mudslag
http://thestir.cafemom.com/pregnancy/121995/man_simulates_labor_to_see Oh, men, you make me laugh so hard sometimes. For it is only a member of your sex who would actually conduct an experiment to see who has a higher threshold for pain -- women or men -- by simulating labor contractions on yourself. Now why would you go and do that?A doctor in Australia hooked himself up to a bunch of electrodes that simulated the "same level of pain" brought on by childbirth (he had a mother of four test it before him to make sure it was painful enough -- yeah, I would volunteer for that). The highly scientific results of this single man who took part in this concluded that women have a higher pain tolerance. I believe his findings were reached by the amount of times he said, "Ow" and "That hurts." I didn't know we were in a competition, ladies, but ... yay, us? And, you know, not to split hairs here but as long as we're celebrating, let's not forget that he didn't have to go through the act of actually being pregnant, or, you know, giving birth. Even if you think this is ridiculous -- which, let's be honest, it is -- watch the video, because it is sure to bring but the smallest chuckle to you on this Monday afternoon. Perhaps I'm sadistic, but I couldn't help but smile as this doctor writhed in pain. I mean, if this "experiment" was really just a way for this guy to get a better idea of what his wife, sister, or mother went through, it would be sweet. But the fact that it was to see "who's tougher" just makes it kind of weird. Maybe that's why I laughed? I mean, could you picture a woman taking part in some sort of test to see if she could tolerate something men do? I can't. And not because women are scaredy cats, because they're not dumb. The other thing about this little project that bugs me a bit is obviously we all knew the outcome. I mean, you can tell this man is in serious pain -- and everybody knows labor isn't exactly a walk in the park -- but could you imagine if he finished and was like, "Big deal. Dudes are totally tougher"? He would be the most hated man ever! I don't know, guys. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but something about this video rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's the fact that the video is actually titled, "A Man Experiencing Childbirth."
Anooxy
So pain tolerance is measured with how long till you give up? Women don't have the choice, they have to go through it. This test is BS. He should've gone till the end. Also isn't it true that women perceive a lot more pain than men for same tests? What is the purpose of this? Men are built to feel less pain... Anooxy
Also wanted to add that women's estrogen acts as a painkiller (and it reduces the pain a lot actually). They still do get pain drugs during labor.
Solid Knight
Paint tolerance varies wildly from person to person. I don't even think sex is a factor. Also, just because you experience something painful doesn't mean you have a high pain tolerance.
DocM
Precisely. Me being a good example. It comes down to being able to compartmentalize the pain, allowing it to be ignored. One incident in particular was having foot surgery under local anesthesia. They missed a nerve with the xylocaine then, predictably, hit that exact spot with an electrosurgery blade (Bovie) - a "knife" that cuts with electricity. Didn't scream or move, just shut it out and told the doc he needed to inject more xylocaine. Handy.
azure.sapphire
Big deal. I obviously don't have any knowledge of labor, but I somehow doubt being able to withstand contractions is even half of the equation. Speaking of other kinds of pain, I give this gone one week of cluster headaches before he is on the ground begging for a god/deity to take his life. Azusa
best way to simulate labor is to cut out fiber and lower your water intake.

+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted June 21, 2011 Subscriber² Share Posted June 21, 2011 they should make guys who rape women go through this x 9001 What an oddly off-topic thing to come out with, and pretty self-righteous too. Thankfully we live in a society that does not torture prisoners. On topic: I find the virtiolic rant from the female reporter/journalist hilarious. I had something similar but instead of a blade like that they were removing a nail that had gone badly wrong. The Doctor however refused to believe I could actually feel pain and continued anyway. He was an ass
articuno1au
I have about 3 objections to this on a scientific basis. 1. Women have preparation coming in, like stretching/working the muscles in question. Training in what to expect which will adjust your endurance on that basis. 2. The muscles in play are COMPLETELY different. Men's abs aren't the same; they don't have the flexibility and endurance that women's muscles possess. 3. Women have massive levels of hormone and endorphin in their system which dramatically lower the pain felt. Last but not least, women have the connection with their child which helps hold them over during birth >.< Not trying to detract from women at all, I doubt I could handle it :p My sexuality would be all kinds of troubled :\ This is not a serious test >.>

I smashed my face in, fracturing the bone into 4 and ripping my lip about 2 inches open. It was being sticked up, but obviously they measure how much local anasthetic to give... The guy doing it wasn't happy and said he could stitch it better, so undid it and started again. Painkiller wore off as he was undoing it. So yeah it hurt but I sorta just put that in a box and focussed elsewhere.
articuno1au
I had my wisdom teeth out under local anesthetic O.o I know a lot of people do, but a lot don't as well.. I just sucked it up and blanked it out. It's amazing how much porn your mind stores when you need to avoid thinking about something :p

articuno1au
It does seem a little bit that way, but I think it's a rant against the people ranting against women, who unfortunately are perceived to be men :p And no I did not. Thanks for the mental imagery though :p
