Full or widescreen DVDs?

Recommended Posts

to the Faid... you notice how much of the sides are gone tho? I'm trying to find those starwars comparison... they did a bad job there on the widescreen. Almost all movies are filmed widescreen so all the information that's no in widescreen doesn't exist. Since it was blacked out by the camera.. it wasn't captured. So to make fullscreen they basically stretch the center of the image which means the left and right edges get cut off..

found em!!

in the full screen you can't even see who they are fighting till they get within the frame...

you don't even see the other person then...

Blockbuster movies such as LOTR and Star Wars are different cases of course... where lots of time and effort has gone into making special effects for widescreen.

As I was saying earlier,

-Widescreen also cuts out part of the image

-These cut pieces don't detract from the story... the main reason to watch any film.

Also, those images from StarWars.com were specifically chosen to encourage the purchase of the Widescreen edition. I can pick several shots from Episode 2 where seeing it widescreen is inconsequential.

EDIT: This thread is pretty ****ty IMO, so imagine my surprise when it became an "Important Topic"

Not necessarily an important topic but when i searched to find the starwars examples i found like 30 other threads asking this same questions so it's pinned in order to prevent this.... Continuing the thread is better that keep asking the samething over and over again... after a while tho... it'll be removed when it's dead thread i guess.

pick away because as far as i know the movie is filmed in widescreen format so how is the full screen gonna be more if the full screen is a cutout of the original filming (widescreen) don't think they used 2 different cameras (lenses) for that. This isn't just "Blockbuster movies" as you put it... look around more and you'll see....

OK, granted if you have a tiny 13" - 19" TV that is 4:3 aspect ratio then hell yeah it's kinda a pain in da butt to watch that... what you should compare (go to a electronics place like Circuit City) is the movie on a 16:9 tv playing in 16:9 mode with a 4:3 in 4:3 mode. You'll definitely be enlightened. I just love checking out stuff like that at the stores so they know me... LOL I had them do that same test with the boss's persmission (since he basically knows me too) We hooked up 2 same dvd players, same brand TV using same cables and all that cuz there was a big debate started with customers and employees :D So closing hrs one sunday we did it and there.... it settled the debate.

Yea, for some reason I have Goldmember in fullscreen. Its my only fullscreen DVD, and when Beyonce is translating the things and it shows the captions with the words, some of the words even get cut off which just looks god awful. Widescreen is awesome.

However, I think Band of Brothers is fullscreen, but I believe thats how it was shot since it was on HBO.. correct me if Im wrong.

I'm all about widescreen. I don't like loosing part of the image of the movie.

A good way to reference it would be with 5.1 sound. If you didn't have a sub hooked up, would you want all the bass that would usually go to it to just be left out, or would you want it to be played through all your other speakers?

I watch all my DVDs on a 16' TV, and I still would never buy a fullscreen DVD. I do have a friends with a 40' TV that buys all fullscreen though... the freak.

I used to be fullscreen until I realized what the difference was.

Widescreen all the way. I want to see the whole screen. No chopping my picture.

All i can say is that the dramatic shot at the end of count of monte cristo is completly messed because of fullscreen, the words are completely cut off its terrible. Also when drath maul activates his lightsabre at the beginning of the dual in EP I is worth it
