Country music legend Johnny Cash died early today of complications from diabetes at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, hospital spokeswoman Nicole Bates said. He was 71.

The world has lost a wonderfully raw and true musician.

Two things I'll always remember about Johnny Cash:

1. Years before gangsta rap and overt violence in music, Cash wrote what many people believe is the coldest line in music. In 'Folsom Prison Blues', Cash wrote about people oblivious to their freedom riding in a train, while prisoners at Folsom Prison hear the train passing by. In the song, the prisoner speaks about his life and what led him to prison and he says,

"I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die."

It's a line that still gives me shivers when I hear it.

2. My favorite story about him is some years ago when he won the album of the year in country, it came as a shock to some of the people in the industry because many stations wouldn't play any of the cuts from the album. So the day after he won the award he took out a full page add in the local newspaper in Nashville that said something to the effect of "To Country Radio, thanks for all your support" under a picture of him flipping them the middle finger.

Here is the Pic

I'll always miss Cash, you gotta love someone who has that much balls!

(Rodney Crowell)

I'm back on board that 49 Ford in, 1956

Long before the sun came up way out in the sticks

The headlights showed a two-rut road

Way back up in the pines

First time I heard Johnny Cash

'Sing I Walk the Line'

I got my thrill behind the wheel upon my daddies lap

Grandpa rode co-pilot with a flashlight and a map

Cane pole out the window

It was in the summer time

First time I heard Johnny Cash

Sing 'I Walk the Line'

(Johnny Cash)

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine

I keep my eyes wide open all the time

I keep the ends out for the tie that binds

Because you're mine

I walk the line

(Rodney Crowell)

All these long years later it's still music to my ears

I swear it sounds as good right now as anything I hear

I've seen the Mona Lisa

I've heard Shakespeare writ' real fine

Just like hearing Johnny Cash

Sing 'I Walk the Line'

(Johnny Cash)

As sure as night is dark and day is light

I keep you on my mind both day and night

And happiness that I've known proves that it's right

Because you're mine

I walk the line

Because you're mine

I walk the line

I ran out earlier today trying to find Johnny Cash's CD at HMV, too bad they said they didn't sell his CDs anymore since June (I am living in Hong Kong, so I think it's because few actually know him)...

Glad AOL just put the whole American IV CD online, listening right now... :) :( <-- what a complicated emotion I have now
