Request: Data Recovery software

Question

TL;DR: I need software that will recover a lost exFAT partition

I had a BSOD that cause my exFAT drive (it's an internal 1TB) to become read only. I tried chkdsk but it said it couldn't unmount it to complete the fix. I found a link explaining how to fix it in Diskpart. Long story short, I erroneously used the CLEAN command and my partition went bye-bye.

I tried using a gParted Live CD but after scanning for a while it said it couldn't find anything. I tried a demo of a program called Recover My Files and it seemed to find the files (so I know something is still there) but there's something that makes me feel uneasy about the program. Uneasy enough to not want to shell out $70 for it.

Any tips in how I could remedy this would be appreciated.

I have had a ton of success with recovermyfiles. http://www.recovermyfiles.com/

You can download and install for free to see if it can recover your files (it gives you a preview), if it can you need to purchase it to actually recover anything.

Thanks. I did exactly that and saw that I did have files there. I don't know why the program just gave me a "fly by night" vibe. A good word from a fellow Neowinian goes a long way, though.

They only list FAT and NTFS versions. Am I missing something?

Ah, sorry I missed the "ex" part.

They have been around for a long time and have used their product for a few years. Last year I decided to purchase their product vs using a hacked copy because it gave better results than any of the full blown forensics softwares that I have used previously (including encase and ontrack easy recovery pro). You get 2 installs with the $80 purchase, you can always call to get them to release a install for another computer or two.

Ah, sorry I missed the "ex" part.

I know sometimes exFAT is known as FAT64 and I thought maybe it mith've been covered under their FAT "umbrella". :D Thanks for checking.

A question for you, sc302. I did the scan and it found various "folders". I have a "Lost File Results" folder, 3 "Virtual exFAT Partition" folders, 4 "Virtual FAT Partition" folders, 3 "Virtual HFS Partition" folders, and 1 "Virtual NTFS Partition" folder. If I select one of the exFAT partition folders it says I have ~300GB selected, which was about the size of data I had. I do have to deselect various "Lost files" that are about 1.6TB each (larger than the whole drive). My concern is that each of the exFAT folders have a different number of files found next to it. Should I just pick the one with the most?

RecoverMyFiles is brilliant. It's decent software, you can buy it from shops like Best Buy etc so it's not questionable or anythin.

Do not restore to itself. Unselect whatever is garbage

OK, just wanted to check that it's normal behavior. If I had a choice I would prefer it over-detects than miss some files. Thanks again.

I appreciate the feedback.

One more thing. It's in the process of saving the files. Is it normal that it has not saved any folder structure? It has put all the files in H:\Hard Disk 3\Virtual exFAT Partition @ 33038359\*.*

I'm glad it found the files, but did I miss something with the folder structure? Did I select something wrong?

That depends on if it had the folder structure to begin with.

OK, so there's a possibility that the folder structure was just lost and unrecoverable. It's not a setting somewhere that I'm missing, or perhaps in one of the other folders I had described above.
