Network + DSL "Thing"

Recommended Posts

Okay... I'll explain the setup we have first...

There's my computer... It's hooked up to a Linksys Wireless Access Point/Router, which is hooked up to a DSL modem, which is hooked up to the wall... There are 3 other computers that all connect to the DSL wirelessly through the access point.

Up until now, everything has worked fine, but this started happening a while ago.

Let me first say - if I get rid of the router, and just plug the dsl modem directly into my computer, everything works completely fine, but as soon as I put the router back into the picture this happens again. It starts out with everything working - everyone can connect to the internet, but after a little while, it suddenly stops working, but not completely... I can't go to websites or anything, but I can still connect to AIM, MSN, IRC and to a certain extent e-mule, but these programs have a whole bunch of lag... This leads me to believe that it's not stopping, just slowing down a whole ****-load.

I guess there's not really much else to say that I can think of... Thanks in advance if you can figure out what's happening... ;)

The wireless router might be going kinda slow, Maybe something in your house is interfeering with the ghz of the router. OR you have the router setup so it turns off after not being active or soemthing like that i have seen in the past.

Emule has a FAQ which clearly states that the software can and will bottleneck most routers if you mess with the settings of the emule client. Even if you don't mess with the settings the amount of connections that emule opens is enough to bring most routers to their knees...

Try lowering the # of connections per ratio whatever setting... Try 20 then 10 then 5 and see what happens.

Or

As the previous user stated, linksys routers do have some settings that will allow it to sever the connection or keep it open indefinately... make sure you've configured this properly.

Wait... You're saying that even if I don't have e-mule open at the time that I'm trying to use the router, it can still mess it up if I changed the setting previously?

Users who repoertedly used Emule found that the software would open too many connections too fast and would cause their router to stop responding. Most users claim the only way to get the router responding properly was to turn off emule and reset the router.

This is only a possibility since you say you had emule running... I suggest turning emule off, resetting the router, then test the router a few days WITHOUT running emule. If the problem doesn't occur, try setting the connections in the emule software to a lower setting
