CCleaner can be dangerous

Question

I realize after 4 years or so of using it that CCleaners reg clean module can be dangerous, But I thought the program was smart enough to know a live shortcut from a dead one. Somehow, I think my wife, checked the cleaning box titled start menu shortcuts and CCleaner deleted about 50% of my good shortcuts. There didn't seem to be a way to undo the clean as there is in the reg clean module if you do a backup so I had to go and reinstall or repair about 7 different programs. Just saying be careful it is a very powerful program.

Thanks all!

btw, budman, my system is still running like a charm!

Used CCleaner for a few years now, onmore than 1 PC and never had a problem with either the file deletion or registry cleaner.

I always use the backup option before cleaning, just in case, but never had to restore from a backup.

The program is not the problem. It is the user who should know a thing or two about what to delete and what not to delete.

CCleaner itself is fine, the registry cleaners of any app can be dangerous. Registry is an archaic method of data storage when space was scarce IMO. And should go back to nice portable ini files with software.

Actually,, the registry wasn't created for space issues. and the registry is a faster, and more effective way of writing system wide settings. if anything ini files are the archaic ones. or are you saying databases are archaic and the web should revert to file based forums ;)

I think you're talking about things you don't really know anything about here :) and this wasn't even the registry cleaner, but actual shortcuts.

If it deleted working shortcuts I think either the user did something wrong or something was already screwed up with the OS.

How. if you tell it to delete inactive shortcuts it's a straight forward operation and nothing that can be screwed up by the user or the OS. it's the App that loops through the shortcuts, checks where they're linked to and if it can't find the file it links to, deletes it.

if this failed it's somethign with the software. not the user or OS. deleting dead shortcuts like this is silly anyway, since apps will make one or more folders for this shortcuts, so unless it also goes through and deletes empty folders it'll leave a bunch of empty folders, and even if it does that a lot of apps for some reason leaves info files in the actual start menu, that won't be cleaned out. and thus you'll still be left with a start menu folder with some help file or a website link (which won't be removed as dead anyway). making the whole thing utterly pointless and leaving more of a mess than you had before you ran it.

Mistake #1 - letting your wife use your computer. That's why I bought mine a Macbook.

I've been using CCleaner for several years and the only problem I've experienced was of my own making, I'm cautious and check the settings before I run it.

It would seem that an incorrect setting may have been selected.

This is the option that was checked. All this is supposed to do is delete broken shortcuts in the Start Menu, nothing else. It's nothing to do with the registry cleaner, and the user is not at fault. Either CCleaner has a bug, or the shortcuts were corrupt somehow which caused them to be deleted.
