threetonesun
Just ran the test and got 1.9 megabits/sec. Last year I got 1.7 on cable at my apartment, and the year before that we were getting waaaay less at our school. They must have improved the lines while I was gone. Frank
we could get t3 but the admins are so lazy Admins are like kids.....they always want the bigger better toy. I don't think it would be the admins being lazy; it is probably budget restraints....
rocks1985
T1. I plug an ethernet thing into my tablet pc. I don't know whether my college network is the speed of T1 or the speed of ethernet. Help.
Frank
T1. I plug an ethernet thing into my tablet pc. I don't know whether my college network is the speed of T1 or the speed of ethernet. Help. If you college Internet connection is a T1, then you are running on T-1 speeds. The speed of your connection also depends on how many users are accessing the T-1 at one given time. If you got 100,000 users accessing the T-1 at one time, then you probably are running on dial-up speeds.
ericnmu
We were about to get an oc3 and split it between michigan tech and northern michigan university, but they (michnet) went with 3 t3's (the third t3 goes to lake superior state). I would have loved an oc3
morganpugh84
kbps = kilobits per second KBps = kilobytes per second The difference is in the uppercase and lower case. That is why modems are advertised as a 56kbps modem not a 7KBps modem. 1KBps = 8kbps as there are 8 bits to a byte. 512kbps = 64KBps 1mbps = 128KBps very simple just device the kbps by 8 :)

als345
bandwidthplace.net is VERY inaccurate. The Broadbandreports.com is one of the best out there. Try this url http://chi.speakeasy.net
QuarterSwede
My machine doesn't play well with Java. The tests like to start but never end even when they say finished ... I get no results and my browser locks up. Gotta love it.

QuarterSwede
I am using Sun Java's (not that windows' version was any better ... they both suck.) and WinXP Pro. My roommate did the test and it worked for him. He is also using WinXP Pro and Sun Java. It gave him around 2540kbps download and 2517kbps upload. Frank
I had problems with Sun's version also.....it was a memory hog and didn?t work right half of the time. If it was me, I would make sure my IE was updated and uninstall sun and reinstall the MS version.

epple
think we got four fiber lines (big ones) going in to our school and each classroom with computers has 100mbit hubbed or switched.. and then we share this to another 20 or so schools via radio link or fibre... could easily get 4-5mb/s from a good source. kinda awesome. :woot:
matt74441
At my sisters university, they have a T1 line in each room, but with the huge amount of first year students, its just like dial-up. Damn Progressive Conservatives.
Iain
No idea what ours has, but it's the stupidest setup ever. There's two colleges, and the main server is at the college with about 50 computers, with our college (with the computing dept!) has to access is via infra-red link. If it rains or gets slightly cloudy, we're stuffed, and end up with no net. It's already happened once since I started back a week ago!

Imperfect63
hm.. that optonline bw test shows 4.5MBit, but it's probably higher. i usually pull about 1MB/s down and 600kb/s up. plus other ppl on network i'm guess the pipe is decent. maybe oc3? maybe its just a T3
