JohnSK
Hi guys.. I have a 128 kbit Wireless connection at home, I know it's nothing great but still.. well, the thing is, running the speed test on bandwidthplace.com gave me about 120 kbit/s, which is fine. BUT what's interesting is that by changing some registry settings (MTU,TTL,RWIN..) I've been able to get speed above 128 kbit, ~400 kbits to be exact. Now has anyone else with this type of connection noticed such dramatic speed increase? Is this normal? It's not only the speed test that got faster, d/ling files (random so they are not cached) went from 10-15 KB/s to around 45 KB/s! .. anyone could enlighten me as to how this is possible? Thanx.. johnny ps: I've rerun the test several times, sometimes I do get lower speeds (say about 150 kbits) but most of the time I get the above mentioned speed) ps2: Is this legal? I'm not hacking my ISP, I've just changed settings in my registry... but still I am running well above the 128kbits I should have
Frank
Changing your registry settings depending on the connection may speed it up a bit, because you are changing the way your computer handles the packets. It may just be a coincidence and the ISP may be tweaking some things to get your connection faster. ps2: Is this legal? I'm not hacking my ISP, I've just changed settings in my registry... but still I am running well above the 128kbits I should have As long as you do not change any of their hardware settings (any settings on the modem) and you just change settings on your PC, it is completely legal.
