The Windows XP Guest Account

Recommended Posts

ok, I have activated the guest account on my computer becuase I dont want people to be able to go onto my name. But the one thing is, is that it can't connect to go online unless my account is signed on and online. It shows the connection name under "Connect To" on the start menu, but when its clicked, it doesnt do anything. I am logged in as the administrator and i ont know wat to do????????

I know, its ridiculous. XP has too many limitations on the dumbest things. You can't even set the clock in the limited account. The only thing that I can think of is connecting to the Internet as a normal user, log out and then use the guest account. Thing is, when no one is logged on, your computer is wide open to the internet.

Huh?? Security of the machine connected to the internet - Has really NOTHING to do with that account that is logged in, yes is it possible that the logged in account may be limited to what code that is executed as that user can do.. But any use of a so called Guest account - or the giving a any rights for a GUEST account to do anything on your machine is ASKING for trouble.

If your plugged directly into the public net, without some form of firewall - be it a hardware router or atleast a minimum software firewall - you are asking for TROUBLE, and which account is logged in - is the least of your worries.

The guest account is disabled by default for a reason!! this account should NOT be turned on, unless you know exactly what your doing - when you do so. Especially on any machine that is connected to the public net.

it's not XP that does these things, it's NT. it's a secure OS. changing the time might sound like a trivial thing, but it can affect certain things in networks.
