If your data is worth more than say $100 then simple password is not very secure. Let's say we have a software that locks the partition with a password. TrueCrypt encrypts the data & puts in a container which is password protected. Let's use same password for both. So both can be opened with the same password & both can then be read. So why go thru encryption ? How are you getting extra protection when you just need a password to open both ? What am I missing ?
0 +BudMan MVC Posted June 1, 2011 MVC Share Posted June 1, 2011 What part do you not understand about bypassing the password -- what mechanism is going to ask you for a password to get to the data? You have physical access to the disk, unless the password is part of the disk technology like with laptop disks you can lock there is nothing that you can do to the disk that would prevent you from just reading the data off of it - which is why you encrypt it! And like I said for a few dollars anyone can remove the hdd locked passwords on laptop drives. Which again is why you would ENCRYPT the data! If your worried about password strength then use a key for your truecrypt -- also you can encrypt the whole drive or partitions you don't have to create a container. Think of it this way, disk is a safe. Even if you put a combination lock on the safe.. I have the safe!! What keeps me from just cutting it open with a blowtorch to get to the data inside? even if the safe is not locked I can not read the data you have inside until I decrypt the data. I need a passphrase or keyfile to be able to read the data, even though I have physical access to it. This is nothing you could do to that disk that would put a password on it that I could not just bypass -- which is why you need to encrypt the data!
